Commonwealth Choir Opening for Twin Forks at North Star Bar Sept. 26

Posted on:

Twin Forks, the new project of emo indie heartthrob and lead singer/guitarist of Dashboard Confessional Chris Carraba, hits the North Star Bar for their Philly premiere tonight. But it will also be a big show for former Deli Philly Featured Artist(s) Poll Winners Commonwealth Choir, as it will technically be the release party for their debut EP Shirtless, which they just shared a couple days ago. And if you purchased a ticket in advance off their Bandcamp page, you’ve probably listened to the EPs vibrant tracks a number of times now as it was part of the group’s pre-sale package deal that they were running. However, even if you didn’t, tonight will be the perfect time to experience why the band has been gaining a nice amount of buzz in a short amount of time. North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 7 PM, $13.50 – $16, All Ages – Bill McThrill

New Track & Music Video: “Bellport Bay” – Work Drugs

Posted on:

Funny – we were just thinking last night that Work Drugs have their first all-ages show at the First Unitarian Church tomorrow with Lockets and Bridge Underwater so they be releasing a new song and video to promote it. And of course, we found them this morning in our email. It’s a laidback jam – even more so than the usual Work Drugs number, and this time, the band took footage from the 1992 stinker Captain Ron, featuring one of our least favorite actors Kurt Russell and a comedian who hasn’t made us laugh in a long time, Martin Short. There are also guest vocals on the track from Philly native Ryan Williams. You can download "Bellport Bay" for free HERE.

Robert Ellis Announces Album Release

Posted on:

Fans of Justin Townes Earl, Alabama Shakes, or Old Crow Medicine Show may be familiar with their sometime-opening act Robert Ellis. The Nashville songwriter has set February 11th as the release date for his third album, “Lights from the Chemical Plant.” Ellis recorded it at The Casino in East Nashville with producer Jacquire King, who has worked with Tom Waits, Modest Mouse, and Kings of Leon. “Lights” is a stylistic departure from his previous folk and Americana roots, and is already receiving acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone. Ellis is preparing for an October tour with Deer Tick, and is no doubt at home practicing such crowd favorites as “Friends Like Those.” C’mon, not everyone can deadpan the words ‘chocolate puddin” in their lyrics. –Terra James-Jura

Show preview: J. Roddy Walston and The Business, Gringo Star, Scruffy & The Janitors at Czar, 9.28.13

Posted on:

Rock n roll, oh God how I’ve missed you.

It seems we, as music junkies, have been awash in bands that embrace dance music (disco), the bearded banjo hipster class (faux folk, neo bluegrass), or stupid songs about what a fox says; these are cold days to be a rock music fan. Well, fret no longer. On September 28, young retro rockers will converge on Czar Bar for an ass-shakin’ good time.

Headliners J. Roddy Walston and the Business are riding high on the success of its single “Heavy Bells,” taken from their latest effort Essential Tremors. With strong airplay on stations across the country, including KC’s own 96.5 The Buzz, J. Roddy Walston’s blend of barroom rock, piano soul, and down-and-dirty boogie has lit a fire in an otherwise dark, rehash-filled world.

Great bouncy songs like “Marigold” (a tune that would make Fats Waller and Leon Russell proud), the jaunty “Black Light,” The Band-influenced “Nobody Knows” or the sock-hop-ready, fuzz-drowned “Tear Jerk” drive an album as refreshing as a mojito on the beach.

Joining J. Roddy and the Business will be indie stalwarts Gringo Star and St. Joseph’s own Scruffy and the Janitors. Gringo Star blends the influences of British Invasion (think The Kinks mixed with Supergrass) with ‘90s alternative to make a racket that is as moving as it is fun.
Scruffy and the Janitors, a local favorite known for the high energy of their performances and musicianship well beyond their years, draw from references like electric blues, alternative, ragtime and punk rock to create a sound that’s familiar, yet fresh. Be ready to hear some new songs from Scruffy as the trio is readying its second full-length album Friendship Forest to be released in the upcoming months on This Tall Records. You may hear splashes of Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes, or The Animals within their sound, but as soon as vocalist/bassist Steven Foster sings the first note, it’s a whole new ballgame.

So, if you are missing rock ‘n roll or want to hear some new, young talent while the tickets are cheap and the room is intimate, bring yourself down to Czar this Saturday, September 28. You will not regret it.

The rock show starts at 8:00 pm. It’s 18+, $10 advance and $12 at the door. Check it out if you can.

Breakdown Valentine Releases New Album and Plays Release Party at Rickshaw Shop TONIGHT! – 9/26

Posted on:

The talented, female fronted – psychedelic, shoegaze experimental rock band, Breakdown Valentine is releasing their new EP, Beautiful Distraction today. We’re really into what Olivia Barchard is doing with her new music project (with guitarist Allen Davis and new drummer Andres Lopez), and we completely implore you to check out the band’s album release event at Rickshaw Shop TONIGHT. Supporting bands, Flaamingos and I Am Animal will bring a heady and sensual atmosphere to the night’s celebratory event.

Breakdown Valentine is a great sounding, succinctly beautiful, heavy live band. Their use of reverb and washed out guitar tones and synths along with live drums makes for a thick and sexy sonic experience. Barchard’s voice is elegant and professional. Make sure you make it out to the Rickshaw Shop to support this new and hardworking local band. -jordannah elizabeth

Moons of Mars Release ‘Loser’ EP, Play the Echo Tonight

Posted on:

Brothers Giovan and Mario Polanco, aka Moons of Mars, are bringing their guitar-driven, indie electro-pop to The Echo tonight in celebration of the release of their debut EP, ‘Loser.’ Stream the title track below with its slick pop production and R&B influenced swagger. The unquestionably catchy tune gives you the impression the brotherly duo are embracing the donning of the suit and tie. They still maintain that rebellious JMSN attitude towards pop music that infuses just the right amount of grit into the arrangement. While the hook will be running through my head all day, it’s those sultry guitar licks that I’ll be dreaming about. Catch them with a full band live tonight at The Echo with Pop Noir and Beat Club. – Jacqueline Caruso

Rubblebucket is back with EP “Save Charlie” + plays Rockwood on 10.01

Posted on:

Rubblebucket, one of the most fun NYC based band to witness live (and also on record), originated from the very jammy Vermont scene, but through the years progressively morphed its musical offerings into a form of pop that’s at once multifaceted, danceable and extremely enjoyable. They just released a new EP entitled "Save Charlie" – the title track is streaming below, but yo ucan stream it in its entirety here. They’ll be playing at Rockwood Music Hall on October 1 – a way too small venue for them.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

From The Deli NYC’s music submissions: Inland Traveler plays Rockwood on 10.02

Posted on:

Inland Traveler is that cozy bed and breakfast you pull over to and stay at for an evening. With their comforting blend of Appalachian harmony and gospel truths, the folk trio has a firm sense of family invested in their home recordings, and it shows in their latest single ‘November Moon‘. A song giving timely advice a home amid banjos and singer Katie Locke’s cooing alto. Check it out below and see the band when they play with Andrew James at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 on Wednesday, October 2nd. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
