Noble Firs Residency at the Firkin Tavern

Posted on:

Noble Firs play a laid back variation of the indie-rock genre that’s as likely to induce swaying bodies as it is headbanging enthusiasts. Their latest release, Moss Mouth, is a three track showcase of bright guitar tones, kinetic drumming and animated vocals that move between breezy verses and moments of turbulence that seem to be designed to move an audience. If you’d like to be part of that moving audience this is a good month for you. The Noble Firs have taken up a residency at the Firkin Tavern (making it the Noble Firkin Tavern?) and will be performing there for the next two Saturdays, ending in their record release show on November 30th. Catch them this Saturday night with Autonomics and Ghost Frog. – Benjamin Toledo

Banned Books Organize Chaos at JB’s Nov. 21

Posted on:
Matthew Dermond and Zane Kanevsky comprise the super-duo (previously power trio) Banned Books, who are serving as the opening act tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. Banned Books hits in an unconventional manner, coming at you from a point or angle that is unexpected/surprising and you may even need to take a moment to react to, but once the momentary adjustment is made, the appreciation begins. There is a distinct noise-groove oriented sound punctuated with percussion and a menacing electronic/guitar presence that creates a jammed-packed sense of organized chaos. Embrace the strange and quickly the sonic jigsaw puzzle gains meaning. A pair of Brooklyn-oriented artists will follow them. The groove-generating psych-pop Zula will be followed by the exploratory experimentations of former Deli NYC print cover boys Celestial Shore, fresh off the release of their debut LP 10x via Hometapes. The sugarcoated Andy Moholt-fronted psych extravaganza of Laser Background closes out an evening dedicated to exploring the possibilities. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Even though it’s a bit cold out, all this sunshine has us in a positive mood. Well, that and the debut music video for the track "Hiding Records" from Teen Men, a new psych-pop project featuring the Spinto Band‘s Nick Krill and Joe Hobson, who collaborated on the tripped-out video with photographer Catharine Maloney and filmmaker Albert Birney. Empress Of releases new track, plays Glasslands on 11.25

Posted on:

We kinda missed this new single by Empress Of – deservingly the most buzzed about new dream pop band from Brooklyn. Led by 23 year old artist Lorely Rodriguez, the band – highlighted in our Best of NYC Emerging Artists of 2012 Poll – had a great 2013 that led to sign with Terrible Records (run by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor) and to a series of important shows, including a few dates in Europe (one for a Pitchfork curated show in Paris). You can see Empress Of live at Glasslands on November 25.

Mt. Royal’s Video “Missing Reward”

Posted on:

With their s/t EP release due out Jan. 28 2014, Baltimore indie-poppers Mt. Royal (comprised of members from Big in Japan, and the Celebration,) have unveiled a teaser of a video which makes us crave more more more. Singer Katrina Ford was made the focal point of the video, styled after how videos used to be way back when, and truly sets the mood like the shimmery disco ball in the background. Check it out, and expect tons more in the coming year.

Adventure Galley Record Release at Holocene 11.20

Posted on:

Adventure Galley is coming to you with a brand new LP, Anywhere That’s Wild, and it is well worth the wait. It is primarily based with synthesized riffs backed by solid drum rhythms that won’t leave any doubt about their ability to rock. Similarly to the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party they flirt in and out of the boundaries of pop and indie rock through demanding vocals and danceable beat patterns but bring you back to ground with engaging progression and raw execution. Anywhere That’s Wild is the band’s first LP and is being released off of the Portland label (and arts collective) Internet Piracy Records. This album is one of the most complete to come out of this city in 2013. There is a clear amount of effort to make such a clear sound come across on record and the production value is on par with any major label you will find in a similar category. It’s not easy to cross the synthpop/rock lines that Adventure Galley has done, but this album shows that they belonged on the same stage as Of Montreal earlier this month. The album release party is tonight at Holocene with Minden, Exotic Club, and Lassi. – Colin Hudson

Spires unveil video for “Candy Flip” + play Union Pool on 11.26

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s Spires was one of the "buzz bands" at this past edition of the CMJ Music Marathon – we were really sorry they had to cancel at the last minute our show at Pianos on CMJ Friday. The daydream pop* quartet, whose sound is reminiscent of an intriguing combination of The Cure and early Doves – just released the video for their single "Candy Flip" – check it out below. See them live at Union Pool on November 26 with Temples

* "Daydream" rather than dream pop, since they sing: "Sleep, that’s an option I don’t need…"
