Nominated Artist Of The Month – Tensor Announces Return To Western Mass
Splitting time between Massachusetts’ Boston and Pioneer Valley music scenes, Tensor has made a name for itself statewide.
Released last Christmas, the four-piece skate punk band’s latest album, NAD, is a short but gripping listen. “Emaciated” is the only of its eight tracks to reach the two-minute mark, but its terse tracks often work to its advantage. For example, “Fester Faster,” which sounds like a 90s grunge anthem on speed, gets its point across in just over a minute.
Tensor will return to Western Mass with shows at the Palmer Historical and Cultural Center on November 16 and Chameleons Nightclub in Pittsfield on November 23.
DIY PHL’s First Time’s The Charm at PhilaMOCA Nov. 9
I just wanted to remind you about DIY PHL‘s First Time’s The Charm at PhilaMOCA tonight. Inspired by Not Enough Fest in Portland, Oregon, it is an event that attempts "to break down barriers to participation in the DIY community." You’ll find brand new bands performing music from various genres for the first time in what is meant to be a supportive and nurturing environment. The proceeds from this evening’s event will go towards funding a member-based PA Share program with membership being open to all, which is an absolutely rad idea. You can find out more about DIY PHL and FTTC from our recent interview with their organizers HERE. Your support would be greatly appreciated! PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7pm, All Ages – Alexis V.

Artist to Watch: Sanglorians
Wouldn’t you say that most of what falls under the indie-rock tag can occasionally feel too serious, as if great art can only be accomplished by writing brooding poetry and exhaustive introspection? Sometimes, a great song can communicate a bevy of emotions by hitting the gut instead of the head. And Echo Park sextet Sanglorians achieve this by invoking high-energy melodies and sweetly muscular guitars that rush in like a skydiver plunging headfirst into a vertical dive. The incredibly infectious band decree big moments with ascending notes and blistering fret work, gushing with celebratory harmonies that vibrate with life. One may misconstrue these descriptions as silly or witless, but the plain truth about their debut effort, Initiation, is that its uptempo anthems are aesthetically unified and smartly arranged. This is power pop or the highest order with a bit of an orchestral slant, peppered with a bit of glam metal excess, as if Marshall Crenshaw and the Young Brothers collaborated together to reimagine an Electric Light Orchestra record. It surprisingly works, and its technical riffs and major-key dynamics are merely small elements that contribute to an all-encapsulating experience that is pulsating with life-affirming zeal. – Juan Rodríguez
Weekly Feature: Rathborne tours with Albert Hammond Jr.
There’s a strong influence from the golden eras of guitar rock on most of Rathborne‘s songs, with a constant wall of sound and driving pace a la The Ramones or early Tom Petty. But lead singer’s Luke Rathborne’s pared-down lyrics and vocals, which sometimes reach toward his interests in Elliott Smith and Bob Dylan, are at turns sensual, wistful or sweet enough to support the title of the new album – ‘SOFT’.

Weekly Feature: Emmy Wildwood unveils new video
Emmy Wildwood wears many hats. We mean this both figuratively and somewhat literally: the indie musician is multitalented, and keeping well accessorized happens to be one of them. Wildwood made Time Out New York’s 2013 Best Dressed list and is the owner of Tiger Blanket Records, a Brooklyn-based vintage store AND record label. Through these projects, she’s become a Williamsburg community pillar of sorts — Tiger Blanket is more than a label, it’s a place for local artists to collaborate and create. Emmy Wildwood’s debut album is slated to drop this fall, and she just released her second video for single "Luxurious Problems" – streaming below.
