We all love our rugged rough and rowdy folk, but sometimes you just need some more elegant precise folk music. That’s what Joy Kills Sorrow excel at. Steeped in the Boston bluegrass scene of the past 5 years, these pickers are tight. It’s refreshing to see such a young band playing such challenging music and sticking true to their bluegrass roots with original songs. Emma Beaton’s vocals are simple dead center on the pitch – the perfect bluegrass voice. Check them out tomorrow at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 1 within The Deli’s Rootsy CMJ Show. Full schedule for that night here. – Paul Jordan Talbot

Tuesday: denitia and sene co-headline Deli Electro CMJ Stage at The Delancey
There’s something to be said about a newborn band that already has their own, unique sound. Smooth, soulful and dreamy at once, denitia and sene. merge genres to create their own penthouse lounge style music. Self-described as “film noir for audiophiles,” they are both mellow and dramatic, creating that perfect “rainy day” feel. Tracks like ‘Again (New Ride)’ could easily be featured in a modern day romance flick, while ‘Casanova’ is almost danceable. Going back to the slow and sensual R&B sounds of the 1990s, d&s play with nostalgia both through their sound and their lyrics, which makes them dangerously charming. – Sam Kogon

Yellabird’s Little Brother Makes Quite a Fuss
Boston’s Yellabird know how to pack an incredible amount of energy into a short time-frame. Their latest effort, Little Brother, may only be comprised of five tracks, but each one will blow your mind–guaranteed. The guitar sound on this record is so fat and loud and the drums are so heavy, I’m constantly amazed that such intensity can come from only two people. I reviewed their previous EP, Mountainosaurus, and while those songs were all heavy in their own right, Little Brother raises the bar exponentially higher.
The highlight of this album for me is "Darlin’, Sugar", with its fast pace and face-melting guitar work. I’d compare them to Queens of the Stone Age, but after listening to their songs for even a minute, you’d probably already guess that, and I’m sure they’ve heard that plenty of times as well.
Be sure to check out the band’s Facebook page for updates about future shows and any other wicked cool stuff they might have going on.

Courtesy Drop Releases Album “Songs to Drive to; Make Love and Cry to” 10.15
I hate the thought of the approaching cold weather, but it has a few redeeming values. The holidays acknowledge Johnny Mathis for the pimp he is, and the bleak days make dark, moody music much more appealing. This album by Courtesy Drop is going to find its way into my winter rotation. "Songs to Drive to; Make Love and Cry to" is a heavy collection of tracks with enough sullen guitar and screaming misery to scratch that emo itch, while retaining enough white-hot anger to keep it hardcore. My teen aged, Small Brown Bike-loving self would have flipped for these guys; I just appreciate them for giving me something to legitimize my seasonal depression. They hit the End November 7th. –Terra James-Jura
Vegatron – Single Release Party – Mohawk, 10/18/13, 11pm
Generally, I prefer singing to screaming but as far as screamers go, Vegatron will show you how it’s done. As the newest members of Eye in the Sky Collective, this heavy rock band out of Austin is releasing their single, "Shot My Fate", on Thursday at Mohawk during the AFI aftershow. Their album, Awakening, is scheduled for a release date next month. Opting for a no frills recording style, you’ll hear an honesty in this album that so many others have left behind. Check out this video for a teaser of what’s to come. –Written by Charise Sowells
Album of the Month: Bella Russia “Epaulet”
DC’s avant-indie trio Bella Russia are known for their awesome live shows, and that energy has easily transferred over into their debut EP Epaulet (released Sept. ’13.) The four tracks ooze with genius experimentalism, and each is a completely unique stand-out.
The first single, "Madame X" is a progressive instrumental anthem chock full of fuzzed out guitars lifted with echoing high notes before rolling into a mathy and brilliant chaos of sweet rock layers. Check out the video for it below.
Catch Bella Russia live at Comet Ping Pong on Oct 26.
