TAUK releases album “Homunculus” + tours East Coast

Posted on:

Releasing their full-length album “Homunculus” under the guidance of Grammy-winning producer Robert Carrranza (Mars Volta, Jack Johnson) earlier this year, New York City’s TAUK prepares for a series of showcases in the coming days. The band produces sophisticated instrumental music without apparent effort – it could be described as post rock with heavier jam and funk influences.

Opening track “Dead Signal” (streaming below) evolves from mellotron wind whooshes to dominant guitar riffing over a rock solid bass and drums backbeat. Guitar phrasing and chord progressions echo the great fusion and jamband artists like Allan Holdsworth and The Allman Brothers Band. While keyboard textures throughout the album bring to mind the classic work of Brian Auger with his Oblivion Express. Returning to their home city after an extensive tour through the midwest and southern states (after earlier select opening dates supporting Robert Randolph and the Family Band this summer), the band will play Music Hall of Williamsburg on September 28th with Dopapod and Chromatropic. – Dave Cromwell

Clementine & the Galaxy release new video + play Pianos tonight (09.20)

Posted on:

“Lazer Gunz” is the name of the new single by Clementine & the Galaxy (a live video of the song here). On it, guitarist and composer Mike MacAllister pushes the dramatic energy to its extreme, which singer Julie Hardy more than keeps up with, through a fierce vocal performance that perfectly melds neon with emo. If it all feels kitsch at times, “Lazer Gunz” is also unforgettably melodic, a trademark of the band’s core strength. Too bad there aren’t any robot films out there that eschew political paranoia for sweet, old school romance. It beats war. Catch Clementine at Pianos this Friday, September 20th at 11pm. – Brian Chidester

“Roommate’s Girlfriend” by Blank Range

Posted on:

Blank Range is one of those bands that will leave you wondering how you’ve never heard about them before.  "Phase II," their only release (which can be purchased here on tape or digital download), is an eclectic mix of blues, soul and twang. Tasteful use of dynamics and a contagious percussion section sets Blank Range apart from the flood of other acts attempting to meld the intimacy of soul with the energy of rock’n’roll. Songs like “Roommate’s Girlfriend” effortlessly deliver that late-night-drive aesthetic that makes "Phase II" tough to stop listening to. -Michael Perry

Alanna Royale at the Basement 9.20

Posted on:

Alanna Royale has a voice like honey; no wonder she’s generated so much buzz. She and her high energy 5-piece band have proven to be cornerstones in Nashville’s small but powerful soul scene, all without the help of lame puns (up until this point.)  “Animal” is the superb single off their deput EP “Bless Her Heart.” They play at 9pm at the Basement Friday night with JC Brookes and the Uptown Sound, Treetop Flyers and Andrew Combs Midnight Steelism. -Terra James-Jura

New Track: “This Body Grows Back” (Demo) – Josh Jones

What does Josh Jones sound like when he’s not rockin’ out with theatrical power-pop quartet Univox? Below is a sampling with "This Body Grows Back," a demo that’s full of heartbreak and gut-wrenching vocals. You can feel more with Jones tonight at JR’s where he’ll be making his last Philly solo appearance of the year.

Noteworthy NYC Electronica: Infinity Shred

Posted on:

The Miami Sound has come to NYC. “Miami Vice,” that is. First Yacht Rock, and now this. Turns out EVERYTHING is psychedelic if you wear the proper lenses, which, for those of us who like to go on magical mystery tours, is once more a reminder of the infinitude of the universe. With that in mind, consider Infinity Shred’s feature-length LP “Sanctuary,” a synth-prog pastiche that proves the ephemeral’s refusal to ephemerate. And also that white pixie dust is not bound to leave the atmosphere anytime soon. – Brian Chidester

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Electro songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Battleme EP Release at Bunk Bar 9.20

Posted on:

Portland’s songwriter extraordinaire, Battleme is back with a new label, new band members, and a new album that officially releases on Oct 8, 2013. Weight On The Brain (El Camino Media) is the follow up to a highly acclaimed and prominently featured self-titled first in 2012. Although the band’s founder, Matt Drenik (former member of Austin based band Lions) has many accomplishments his belt, this new album and current band has been his main focus. He is a famously hard worker that never disappoints, especially when it comes to a live show. Now a four piece, this band can deliver a sound with immense depth and raw flavor. The wide variety of songs they play shine a light in just about every direction of the musical spectrum, and are brought together by Matt’s etchy vocals and timeless songwriting. “Just Weight” is the first released song from the new album and immediately proves that rock and roll isn’t dead, in fact it’s just begun. – Colin Hudson
