Weekend Warrior, October 18 – 20

Posted on:
For those of you who were smart enough not to head up to NYC this weekend for CMJ, I look forward to seeing you tonight at Johnny Brenda’s for The Lawsuits’ release celebration. The local four-piece has been garnering much praise from major music media outlets for their most recent album Cool Cool Cool, and this evening is a good opportunity to congratulate the lady and gents and hear how the new LP transfers to a live setting. Please take a look at our recent interview with The Lawsuits’ Brian Dale Allen Strouse below, and make sure to swing by JB’s where they’ll be joined by pop-rock trio The Fleeting Ends and buzzing high schoolers The Districts, who should probably have a sleepover party in the venue’s green room after the show since they’ll be back on stage tomorrow evening opening for the sold-out White Denim show. Expect tonight to be a love fest full of Philly folkies. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Dreambook Opening for Break It Up at KFN Oct. 18

Posted on:
After releasing their first, full-length album, Only Shadows, earlier this year, Dreambook is back this evening at Kung Fu Necktie. Their sound is a lo-fi shoegaze, but within the fuzzed-out guitar and distorted vocals lays a heavy-handed drum. This mix of obscured and distinct sounds gives the music an almost ominous feel. Listeners must push through the forceful drum to get to the band’s thoughtful lyrics, making their impact even more satisfying. They open for indie-pop/rock trio Break It Up. Over the summer, the band released an eponymous LP full of fun and infectious tunes. While their music comes off as innocuous yet driving power-pop, it’s their lyrics that really pack a punch. Both bands are more than what they seem, making the live stage a perfect place to discover their distinct sounds. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+- Shaylin O’Connell

Where Is My Mind?: The Lawsuits’ Brian Dale Allen Strouse

Posted on:
The Lawsuits have been steadily building their reputation in the local music community as a rollicking live act. However, with their latest LP Cool Cool Cool, which was produced by Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man, Grandchildren, etc.), the band has stepped up their game in the recording studio. Armed with their finest album to date, The Lawsuits will be celebrating its release tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. We caught up with frontman Brian Dale Allen Strouse to chat with him about the making of Cool Cool Cool, how to write a love song, and much more, which you can check out HERE.

The People Electric Record Release at Club 21 10.19

Posted on:

The music world can be big and confusing, however The People Electric make good rock n’ roll seem simple. Your head nods because the music is catchy and cool, toes start tapping from the infectious rhythms, and you just might get the urge to throw a TV out of a hotel window. The People Electric blend generous layers of early punk with voluptuous heavy metal and some fat riff work. Your ears will feel like they are in a whirling hurricane inferno of rock and elegantly orchestrated chaos. One of the many things that makes their music so appealing is the way they combine simple straight forward instrumentals with raw passion that oozes through your speakers, headphones, or whatever listening device you happen to have. It’s that raw passion that rattles your teeth and makes you believe the music. I had the pleasure of sitting down and listening to the tracks they currently have up on Soundcloud and I was sold. In particular I enjoyed the dirty, nasty, sleazy downright reckless track “Detroit Hooker Fight” (10 bonus points for a killer track name!). The People Electric are slinging the kind of honest rock n’ roll the world is deeply in need of. You can check them out live this Saturday the 19th at Club 21 for the release of their new 7” record. – Cory Heunnekens

TONIGHT: TEEN headlines Deli/Pianos Indie CMJ Stage

Posted on:

After releasing their debut full-length in 2012, TEEN also unveiled a new EP that showcases an impressive artistic growth, striking a very personal balance between eastern sounding melodies, detuned synth lines and guitar parts that flirt with the golden days of prog rock (think early King Krimson). Read more about them in this issue’s feature about Psych Rock in NYC. See them tonight at The Deli/Pianos Indie CMJ Stage.

Here’s to You – Your Rival Record Release at Anna Bananas 10.18

Posted on:

Bouncy rhythms and story-time metaphor lyrics like "I’m a little spraycan" are certainty sweet, but don’t let the full and fuzzy twee of Your Rival fool you. They describe themselves as writing "fun songs about horrible things" and tear into swift lo-fi garage rock laden with yowling chorus anthems and rolling guitar, especially during live sets. Anyone that went to last year’s Howling House (check out the performance here) can attest to the band’s awesome bombardment upon the ears. They celebrate the release of their first LP, Here’s To Me with a free, all-ages show at Anna Bananas Cafe, with Lee Corey Oswald, Our First Brains, and Soft Skills. Here’s To Me officially drops on Party Damage Records October 22nd. – Brandy Crowe

New Music Video: “Cloud 9” – Reek

Posted on:

Here’s a moving and pretty adorable new music video from Reek (a.k.a. Rookie McFly) for the track "Cloud 9," which is off his forthcoming LP F.a.n.T.a.s.y. that will also have collborations with Philly hip-hop vets Freeway and Reef The Lost Cauze. The single and video is dedicated to his cousin Raheem "Muck" Williams, who had passed away from a fatal car accident. It was directed by Quo Productions’ Chop Mosley and Sanfordd Jenkins. You’ll also notice South Philly’s Beautiful World Syndicate and Lorenzo’s getting a little love in the footage. Also some love goes out to his mom for sporting a Nirvana t-shirt. Enjoy!

TONIGHT: Ski Lodge headlines Deli/Pianos CMJ show

Posted on:

There are a number of overused adjectives that music critics abuse, but sometimes a word to describe a band’s work just comes to your head and won’t leave. For Ski Lodge, that term is "jangly." Their brand of jangly pop is too refined to be called surf, and its main attraction is exactly this refinement. They do not overstay their welcome, making for a concise sound that will (somehow) make you pine for the laziness of an August heat wave. See them tonight play The Deli’s CMJ Indie Stage at Pianos.

TONIGHT: Total Slacker headlines Deli/Pianos CMJ show

Posted on:

If you’re old enough to remember the ’90s, you probably remember it as mostly being about VHS tapes, crystal pepsi and long-lasting flannel. And that’s exactly how Total Slacker remembers it too, commemorating the twilight hours of the 20th century with a set filled with odes to "Full House" and "Jurassic Park." It all might be a joke, if it weren’t for how well they make it all sound. The Brooklyn trio may nod to early Weezer with their loose and dirty grunge, but singer/songwriter Tucker Rountree bakes his own kind of fuzzy bud into his Fender, keeping the party moving way past Y2K. The band’s just finished putting the final touches on the followup to their 2011 debut "Thrashin," and are set to premiere it at CMJ. – Check out an old video below. Arkansas Elvis Release Debut Album “Yvette”

Posted on:

Arkansas Elvis released their album “Yvette” October 5th. Being prone to snap judgments, I was expecting something entirely different and possibly banjo-driven prior to my first listen.  Instead, my ears were met with the seething offspring of Alice in Chains and The Deftones. Cognitive dissonance aside, it’s a solid bid for the hearts of Nashville’s alt-metal fans. This track “Opening” sums up the Arkansas Elvis experience. They play at the Springwater Supper Club November 3rd with The Jerks and The Cadaver Dogs. –Terra James-Jura
