Oh Dang Lo Mein’s record, “OMEN” was released this March on Blacktooth Records, and offers up 10 tracks of sweet riffs and groovy harmonies. But beneath the charm of a cute band name and cute sisters Liz and Lilly manning the instruments reside lyrics that are masterful, poignant, and dark. The album zigs into blues and zags into soul, but some of the catchiest hooks are a tongue-in-cheek nod to their name/background. “Hajima” is a perfect example. NYC Artists on the rise: Christine Hoberg tours Europe
From the (virtual) a cappella gem ‘All That Hate‘ to the demanding vocal chant in ‘I, I, I, I…,’ Christine Hoberg has never been one to back down from a vocal challenge. But her new track brings us to another place entirely.
‘You Can’t See Me’ is an irrepressible electro pop song. In an unlikely collaboration with Milwaukee alt-dance troupe Kiings x, the results are unlike any place she’s taken us to so far. With stomping beats and a downtempo attitude, the collaboration reveals even crazier heights for Hoberg, and a grounded sense of pop for Kiings X.
The Brooklyn artist promises a new album later this year (‘World WIthin’), and we are excited to see how a lot of the material she’s been playing live will translate to the new record. Check out ‘You Can’t See Me’ below. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Photo Recap: Mausoleum Party at PhilaMOCA
Things certainly got downright weird at the free Mausoleum Party this Friday at PhilaMOCA. Now, was it a good weird or bad weird? That really depends on whom you talked to at the event. The pre-show festivities consisted of the neighborhood boy Sean, who normally harasses us outside, harassing chosen attendees inside on stage with “yo mama so fat/ugly/etc.” jokes. There were questions answered from and about space by PhilaMOCA’s Chip Schwartz, an interview with the legendary Bigfoot (BTW: He /she/it looks a lot bigger on television.) and performances by Velvet Crayon (who smoothly rocked!), Charmaine’s Names (who brought the charisma and the balloons), and Ms. Teena Geist (who strutted on that fine line between art and someone needing the mic ripped from his/her hands). You can check out our photos from the evening HERE. (Photo by Brandi Lukas)

Weekly Feature: Ghost Pal plays Pianos on 10.03
Chamber popsters Ghost Pal may not be particularly spooky, but they certainly recall the ghosts of artists from across the board. Beatles-esque psychedelic accents, pop sensibility reminiscent of The Beach Boys, plus doses of R&B make it clear that Ghost Pal isn’t afraid to be blend unexpected ingredients. What ties their sound together is, ironically, that change is ever-present. Their lineup, fronted by Oliver Ignatius, is always fluctuating in size. The band’s "open door policy" just adds to their willingness to get weird… See them live at Pianos on October 3 – Links: Corrine Baggish’s Q&A with Ghost Pal.

New Single “Waves” from Miss Geo
Miss Geo is finally ready to put forth some glorious new electro-dance grooves, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. Their newest single, "Waves", is full of the fun, catchy melodies and snyth lines that I first came to enjoy when I reviewed a disc of theirs a couple of years ago. I can’t wait to hear what Miss Geo has planned for the rest of the album, but I’m sure it will be nothing short of wicked awesome.
If you’re in the area, Miss Geo will be playing The Middle East Upstairs on October 21. Show starts at 8PM. Tickets are $10, 18+ with proper ID.

J Ray Plays Flamingo Cantina, 9/24/13
If you’ve ever had a random photo op on 6th street with a giant, glow-eyed robot and a dude decked out in Superman gear holding a boombox over his shoulder, you may already be familiar with J Ray and his automaton counterpart, Boxman 3000. With the recent release of his first album, Some People, a music video for the track "When I Grow Up", and a comic book chronicling their adventures, J Ray and Boxman 3000 are hitting Austin hard. The feel good title track is one of the strongest on the album, with sweet sounding guitar licks and a fun, dancy chorus. But, there’s a whole lot of polished, heartfelt awesomeness throughout the rest of the album too.
Think the awkward genius of Beck meets Jack Johnson’s laid back sound and everything that we love about Flight of the Conchords. Make no mistake, J Ray is making all of the right moves, offering tons of fun and some serious musical talent. Check him out next Thursday at Flamingo Cantina with Dear Watson and Scares. A year from now, you’re not going to want to say that you missed the J Ray Train. – Written by Jodi Lang
