FYI on DIYs in PHL: DIY PHL

Posted on:
It was Halloween night. I found myself at the front of the room in the middle of a group of 10 or so energetic punks fist-pumping the air and shouting lyrics along with Grace Ambrose, who was masquerading as singer Colin McFaull of the punk band Cock Sparrer for the evening. I was in the dark, packed basement of a collective house in West Philly called The Mitten, which I had never been to before. Having recently moved back to the Philadelphia area from Boston, I knew practically no one at the show. By all accounts, I shouldn’t have known about the show at all – but thanks to DIY PHL, a print and online calendar that lists independent music and art events in and around the city, I found out about it. That night, five ad hoc bands performed as Rudimentary Peni, Rob Zombie/White Zombie, The Lemonheads, Avail, Cock Sparrer and Kiss for more than a hundred twenty- and thirty-somethings, some of which were in full costume, face paint and stage personality, meanwhile raising $1300 for the Philadelphia Student Union.

DIY PHL is the burgeoning passion project of friends Ramsey Beyer, 28; Mikey Cantor, 27; and Ambrose, 24. On Saturday, November 9 at 7pm at PhilaMOCA, DIY PHL will present First Time’s The Charm, a show inspired by Not Enough Fest in Portland, Oregon that will feature 17 new bands performing for the first time. Their aim is to break down barriers to participation in the DIY community, encouraging people from underrepresented groups and musicians playing instruments for the first time to make bands and get involved. Proceeds from FTTC will be used to purchase a PA and create an open-access, member-based PA Share program. In addition, Black Orchid will be selling vegetarian and vegan dishes at the event. I recently caught up with the DIY PHL crew at Ambrose’s house in West Philly. We talked about how DIY PHL came to be and how it’s changed over time, why DIY’s thriving in Philly right now, what distinguishes Philly from other cities, the story behind FTTC, and much more HERE.

SWF returns to Boston for hometown album release show, 11/29 @ Midway Cafe

Posted on:

Boston native SWF (aka Stevie Weinstein-Foner) will be returning to us for a hometown album release show on the 29th of Nov at Midway Cafe.

If this name doesn’t register with you, you need to grab your headphones stat and dive right in to his debut LP ‘Let It Be Told’. Weinstein-Foners unique voice leads the LP with a cavernous, loose quality similar to Kurt Vile’s on Smoke Ring For My Halo (listen to Ghost Town and you’ll know what I’m saying). ‘Let It Be Told’ is underproduced to perfection, it has a live quality that’s raw and mysterious. It’s a melting pot of soul, blues and dirty rock ‘n’ roll, coated with loads of distortion and reverb.

“Let It Be Told," the title track from the album, is available as a free download via Soundcloud. Do yourself a favor and get it while you can and be sure to come out and support on 11/29.

Residuels Opening for Black Lips at FUC Nov. 7

Posted on:

There’s so much going on tonight – Philly RULES!!! However, nothing is going to get as debaucherous as what’s going down at the Church tonight. Hometown fuzz-garage rockers Residuels will be bringing the big beats and even bigger power chords filling the basement. They’ll be opening for indie-rock faves Black Lips. There will definitely be a raucous denim-clad crowd on hand. Also sandwiched between the two is Cincinnati garage-pop trio Tweens. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 8:30, $18, All Ages – Alexis V.

Tei Shi premieres ‘Nevermind the End’ from ‘Saudade’ EP, out next week

Posted on:

Tei Shi just released her second single ‘Nevermind the End,’ and I’m completely hooked. The song takes off from a dream pop canvas of layered harmonies and synth-backed drones, but then brings an R&B sultriness to the party to expand the genre guest list. Moving through rounds of time-stretched groove, with the inviting hook of ‘maybe we can take a ride tonight… ‘, you’ll be nervous about where she might want to take you, but more than willing to do as she says. It’s an unexpected follow-up from a singer who only just began taking off after some great performances at this year’s CMJ fest. Check it out below and see her for the release of new EP ‘Saudade’ on Dec 4 at Mercury Lounge. Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Fine Pets Tape Release at Habesha Lounge 11.8

Posted on:

Fine Pets cultivate different influences in such a way that it’s impossible to pin them into one specific genre. They take the raw energy you’d expect from a garage rock act, cut it with a some early shoegaze leads, a DIY punk attitude and output it through lo-fi recordings give the music an air of nostalgia. Their latest release, NO GAZE, is a collection of fuzzed-out tracks that range from calm creatures to destructive animals trying to break free from the cassette tape that holds them captive. Fine Pets will be setting these tracks lose at Habesha this Friday night, be there to celebrate their release. – Benjamin Toledo

Turning Violet Violet Farewell Show at The Boot & Saddle Nov. 7

Posted on:
What is it about the process of making an album that leads to bands to breaking up? Some give it that one last push to see how it goes, but sometimes even the accolades are not enough. Another growing trend that I’ve seen lately is the release and farewell show all in one evening. Well, it seems like the former might be happening with Turning Violet Violet, or it could simply be what I like to call “band growing pains.” Whatever it is. After four years together, the band began to get some traction with last year’s release Double Cure, riding on the strength of the track “Cold Bread”; however, the group recently shared a new single “Cherry Blossom” with the message: “Our final single. Come get it.” Tonight, the band will be playing their “last headlining show for the forseeable future” at The Boot & Saddle with The Weaks, a new project from former Dangerous Ponies Evan Bernard and Chris Baglivo, and The Dollys (ex-Green Paper). If it’s any consolation, Turning Violet Violet promise that you’ll find their members popping up on other projects, but for now, this will be all for the group. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

NYC electro poppers Twintapes plays the Rock Shop on 11.14

Posted on:

There is an intriguingly vintage quality to the synth driven sound of Brooklyn’s Twintapes, a NYC electro pop trio brainchild of Pavel Rarera (pictured) that – without any support from the major music blogs – has recently gone viral on Youtube with a few videos. Triggering devices that reference electronic pioneers Kraftwerk all the way up to current trendsetters The Knife, the duo finds a perfect balance between groove and chill. Their vocals are delivered with a more soulful approach however, positioning their sound closer to dance than the harsher textures of industrial. Augmenting the band’s live impact is a percussionist who incorporates traditional drum set pieces like snare drum and hi hat cymbals alongside electronic beats, giving the band a welcome element of humanity in the rhythm section. The next opportunity to catch their live show is November 14 at The Rock Shop. – Dave Cromwell

NYC metal worth the hearing loss: Sannhet

Posted on:

While traversing the musical landscape, one is virtually assaulted with pre-packaged material, structured compositions and no room to breath let alone evolve. Enter Sannhet, a 3-piece tour de force of universally inspiring sounds that paint darkened scenery amidst their omnipresent spirit. Based out of Brooklyn, the trio evokes a mysterious madness with a very heavy metal attitude that’s far more empowering than imposing. ‘Known Flood’ – released in February 2013 – unleashes the listener into a vast space of orchestrated heaviness. A great kick off for what we hope becomes an evolving soundscape worthy of future visits and subsequent returns. Sannhet is currently working on a follow up EP to be released later this year. Earlier in 2013 the owners of Brooklyn’s St. Vitus signed Sannhet to their record label Sacrament Music. – Joey Fish
