Wolf in a Spacesuit readies new album, releases single

Posted on:

Wolf in a Spacesuit is one part glo-fi, and one part epic synth-pop. But don’t get me wrong, this is no ’80s soundtrack re-hash. Latest single, ‘IMOK’ (streaming), from upcoming record ‘Blighter Days,’ is everything ‘The Safety Dance’ never was. Filled with huge synths, charging drums, and a conceptual narrative that could only be found from a singer/songwriter with a name as cool as Algebra Huxley, (its true, I’ve checked), I have yet to be able to predict where things are headed in any of what I’ve heard so far from the Queens-based artist.

Like showcased in last record ‘Overlord of the Mountain,’ which charts 30+ chapters/songs (in just 10 tracks) and 20% of the proceeds go to protect natural waters, Algebra has some big ideas, and his vision couldn’t be more enjoyable to decode. That’s why we are curious to hear the new record when it finally comes out this November. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

David Yontz @ Stage 773

The genre of music comedy can be a little divisive. It tends to not sit right with both music purists and comedy nerds. However, David Yontz may be the man to bring both of those camps together.

Earlier this summer Yontz released a new full-length album called Simple Guy, and on the album’s title track he attempts to offend every group expect comedy and music nerds. No one is safe when Yontz picks up his guitar and attempts to take a humorous look at the insane world around him.

You can catch David Yontz @ Stage 773 on Sunday, Sept. 8th.

Sara Masterson

Posted on:

Sara Materson self-released her latest album, Always Beautiful, this week. The album is, as the title suggests, beautiful from start to finish. There is something refreshing about a traditional singer/songwriter crafting warm and heartfelt songs. There is nothing abstract, experimental, or genre stretching on this album, but sometimes there doesn’t need to be. Materson’s vocals would standout no matter the backing.

Bison Bison MFNW Set at Dante’s 9.7

Posted on:

Bison Bison is among a number of bands that will be featured at the Musicfest Northwest this week, and I must say these guys are exciting to listen to. Bison has that old school, heavy rock sound that will wrap its fingers around the primal part of your brain and squeeze until your head bangs. They combine a heavy 70’s sound with some garnish from 80’s metal movements. More good news, Bison doesn’t rip-off the greats of bygone days but rather pumps out their own unique brand and style of rock n’ roll. Heavy, thundering, percussive, near tribalistic drumming sets a nice foundation for epic, dirty, gritty-elegant guitar and bass riffs. The vocals are like a hand in a glove, guiding the listener through a dark soundscape like Virgil conducting Dante through hell herself. Come check these guys out at Dante’s this Saturday night at 10pm! – Cory Huennekens

NYC Hip Hop we dig: YC The Cynic’s new album “GNK”

Posted on:

Young talented rappers are a dime a dozen in NYC. But add in the social awareness of Dead Prez and wordplay that would make MF Doom chuckle and you have new name in the game worth following: YC The Cynic. His latest album “GNK” was released in August, and the album is beyond hot. Fans of Kid Cudi don’t want miss this, which is similar in sound (at times) but miles away in terms of lyrical content. Frank Drake’s production on the album is just as impressive as YC’s emcee-ing, with groovy beats filled with old soul samples. Fuel your body and mind with fresh NYC Hip-hop!

Old Light MFNW Set at Dante’s 9.6

Posted on:

There’s something about Old Light’s inherent need to experiment that keeps the listener intrigued in each moment of their sweeping, unbridled compositions. For every two steps into the psychedelic they take one step back into a more accessible territory, resulting in an effect that could bring the most tentative listener into a hypnotic, hallucinatory state. YES, their most recent release, is filled with such moments. Harmonies are broken between soft vocals and reverb drenched guitar tones, coloring even the most disorienting moments with a certain pop appeal. Old Light will be playing at Dante’s this Friday night as part of MFNW with La Luz, Mike Donavan and Ty Segall, catch their set at 10 pm. – Benjamin Toledo

Deadstring Brothers at the High Watt 9.7

Posted on:

Kurt Marschke of the Deadstring Brothers migrated to Nashville from Detroit in 2010, and though he left behind the poverty and packs of abandoned dogs in streets, the hardscrabble grit of the Motor City remained. That attitude and their fat, distinct guitar tone is what makes the band so satisfying to listen to. Deadstring Brothers have been tearing up the road in support of their April release, “Cannery Row.” They will be at the High Watt this Saturday, with Josh Farrow and Josephine and the Wildfront opening. Go if you think you know anything about rock and roll, but first watch them play in the elevator to Hell in this video for “Meet Me Down at Heavy Load." – Terra James-Jura

XNY releases LP “Orange” + plays Rock Shop on 09.21

Posted on:

New York duo XNY have always had a knack for crashing the party with their shove-it-in-your-face high energy folk-punk – or is that anti-folk, as some people call the mixture of those two genres? This isn’t a band you bring home to mom. They’re a group you sneak out to go see and come back late at night regrettably drunk and very much alive.

New track ‘Ride On’ (one of the highlights off their new album ‘Orange’) moves from deep confessional to unexpectedly roaring anthem. It’s a song with enough twists and turns to keep you very surprised when you finally reach your destination. Check it out below, and see them when they play Rock Shop on Sep. 21st. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets) – Photo by Diggy Lloyd
