The Deli’s CMJ Music Marathon Runner #1: Jack

Posted on:

Hey everyone, I’m Jack. I’m a liberal arts undergrad living in the Bronx right now. Like the cliche, I listen to just about every genre depending on what mood I am, if I’m alone or with friends, if I’m under the influence, etc. Since I am a college student, I’d say the genre that I listen to the most is, for a lack of a better term, "college rock," stuff like Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., or newer stuff like Mac DeMarco. But as I said before, I’m always up for hearing new/different music.

Please submit your band for CMJ coverage consideration through the comment section below, looking forward to listening to your music!

I’ll be accepting submission for the following genres only:

Indie Pop
Punk Rock
Psych Rock
Hip Hop + Funk + Other
Singer Songwriters

The Deli’s CMJ Music Marathon Runner #2: Kayla

Posted on:

I’m Kayla Hay and I’m a Creative Writing student pursuing music journalism. My passion for music is something I take very seriously, I have my own music review blog dedicated to bringing my readers insight to the music I listen to, as well as reviews on more popular artists on the charts. I started working for the Los Angeles edition of The Deli back in March and made some headway with the NYC branch, by getting my press pass for the CMJ Music Marathon. Though my love for music is infinitely deep, I do have favorites, like: The Middle East, Mumford & Sons, Bastille, St. Lucia and Of Monsters and Men.

Please submit your band for CMJ coverage consideration through the comment section below, looking forward to listening to your music!

I’ll be accepting submission for the following genres only:

Alt Folk
Traditional Folk
Alt Rock

LA Band on the rise: Upset

Posted on:

Former Vivian Girls/Best Coast drummer Ali Koehler had been hinting at the possibility of forming her own project ever since she released a couple of tracks on her personal bandcamp account back in 2011. After a relatively quiet period, she’s steadily grown into her own just like her former bandmates with her own band Upset, a slyly crafted brand of cherubic pop punk fueled with insatiable hooks and nimble, fuzzed-out guitars reminiscent of beloved nineties local trio The Muffs with echoes of K Records cult favorites Tiger Trap. Though Koehler may be endowed by nature with an ear for melody, the songs do have an extra kick to them thanks to the support of the bandmates she’s enlisted, which include former hole drummer Patty Schemel and former La Sera guitarist Jenn Prince. Produced by Kyle Gilbride (who plays with emo revivalists Swearin’ and produced Waxahatchee’s breakthrough Cerulean Salt), She’s Gone (out on October 29th via Don Giovanni) is supercharged with the kind of crunchy noise pop that’s hard to escape once you’re engulfed in it. See them play live at Echoplex on October 24th at the Echoplex. – Juan Rodríguez

Guthrie Brown at The End 10.8

Posted on:

Guthrie Brown relocated to Nashville from Billings, MT.  By 18, he has already performed with the Lumineers, The Thermals, North Mississippi Allstars, and Buddy Guy. When not racking up an incredulous list of stage mates, he records at home and performs with his compatriots. He has crafted a demo of reflections of love, family, and heartbreak positively gasping with the exuberance of youth. Listen to "Family Tree" to get a sense of being a teenager underneath big Montana skies. I’m excited to hear what comes after a few heartbreaks and legally purchased beers. He also delivers a rowdy live performance, the next of which is October 8th at The End. -Terra James-Jura

Electro-pop from New Jersey: Blood Cultures

Posted on:

New Jersey’s cryptic new electronic solo artist, Blood Cultures, has emerged into the local scene with a seductive and well thought-out debut single, titled “Indian Summer.” Although a biography is not provided online, and the one picture available conceals the musician’s face, there’s obviously something humble about this music, that could be described as a complex yet catchy blend of LCD Soundsystem’s fanfare with the ambience of Tycho, complemented by the artist’s own soothing vocals, that sounds like they are coming out from a bedroom’s corner. Listen to “Indian Summer” below via Soundcloud and wait to see what else Blood Cultures has up his sleeve. –Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

New Video: Double Decker Music Series: Episode 1 – Charles Cohen & Birdie Busch

Posted on:

Here’s a new video from the inaugural Double Decker Music Series (October 1, 2013), an intimate mobile concert experience and city tour on an open-top double-decker bus, which was hosted by Sebastian Petsu and featured Charles Cohen and Birdie Busch. It ran into technical difficults along the way, but that only addded to the experience. Special thanks to videographer Bob Sweeney for sharing his footage of this unique event.

Video: Mikal Cronin, “Peace of Mind”

Posted on:

Following the day in the life of a motel maid, played by Mary Timony, “Peace of Mind,” is the latest video off of Mikal Cronin’s MCII. Cronin’s ability to expertly craft pop melodies while subtly tugging at your heartstrings pulls you into the cinematic experience. Feeling more like an indie short film, the video leaves you with a complexity of unsettled enigmatic emotions. Paired with the song’s folk influenced underpinnings, you’re left wanting to follow the maid on her decisive journey through the parking lot as the strings strum on. Mikal Cronin plays the El Rey Dec. 3 with Redd Kross. – Jacqueline Caruso

Weekly Feature: Julian Fulton – live at DROM on 10.10

Posted on:

Julian Fulton and the Zombie Gospel are kind of what you want to hear out of a rock’n’roll band nowadays. There’s enough vintage energy in their music to make it classifiable as rock n’ roll, but not enough for it to sound derivative and boring. It’s probably the eery optimism lurking within the melodic, psyched out jams. Check them out live at DROM on October 10 with Swear and Shake, Everest Cale and Jesse Denaro. – Links: John McGovern interview with Julian Fulton.
