Although hip-hop isn’t exactly my most knowledgeable subject, one local emcee reminded me of why I went through that black sheep obsession in high school. Cincinnati native, Don Sdot is a refreshing break from the overwhelming tide of today’s spoiled hip-hop. Don Sdot ditches the commercial glam many rappers bank on and delivers concise, honest lyrics in such a relaxed way that you feel as if you’re in a conversation with him. One of his latest tracks, “The Fro,” mixes aspects of jazz, soul and funk, while still retaining that raw hip-hop intensity. It’s clear that Don Sdot can deliver hard-hitting lyrics dealing with daily struggles but I’d be interested in hearing a track he took some fictitious freedom with. Or maybe I just want to hear a story? Either way, check out Don Sdot for some Nashville hip-hop you’re missing out on! -Michael Perry
New Music Video: “So Far So Long” – Nightlands
Below is a new music video from Nightlands, a.k.a. Dave Hartley, for the track "So Far So Long," off his latest album Oak Island (Secretly Canadian). It premiered yesterday over at Noisey, and was directed by David S. Kessler, who filmed the footage in northern Iceland as part of the international exhibit, "Due North," opening January 2014.
The Luck of Eden Hall “Victoria Moon”
The new album from psych veterans The Luck of Eden Hall, Victoria Moon, fits in perfectly with blooming ’90’s nostalgia movement. I am getting a strong Matthew Sweet vibe, but that might just be me. Soaring guitar solos, fuzz and distortion, but what sets this album apart is the fantastic storytelling.
The imaginary through out creates a mythology that draws you in and transports you to another world. "Her names all mixed up in rhymes/She used to sing and dance in green /Now she slow motion screams." from "She’s Your Anodyne". Through out the album you will tales of women told in an interesting and complex way.
The Lower 48 Album Release Show w/ The French Cassettes and Survival Guide at Bottom of the Hill TONIGHT
Bottom of the Hill will be hosting an eclectic line up tonight for The Lower 48 album release show TONIGHT. This band takes sounds from the 60s flower power era, and puts a modern twist on them with a more contemporary rock sound. The French Cassettes will be headlining the show. This band just released their new album, Gold Youth this past summer and are coveted musical group in the indie rock scene. Their sound is poppy, happy and would fit in on summer playlist. Survival Guide, which features members from Tsunami Bomb and The Action Design infuses electronic music, dreampop, and indie all into one concoction of experimental melodies and encapsulating female vocals.
Make sure you make it out tonight! -Victor Casillas Valle
Wet announces debut EP + plays CMJ at Bowery and Santos
A few months ago we highlighted electro mellow-core duo Wet, a project that offers a musical recipe reminiscent of the wise, caucasian soul-pop of MS MR, but with an added personal twist consisting in a subtle quirkiness and an intriguing sonic spaciousness. The band in the last few weeks has unveiled a few new songs from the debut EP, which will be relased on October 15, during the CMJ Music Marathon. Check out "Dreams," streaming below, and see them live at Bowery Ballroom on 10.15 or at Santos Party House on 10.17.
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
Kenny Dennis “Directions”
Kenny Dennis (aka Serengeti) was busy this week. He released a new video for the track "Directions" from the recently released Kenny Dennis LP, and an instrumental edition of the same LP.
Where Is My Mind?: Buried Beds’ Brandon Beaver
With their debut release 2005’s Empty Rooms, Buried Beds caught the attention of critics and fans alike with its delicately lovely melodies and enchanting vocals led by Eliza Jones. However, its melancholic veneer didn’t creatively represent what the band members were feeling inside creatively, leaving us with about a half-decade gap before returning with a playful, upbeat new sound found on Tremble the Sails (our July 2010 Album of the Month). As Buried Beds get ready to celebrate the release of their latest LP In Spirit (Devinyl) at The Boot & Saddle tonight, they seem to be a seasoned group in touch and still fascinated with what they are producing, while effortlessly coming into their own creative space. We caught up with Brandon Beaver, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and one half of the “warehouse duo” that later became known as “Buried Beds” to talk about the evolution of the band, their new album, lessons learned and much more, which you can check out HERE.

Luke Temple announces new album + plays LPR with Celestial Shore on 10.14
Brooklyn psych-folk pioneer Luke Temple (we are still in love with his 2007, pre-Here We Go Magic, grossly overlooked album "Snowbeast"), and Celestial Shore, our cover artist for our recent summer 2013 issue, will share the stage this Columbus Day 10/14 at Le Poisson Rouge. "Otherworldly" seems to be the best way to describe both acts. Celestial Shore, with a more traditional indie-rock instrumentation, dive off into the deep-end with their reckless tempo changes, free form, and spacy palette. Then Luke Temple, who has a new album coming out on 10.15 on Secretly Canadian (preview "Katie" here), will rely on a more traditional song structure, using his imaginative lyrics and arrangements to bring novel sounds to the audience. It’s definitely going to be a fun night of music to strain your brain a bit. Tickets are available here. – Paul Jordan Talbot
Bully Releases Debut EP
Bully released their self-titled debut 7-inch vinyl EP on the 1st of October. It’s a fun four songs, heavy with guitar fuzz and crystalline vocals provided by Alicia Bognanno. This is what may have resulted if Kim Deal wandered into Pavement’s garage during a jam session. They’ve been busy around town, recently opening for Those Darlins at Mercy Lounge this past Friday. They’re making it all too easy to get sweaty palms around their virgin vinyl by offering it with every ticket purchased to their show this Friday, Oct. 11th at the Stone Fox with PUJOL and Study Hall. –Terra James-Jura
