Stream: light fm, “Voices in My Head”
Shoegazer’s light fm are ready to dazzle our ears once again with the release of their fifth studio album, ‘Voices in My Head.’ Filled to the brim with crisp sound design, it has the feel of 80s experimentation met with the bite of a true modern rock record. Josiah Mazzaschi, the brain child behind the band, is at the top of his songwriting game. We are streaming the title track below in advance of their record release show next Friday, Oct. 18. The relentless, driving bass bellowing beneath the ominously dissonant synthscape create the sense of madness surrounding the song’s hook. This psychizophrenic feeling becomes further cemented during the instrumentation after the bridge, where a beautiful cacophony of swirling, buzzing, arpeggiating synths and an impeccably mixed rhythm section nod to their 80s predecessors as you are driven deeper into the recesses of the mind of a lover forlorn. light fm’s technical prowess plays a big part in their appeal, but their true success is in their ability to craft a proper pop song without you noticing. Hear the new songs live October 18 at Complex. – Jacqueline Caruso
Is grunge back? Ceramics plays Lit Lounge on 10.11
Brooklyn’s brand new 2013 indie grunge-punk trio known as Ceramics have caught our attention with their effervescent passion for “Rawk” music. Although they claim a post-punk revival, they sound like a more modern and harder, Indie-infused Rick Springfield in more ways than one, with obvious jagged edges and turns. The grunge influence is a lot more evident than their classic tendencies, but all of it comes together in an audibly fulfilling way. They’re set to headline Lit Lounge on Saturday 10/12 with Flight School and Karana and you can listen to and download their debut EP titled ‘It’s Funny Because You’re Not Even Real’ via Bandcamp. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Weekly Feature: Brothertiger – live at The Deli’s Electro CMJ Stage on 10.15
Drawing from a more ambient corner of throwback synthpop than many of his contemporaries, Brothertiger’s John Jagos may wrap his melodies in layer upon layer of ethereal textures, but they’re unmistakably present. The Ohio University alumni member possesses an ear for a hook combined with a knack of interlacing his electronic instrumentation in a lush but never overpowering manner. See Brothertiger live with In The Valley Below at The Deli’s Electro CMJ Show at The Delancey on 10.16. – Link: Dean Van Nguyen’s interview with Brothertiger.
Weekly Feature: The Men
Do you think Brooklyn is still a good place for an emerging band to give the "Rock’n’Roll dream" a go?
Ben Greenberg: "I’m not sure it ever was, man. NYC has always been the cruelest mistress, you either dig the punishment or you move back to Peoria. most of us never had the option to move back home anywhere else, so here we are."

Pleasure Gap’s new release “Tropical Barn”
Pleasure Gap, a trio from the woody mountains of New Hampshire, have just release their new album “Tropical Barn”. There’s definitely a rural coldness to their sound, aggressive and trippy mixed with a slight folk twang. Reminiscent of old school Modest Mouse mixed with The Violent Femmes, the record is full of incoherent shouts and yelps, emotional outpourings, clean tone guitars, and distorted bass. Definitely give the track “Too Close” a listen; it’s a perfect intro to this psychedelic folk-rock outfit. Check out their new album here. – Paul Jordan Talbot
NYC indie-an pop at CMJ: Goldspot
Indian music influences are not very common in the indie scene, although al lot of casual music listeners think "indie" means "Indian" – "What did you say you play? Indian pop??" Well, NYC pop band Goldspot it’s one of the few bands that would actually anser "YES!" to that question, since they are led by an Indian man who isn’t afraid to let his roots shine. Brainchild of singer/songwriter Siddhartha Khosla, the band just released its 3rd full length album ‘Aerogramme,’ recorded with Beach Boys’ engineer Jeff Peters.
The band will be playing CMJ this year with a show on Tuesday 10/15 at the Co-Sign CMJ Rooftop Bash.
Red Fang Release New Album, Whales and Leeches 10.15
If you have yet to be introduced to the volatile sounds of Portland’s most accomplished rock act in recent years, Red Fang, allow me to present you to the controlled riot that is manifested by their third full-length album, Whales and Leeches. A follow up to 2011’s critically acclaimed Murder the Mountains, the new album captures a viscous energy by tying seismic rhythms with crisp, heavy guitar tones. Tracks like the roaring opener, “Doen” and “Behind the Light” (featuring Mike Scheidt of Yob) move technical lead lines through driving rhythms that shake the listener with ferocious dynamics. Other songs such as “Failure” and the hypnotic closer, “Every Little Twist” balance their heavy influences with an ethereal backdrop to create a sound that is simultaneously haunting and aggressive. The album is released on October 15th through Relapse Records, but thanks to the folks at Pitchfork you can stream the album in it’s entirety here. Listen, enjoy and try not to hurt your neck with all the headbanging. – Benjamin Toledo
