Bored With Four – Good Weird Pop Music

Posted on:

"Pop music you can’t dance to" is the description Bored With Four give for their sound and it’s about right. With a killer voice singer Andrew Brown and his band mates Nick Sollecito and Alex Chapman take the traditional pop song formula and smash it up in such a way that you can’t tear your ears away. Their EP We Are Friends* is a happy marriage of catchy melodies, simple lyrics, jazzy drumbeats and funky bass lines. Layered on top of all of this are the violin, synth, cello and viola. It’s a feel good combination and a distinctive sound that the band themselves describe as “weird”. Definitely good weird. – Brescia Mascheretti

Elizabeth & The Catapult play Deli CMJ Rootsy Stage tonight

Posted on:

Growing up in Greenwich Village, Elizabeth Ziman of Elizabeth & The Catapult, was trained from a young age as a pianist and studied classical composition at the Berklee College of Music. It was here that Ziman met her future bandmates, drummer Dan Molad and guitarist Pete Lalish and in 2004 Elizabeth & The Catapult was born. Ziman’s schooling is evident in the music she writes; intelligent, memorable melodies are carefully placed alongside sunny riffs and beautifully constructed lyrics. Shaped by Ziman’s clear powerful voice and their unique use of instruments, the band’s eclectic pop sound is one of a kind. See them tonight at The Deli’s CMJ showcase at Rockwood Music Hall – full lineup here. – Brescia Mascheretti

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Rootsy songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

The Love Club Set to Explode at The Fire Oct. 16

Posted on:
It first appears a bit grimy and ragged, unfiltered garage-rock scenario with the makings of an intense inferno that generates its initial signs of life down deep with guttural vocals and stick to your bones retro-fitted guitar licks that have a straight ahead yet fuzzed edge, comforting in its lowlight minimalist aggressive nature. The Love Club a combustible musical machine spearheaded by David Mitchell Esparza, a.k.a. (((taco))), appropriately hits The Fire tonight. It’s a controlled slow-building burner, which continually gathers strength until it reaches an apex exploding with fervor.  They’ll be joined by the grungy duo of Joe Musciano and Sean Sacks, a.k.a. Great Red Spots, weaving fuzzed out high-octane guitar lines with barricade bashing drums. The bill also includes indie-rocking quartet Dead Tenors. Mythical Minneapolis noise rock trio Is/Is and atmospheric Georgia rockers New Madrid round out the evening. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave, 8pm., $7, 21+ – Michael Colavita

8 off 8th Standouts at Mercy Lounge 10.14

Posted on:

This weeks free music buffet at Mercy Lounge was fun as usual, but this week two acts really stood out.

Omega Swan had me reminiscing of going to Buzz Fest as a youngin’, just waiting for Slash to come out with the failed Velvet Revolver. Delivering booming grooves and plenty of wah-soaked guitar solos, Omega Swan had every long haired kid in a black t-shirt head banging. I even caught a woman who had to be over 70 air-drumming along. No matter what genres you’re inclined to, it’s hard to deny that Omega Swan can entertain.

Up next, Dogtooth took the stage with their more relaxed set of looming melodies and swelling effects. Dogtooth blends an interesting mix of alternative rock with shoegaze tendencies that appealed to the younger crowd. The layered effects and buzzing fuzz create a wide sound nicely balanced by the rhythm section. Dogtooth has a split coming out in the near future so be sure to keep an eye out for that!  -Michael Perry

Halsted Churches and Buckeye Knoll Play Brick & Mortar Music Hall TONIGHT

Posted on:

TonightBrick & Mortar Music Hall will be hosting a night of some eclectic local talent. Halsted, the brainchild of the singer/songwriter Ryan Auffenberg, brings a 90s reminiscent sound – with adult alternative inspirations, that will make you feel like you’re gliding through the soundtrack of an inspiring romantic comedy. They’re fun, addictive, and have a clean, nostalgic sound. Churches brings a blend of distortion, a heavy rhythm section and a combination between indie, rock and roll, and punk rock. They’re catchy and intense, which creates a mix that is hard not to listen to. Buckeye Knoll‘s music is happy and inspiring. Their lyrics feature an array of motivating lines, but their sound also displays a soft folk and acoustic turn, bringing a combo that will ease you into the night.

Be sure not to miss this night filled with great local talent! -Victor Casillas Valle

EMEFE headlines Deli CMJ Funk/Afrobeat Stage on 10.17 at Spike Hill

Posted on:

EMEFE, pronounced “M-F-A,” begins with a strong foundation in traditional Afrobeat, but their musical director, Miles Arntzen, strives to create greater depth and breadth in his compositions. Compounded by the shakes and bangs of an evolving and dynamic percussion section, few further tricks are necessary to engage even the most complacent crowd. It comes down to a matter of swagger, and EMFE serves it up in true Brooklyn fashion. Their Afrobeat aesthetic is characterized by nods to the funk of Prince as well as some aspects of psychedelia and art rock. See them live at Spike Hill when they headline the Deli’s Afrobeat/Funk Stage on Thursday 10.17.

Circadian Rhythms & On the Water Opening for Saintseneca at JB’s Oct. 15

Posted on:
Circadian Rhythms take you away to a simpler time when families and friends huddled around the lone AM radio in the home to enjoy the purity and beauty of music together. Those magical times can be captured once again at one of the band’s live performances, and you’ll have the opportunity to do so this evening when they open for Columbus, Ohio four-piece Saintseneca, who have a new release coming out soon via Anti Records, at Johnny Brenda’s. Circadian Rhythms just started working on their first album in two years so they’ll most likely have some old-timey new tunes for you. Also joining in on the retro fun are Deli faves and West Philly oddball folkies On the Water. They’ve been touring heavily before and since the release of their LP False Starts so you can expect their performance to be tight in the loosest way possible. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
