NYC Hip Hop: Mike Larry Draw unveils video for “Get Lite”

Posted on:

Mike Larry Draw directed the video for his new single, “Get Lite.” He boldly opted to step out of the focus and even cast a “young lady” to perform his raps for him as the star. Taken from his newest album, "Profound New Law," it is an upbeat dance jam that showcases his adept delivery and raspy rap style. Imagine Canibus on a younger more idealistic tip; a man with a message yet still unadulterated by labels and management. The album even has a counterpart album called “Profound New Law Commentary,” which showcases several full songs and otherwise provides a preview / commentary on his process and inspirations. He’s a funny guy, an impressive producer, graphic designer, and director. Mike Larry Draw deserves your attention. – BrokeMc

New Track: “Nietzche’s Harvest Song” – The Weaks

Posted on:

Below is the official debut track from The Weaks called "Nietzche’s Harvest Song." The project is the brainchild of former Dangerous Ponies Evan Bernard and Chris Baglivo. You’ll find a plethora of artists that live, play and work at Big Mamma’s Warehouse on the single like ex-bandmate Kyle Pulley, Algernon Cadwallader‘s Peter Helmis and Joe Reinhardt, Bandname‘s Cat Park and Greg Labold, Hop Along‘s Tyler Long, Mike Bell and many others. We are sure that will be a common occurence throughout their upcoming debut EP The World Is A Terrible Place & I Hate Myself and Want To Die. Ha…we’re guessing that you can tell there’s a touch of emo on the album and judging by this track and the fact that Bernard and Baglivo are ex-Ponies, there will be plenty of power-pop. What began as an ambitious project to write and a record a song a week has also morphed into a full live band for the duo, backed by more ex-Ponies Mikey Tashjian and Andy Black (ex-Nicos Gun). They will be making their first appearance on November 7 with old friends Turning Violet Violet and Dollys (ex-Green Paper).

The Communion Club Nights Tour w/Birdie Busch & Prowler at JB’s Oct. 3

Posted on:
The Communion Club Nights Tour rolls into Johnny Brenda’s tonight. While the tour brings a trio of artists, Willy Mason, Roadkill Ghost Choir and Rubblebucket, it extends a friendly hand including local performers at each stop (in this case) Birdie Busch and Prowler. The show begins with Birdie Busch whose recipe for sound incorporates fundamental ingredients – memorable refined lyricism projected through vocals which embody a steady anchoring presence, all while the folk-oriented instrumentation works to encapsulate a peaceful yet ever-moving feel. Willy Mason uses a spoken-singing style that serves to authentically mold to his words lifting the emotions to the surface while echoing traditional folk. Six-piece Florida natives Roadkill Ghost choir are a hybrid of alt-country and indie rock. Then the tone distinctly changes as Prowler brings their customized danceable spaced-out electro-funk. The couple of Kalmia Traver and Alex Toth lead the group of eclectic, morphing horn-laced synth dance-pop of Rubblebucket ,who just released Save Charlie, wrap up this interesting and talent-littered night meshing sophisticated layered grooves and rhythms with succinct vocals. Johnny Brenda’s 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 7:30pm, $15, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Katie Costello moves to NYC, plays CBGB Fest on 10.10

Posted on:

Returning for a second year in the city where it all began, the CBGB festival expects to feature approximately 500 bands and solo acts appearing from Oct. 9 through 13 at a myriad of bars, nightclubs and other spaces throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. Along with legendary acts and artists long associated with the iconic brand, a number of emerging artist are scheduled to perform as well.

One such performer is the charmingly quirky Katie Costello, who recently relocated from LA to NYC, scheduled to take the stage at The Living Room on Oct. 10th. Her recent appearance at Cameo Gallery in support of rising UK songstress Lucy Rose had everyone in attendance marveling at Katie’s combination of wit and musical ability. Despite her sarcasm laced banter, Katie is a serious musician whose songs have been featured on CW shows “90210,” “One Tree Hill,” and ABC’s “Private Practice.” Her impressive vocal range and sensitivity on immediately appealing cuts like “I Will Surrender” (streaming) can’t help but win her new fans. The CBGB festival also includes film events as well as panel discussion and music-industry conferences, sharing similarities with Austin’s SXSW and the CMJ festival right here in NY (with which will quite amazingly overlap on 10.13). A full schedule can be found on the festival’s website including information on how to obtain badges to the shows. – Dave Cromwell

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Sol Cat Album Release Party at Mercy Lounge 10.3

Posted on:

Sol Cat has received plenty of love from Deli readers, expressed most recently in being voted Artist of the Month. The group has built a following by pulling the uninitiated into their orbit of hazy, languid trip-rock. It’s hard to resist a group that could have been Jareth’s house band in Labyrinth. This Thursday is the launch party for their EP “Welcome to Cowabunga.” Fans can head down to the Mercy Lounge to congratulate the goblin kings on the release and their epic showers. -Terra James-Jura

Petejota’s Final Release

Posted on:

San Francisco based, underground garage rock music project, Petejota is coming to an end. This short lived but mighty musical facet was created solely from the mind and artistic fervor of Hernando Buitrago. Buitrago is also a member of the more contemporary experimental indie band, Magic Fight who has been winning attention around the Bay Area in their own right.

With all that said Petejota has left us with a final piece of music entitled, Burnouts/LetsTakeItSlowThen Single via sound cloud. Make sure you give it a listen and wish Buitrago the best on future projects, and his work with Magic Fight. –Jordannah Elizabeth

You’ll be able to see them live at The Deli’s CMJ Indie Stage at Pianos on Friday 10.18 (final schedule to be announced soon), and while waiting check out this new video they just released for droney single "IE."

Richmond’s Ki:Theory Premiere Music Video on Nylon

Posted on:

(photo by Chris LaCroix) Today, Richmond’s Ki:Theory (Joel Burleson’s solo project) premiered his animated music video for "Kitty Hawk" on Nylon. If his upcoming release Kitty Hawk (out Oct. 29) is anything like this psychedelic electronic journey of a track, we can definitely expect him to be headlining every outrageously awesome sweat fest around the world. Oh yes, this is good, so very very good.
