A NYC band that should have played CMJ this year: Honduras

Posted on:

Taking from the archives of Sid Vicious, Alex Turner and Bradford Cox, NYC’s local quartet and Hazy Noise-Pop artist Honduras has caught our attention with their warm buzz pop songs. Although not extreme enough to be quite punk rock, the 2012-founded band can be compared to a pop-punk Arctic Monkeys or a Deerhunter/Sex Pistols fusion. The Brit-sounding muffled vocals of Pat Phillips combined with the band’s knack for clean, well-tempered guitar work and percussion makes for a fun listen, which you can embark on in the form of the band’s newest track for the song “Son,” streaming below. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like Honduras has any shows scheduled for CMJ. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Elle Casazza @ Elbo Room

Posted on:

Elle Casazza released her debut EP, For Your Pleasure, earlier this year and has recently released a video for the title track. Casazza blends the classic jazz vocal style of a Ella Fitzgerald with a bit of the swing from a nostalgia driven band like Squirrel Nut Zippers, and a touch of Zoey Deschanel quirk and pop.

You can catch Elle Casazza at Elbo Room on Oct. 17th

Julia Easterlin plays Deli CMJ Stage on 10.16 at Rockwood

Posted on:

Her precise pair of vocal chords and one looping machine is all Julia Easterlin needs to surround a stage. During her live shows, she deconstructs the process, and builds layers slowly; the performance is part learning experience. She’s brought her brand of vocal-led experimentation to the TEDxWomen conference, audiences in Cuba and the Dominican Republic, and a few major festivals.

But tech sorcery is not what sets her apart. Jazz movement, a capella arrangements and world music flavor give Easterlin’s eclectic covers and originals flight, whether solo or with a band. Her voice is a consistent, trained instrument sometimes channeling Sarah McLachlan or Björk, sometimes beatboxers and birds. – Bianca Seidman

New Music Video & Free Download: “Diamond In The Rough” – Nicos Gun

Posted on:

Seems like Nicos Gun‘s stint in LA inspired an outrageous tale for their new music video for their latest single "Diamond In The Rough." The coke-fueled, softcore, action adventure was directed by Karl Beyer and Scott Ross. The track is off their upcoming album Dream Vacation that is scheduled to be released later this month. If you’d like to listen to "Diamond In The Rough" minus the moans and groans, gun shots and purposely bad Hollywood dialogue, then you can listen to and download it for free HERE.

Year of October “Behave”

Posted on:

As I was looking up Year of October on Facebook, I noticed that at the top of my "Invite your friends to like this page" list was JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound. There is some similarity between  “Behave,” off their album “Stories” and JC Brook’s “Rouse Yourself,” mainly because they sing ‘baby-‘ the same soulful, bitterweet manner. From there “Stories” digs deep into blues territory. Its heavy and biting, with organ and Phelicia Sullivan’s propensity to end phrases with a Patti Smith-esque uptick giving it plenty of personality. It’s good music for forgetting a no-good man, and the album is available for free on their bandcamp: yearofoctober.bandcamp.com/releases

Catch them at one of their many shows around Nashville this fall, the next going down at the Ruteledge on Oct. 17th. –Terra James-Jura

Carl Kavorkian Flowing From the Chest at The Fire Oct. 13

Posted on:
On The Happiest Sad Face, Carl Kavorkian’s collaboration with German producer Lou Cypher, you find an ominous, industrial backdrop that successfully complements the raw Mad Max-esque wasteland vibe that looms over their tracks. Kavorkian lets go of the responsibilities that heavily weigh on you as the producer, finding a point of focus in his verses flowing from the chest. He’ll be bringing his “happiest sad face” to The Fire tonight opening an evening of hip hop provided by the Breakfast With Gonzo Tour. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 9pm, $7, 21+ – Alexis V.

New Track: “Aquarium” – Younger Me

Posted on:

York/Lancaster indie-pop trio Younger Me is celebrating its 7" release tonight at The Fire with Lucy Stone and Family Vacation. Check out the psych-tinged A-side, "Aquarium," with its hypnotic keys, shifting bass groove and crisp, radio-ready vocals. Feels kind of right – now that the sun is out.

Balance and Composure Opening for Title Fight at Union Transfer Oct. 12

Posted on:
Doylestown quintet Balance and Composure recently released their second studio album The Things We Think We’re Missing on No Sleep Records. The thirteen-song LP is at once scathing and sympathetic; they are great at being both quiet and loud. The production of it really helps capture the bands dynamics, and was helmed by local knob-turner Studio 4’s Will Yip, who is constantly bolstering his already impressive resume. They’ll be bringing their frenzied alt-rock to Union Transfer tonight to open for another of Yip’s emerging clientele Kingston’s Title Fight, who has been rocking out at YMCA’s since 2003, but they didn’t record their proper debut Shed until signing to SideOneDummy in 2011. Both their first and last year’s Floral Green were recorded with Yip. Given the bands seasoned history, it isn’t surprising that their latest album is fat-free. Vocalist/guitarist Jamie Rhodes delivers gravely melodies on top of a plethora of jagged guitars in a honed and intentional assault. Both acts have been on a month-long jaunt across the country with Bethlehem duo Slingshot Dakota, who will also be supporting the evening along with Cruel Hand. The show is already sold out, so hopefully you have your ticket. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 8pm, $15, All Ages – Adam G.
