Empty Chairs releases “Caveat Emptor” on Friday 11.01

Posted on:

If you think about it, dream music shouldn’t really be "pop". That genre’s structure is too organized and predictable to be associated with dreaming, which takes our brain for a ride through anomalous associations, buried memories and curious twists and turns. Also, pop songs are intrinsically "built" to be remembered – while most dreams are forgotten. This is why jazz feels like the more appropriate genre to match the essence of dreams, and some bands actually did try something that – Dif Juz anybody?

Brooklyn Empty Chairs don’t really play "Dream Jazz," but their approach to songwriting is not as straight nor as upbeat as required by the "pop" format. Reflective, suspended and impressionistic, the band’s songs flow like a stream of unconscious thoughts, full of gentle but still disorienting unpredictability, immersed in an atmosphere that conjures up another important quality of dreams: depth of meaning – or at least the perception of it.

Empty Chairs will celebrate the release of their debut album "Caveat Emptor" at Pianos on Friday November 1st.

Soft Shadows Record Release at Bunk Bar 10.29

Posted on:

If you’re new to the Portland shoegaze scene allow me to introduce you to a band that’s quickly moving to it’s forefront, Soft Shadows. This dreamy trio balances quiet vocal melodies with electronic drumbeats and reverberating guitar tones that, at times, roar into a spaced-out screams that can be heard in lo-fi clarity on their aptly-named new release, Reverb is for Lovers. The full length album captures a moving tone through it’s minimal arrangement and complex array of tonal soundscapes, yet still retains a pop element that can make an entranced listener lift their head and break into an energetic dance. Soft Shadows will be celebrating the release of Reverb is for Lovers tonight at Bunk Bar with Appendixes and Wishyunu, you can also stream Reverb is for Lovers in its entirety on their bandcamp page. – Benjamin Toledo

Motive releases new single “Mammals” + announces debut

Posted on:

NYC quartet Motive is one of those bands that rocks with nonchalance, which is a quality Lou Reed (and David Bowie) mastered to perfection. Their new single ‘Mammals’ (streaming below) also features a climbing melody that’s at once elegant and catchy. The band has a self-title debut album scheduled for early 2014.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best NYC songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Closing things out this evening is gothic post-punk trio Psychic Teens, who should be the perfect act to get you in the mood for all the upcoming Halloween festivities. Also, don’t forget to stick around after their performance for some campy B-movie horror flick goodness. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $5, All Ages – Alexis V.

Gang of Youths “A Sudden Light”

Posted on:

Gang of Youths has already written themselves off as a**holes, by the looks of the biting reviews they’ve posted (as in “Wanna see someone with zero charisma get up on stage and pretend to be Jim Morrison for half an hour-?” ) But it takes a special bastard of jerk to flaunt their own bad press; the kind that generates must-see CMJ buzz. If Arcade Fire were a little more bromantic, they would be Gang of Youths. They’ve recently made the leap from Australia to Music City, and hopefully more hijinks on the level of “A Sudden Light” will ensue. Listen and decide for yourself if any more attention is warranted. –Terra James-Jura

The Deli LA Presents: Haunted Summer at The Echo Tonight

Posted on:

Mystical duo Haunted Summer have been enchanting audiences each monday during this spook-filled month of October for their residency at The Echo. This coming Monday, to close out the whole shebang, The Deli LA will be presenting the night. Their residency is centered around the release of their EP, ‘Something in The Water.’ Playing songs off the EP as well as new tunes written during their recent honeymoon in Paris, John Seasons and Bridgette Eliza Moody, will be backed by a full band. Last week, they debuted the live version of a former B-side, “Ain’t One,” which is streaming below. It was a showstopper, featuring Moody’s light-as-air vocals soaring above the band’s signature psyched-out sound design experimentation. The line-up for the final week is stellar, featuring a Deli Mag favorite, Touché, who we reviewed earlier this year, alongside recent singees to Innovative Leisure whose music has mysteriously evaporated from the interweb, De Lux, as well as densely, spaced-out newcomers, Historian. It’s sure to be one of those epic, celebratory evenings made for re-telling. Head to The Echo’s site for more info and set times. – Jacqueline Caruso
