From Our Open Blog: Post Honeymoon @ Burlington (tonight!)

Posted on:

Chicago post-punk duo Post Honeymoon’s union transcends their wedding vows. On their sophomore record, Second Skin, the married pair eschew guitars in favor of hip-hop and dub arrangements that swirl seamlessly with Rachel’s keyboard chops and Nick Cave-esque vocals and Nick’s monster hits of the kit. Think Hammond organ, Clavichord and Melotron over Timbaland-meets-James Murphy MPC grooves, steered by primal drumming.

Though a stark sonic departure from the band’s sparse, haunting 2009 S/T debut, Second Skin continues to traverse dark topics, as heard on the album’s debut single, "Kid With a Gun", written days after the tragic Newtown school shootings. Recorded and produced in just eight days with the venerable Bill Skibbe (Wild Belle, The Kills, Fiery Furnaces), Second Skin is a nine-song collection that ultimately broke every rule the duo had set for itself, and the pair is all the better for it.

Record release show on Friday, September 6 (tonight!) at the Burlington, with We Are Hex and Bone & Bell.

Posted on:

a.k.a. music and Philebrity host another exciting FREE First Friday show at their homebase this evening, and it will be a homecoming of sorts for Lantern, who are still touring in support of their thunderous riot of a new album, Rock N’ Roll Rorschach. So it will be a good opportunity to catch Zachary Devereux Fairbrother’s nefarious guitar hijinx before he packs up for North Carolina tomorrow. a.k.a. music, 27 N. 2nd St., 7:30pm, Free, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Terry Malts Album Release with Synthetic ID and Pinhead at Thee Parkside TONIGHT

Posted on:

Tonight at Thee Parkside, check out a punk centric line up for Terry Malts’ release of their new album “Nobody Realizes This Is Nowhere”.

Terry Malts will be kicking off their US tour at tonight’s show! Their new album features an array of classic punk rock elements like sing-a-long choruses, simple, yet effective, guitar riffs and a heavy drum section that keeps you on the edge of your seat with each song. Synthetic ID has a more lo-fi sound with a distinguishing guitar sound and hardcore 80s-esque vocals, which takes elements from acts like SCREAM, Minor Threat, and other bands of the era. Pinhead, a Ramones tribute band, will also be covering tunes from the 70s punk group.

Don’t miss out on this mix of Bay Area punk bands! Victor Casillas Valle

From the NYC’s online music submissions: Met City

Posted on:

It’s time to feel big again. Met City is as epic as Opera, as large as Tchaikovsky, and as bubbly and fresh as any pop tune you want buzzing around your head. And if you have any doubts, just watch their swashbuckling medieval court re-enactment for ‘Chess Street.’

Material like the four tracks from their last EP ‘Stockholm Fancy‘ infuses the best sentiments from all of these worlds. It’s a string quartet unleashed atop rolling piano lines. All held together by singer/songwriter Loren Beri’s perfect pitch baritone, infusing the group with a breezy sound not unlike Ra Ra Riot’s earlier material. The band promises to play new shows soon, so keep your passenger pigeons on the ready, and check out ‘Chess Street’ below. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Stream: Wildcat! Wildcat!, “Garden Grays”

Local trio – soon to be international sensation – Wildcat! Wildcat! are set to release their debut self-titled EP on Sept. 17 on Downtown. The first single, “Garden Grays,” is filled with their signature sparkling keyboards, lithe falsetto, and groovy bass lines to which anyone within earshot instinctively bobs their head. The EP features old favorites, “The Chief,” and “Mr. Quiche,” and my personal favorite, “Please and Thank You,” one of their more R&B influenced tracks. After being featured in the Sam Jones-directed documentary alongside Passion Pit, chronicling their experience at one show at SXSW, Wildcat! Wildcat! are poised for the rise to fame they deserve. Catch them live as they bring their dreamy, disco-tinged electro pop to The Troubadour Oct 17 supporting MSMR. Their shows are not only a master class in live performance, but as the only band whose Echo Residency I attended every single week last August, create an atmosphere of communal joy like few others I’ve seen. – Jacqueline Caruso

They’ve only been around for about a year, and already Katy Guillen & The Girls (formerly The Katy Guillen Trio) have taken Kansas City by storm with their compelling, proficient brand of blues and rock. Guillen, along with “The Girls”—bassist Claire Adams and drummer Stephanie Williams—have big plans for the rest of 2013. They’ve released a series of singles, and they’re finalists for the 2013 KCBS Kansas City Blues Competition this Saturday at Knuckleheads. We’ll find out more about them here.

The Deli: Down and dirty: 1 sentence to describe your music. What is it?

KG & The Girls: Rock and roll, heavy blues, lots of guitar, big drums, soulful harmonies, and songs about working to survive, dreams, and people.

The Deli: Tell us about …and then there were three, the EP you’re releasing. What should we expect?

KG&G: It’s more of a release of three singles and/or a taste of the band, than an official EP. Our goal is to release an album soon with these songs and more on it. They’re the first three originals of mine that we ever jammed on and made into band songs.

The Deli: Katy, you play solo and also played with Go-Go Ray in the past. How/why did you start this project with Claire and Stephanie?

KG&G: Katy: Last September, I got asked to open for the Royal Southern Brotherhood at Knuckleheads with 2 weeks’ notice, and said of course, not knowing who I would play with. I asked Stephanie and Claire if they would want to play this show, and maybe just be a band. They were stoked and we’ve been playing music together ever since. We were already good friends, and playing in Claire & The Crowded Stage together too, so the chemistry and comfort was there from the beginning.

The Deli: All three of you are members of several other bands around town. What is it about this specific project that’s most rewarding to each of you?

KG&G: Stephanie: It’s the coolest!

Claire: It’s nice because it’s a small group and we communicate very well together, musically and organizationally.

Katy: I second what Claire said. It’s easy and fun.

The Deli: What does supporting local music mean to you?

KG&G: Playing shows, seeing shows, and volunteering your time and music for community events and causes. It’s staying active with others, and when we support each other, we support the music.

The Deli: Who are your favorite local musicians right now?

KG&G: Everyone in The Grisly Hand, and Julia Haile.

The Deli: Who are your favorite not-so-local musicians right now?

KG&G: Those Darlins, Lily Hyatt, Delta Spirit, Heartless Bastards.

The Deli: What is your ultimate fantasy concert bill to play on?

KG&G: Heartless Bastards, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Carrie Brownstein.

The Deli: A music-themed Mount Rushmore. What four faces are you putting up there and why?

KG&G: Carrie Brownstein because she rules at life, John Bonam because he rules at drums, Janis Joplin because she rules at the stage, Jimi Hendrix because he rules at the guitar. Or, Steph’s 3 dogs and Claire’s dog, because they’re loyal.

The Deli: Where can we find you on the web?

The Deli: What other goals do KG & The Girls have for 2013?

KG&G: Play shows, travel more, and record!

The Deli: Always go out on a high note. Any last words of wisdom for the Deli audience?

KG&G: Have fun, love it, and don’t turn your back on a good thing!

You can catch KG & The Girls anytime in the next few days! Tonight they’ll be at BB’s Lawnside BBQ (Facebook event page), tomorrow they’re playing a benefit for the Sherwood Foundation, and they round it out Saturday at Knuckleheads for the KCBS Blues Competition from 2-6 p.m. The winner of this round goes to Memphis in January to represent Kansas City at the International Blues Challenge. Good luck, girls!

Also, for today only, you can download the band’s three-song release on Bandcamp at this link for free, or pay what you want.

Minden MFNW Set at Branx 9.5

Posted on:

Minden, one of the most soulful bands that Portland has seen in a long while, makes its MFNW debut tonight at Branx. Their songs are complex and involve many different arrangements with their two singers. The distinct keyboard sound brings a 70s pop feel that the drummer turns it into rock. This band may or may not be the result of seven children not listening to their gospel choir teacher, I wouldn’t know because their bio only says that “none of them have tattoos.” Nonetheless, these Kansas City transplants know how to put together conceptualized songs and can play them with fun energy that can even make a PBR spokesperson dance. – Colin Hudson
