Stagolee at the 5 Spot 9.14

Posted on:

Stagolee is a five-piece band that sound as if Florence Welch were raised in a trailer in the Dirty South with only one warped Supremes LP for her record player. But she wasn’t, and vocalist Katie Robertson doesn’t take herself near as seriously. This playful approach allows Stagolee to veer from soul-inspired ballads to fuzzy distorted garage rock in one cohesive swoop on their most recent album, “The Latest Craze.” “Lay It Down” slowly builds intensity and showcases Robertson’s bodacious croon. They hit the 5 Spot on September 14th. -Terra James-Jura

Interview – Carla Black, Founder of MEOW Con, 10/24-10/26

Posted on:

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Carla Black, the founder of MEOW Con. It went a little something like this…

DELI: What’s your background in terms of music?

CARLA: I was a professional, full time musician in the early ’80s. Played bass in an all-female band. My mom taught piano (still does) and my dad did publicity for local bands. Before playing in bands, I was the entertainment editor of my college paper so I reviewed music in that capacity. It seems like I have never been very far from it my entire life.

DELI: What is MEOW Con?

CARLA: MEOW Con is a conference for women in music – imagine SXSW as a conference for women that included many issues women face as artists. We talk about trends – like the recent Miley Cyrus and Michelle Shocked dustups – and more practical issues: how do you tour if you are a mom? how do you deal with hostility, put-downs, patronizing behavior – and take control of your career on your own level.

DELI: How did MEOW Con come to be?

CARLA: I founded, edited and published a magazine called ROCKRGRL for 10 years. When it folded in 2005 the archive was acquired by Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe (part of Harvard University) as part of its collection on American Women’s History. Since then I have been researching a way to bring back the feel of the magazine in a different way. So when I moved to Austin at the end of 2010, MEOW was born (it stands for Musicians for Equal Opportunities for Women).

DELI: Who is MEOW Con for?

CARLA: I want to reach women who are starting out in music before they see that sexism exists and support the women who have already been through it. It is a place to tell our stories and work together across all musical genres to make sure that women have a chance to do whatever they want. I recently met a young college student whose dream is to be a classical composer. But when she entered a classroom of 30 students and found she was the only female she changed her mind. When women’s perspectives are not included in the conversation, it’s bad for culture in general. We need to make sure that everyone has a chance to be as creative as they want to be – on their own terms.

DELI: What is the best part of MEOW Con?

CARLA: The upcoming conference – Oct 24-26. We will be honoring Suzi Quatro – the queen of rock. Suzi is originally from Detroit, has sold 55 MILLION records and in the US is probably best known as Leather Tuscadero on the hit TV show "Happy Days," which brought us Henry Winkler and Ron Howard. Suzi has been living in England since the ’70s and people don’t realize what a major influence she was on people like Kathy Valentine formerly of The Go-Gos (one of our keynote speakers!) and Joan Jett. If you like those artists, you will be blown away by Suzi – who is still a powerhouse.

DELI: Why should someone go to MEOW Con?

CARLA: All are invited to attend, but anyone who cares about women in music getting a fair shake should definitely attend. If you are a musician, care about a musician or ever wondered what it was like, this is a great place to go. Our panels are not just about how to make it in the music business, but an examination of why we still see so few successful all-female bands, why white male rappers are fully accepted but Miley Cyrus is "appropriating black culture" for twerking in that awkward Video Music Awards performance, etc. We will talk about areas where women are doing well, and where there are few. We’ll also strategize ways to make sure women like my friend who dropped out of the classical composition program find support and stay in the game.

DELI: Any exciting sponsors and partners lined up for this years MEOW Con?

CARLA: As a first year event the stakes are very high and we would appreciate any and all support. But some of the people coming are: Jennifer Batten (played guitar with Michael Jackson), Kathy Valentine (formerly of the Go-Gos), Patricia Kennealy-Morrison (one of the first female music journalists) and nearly 100 bands from as far away as Brazil and Singapore!

DELI: Anything else you want us to know?

CARLA: Tickets are available at www.meowcon.eventbrite.com. The official site schedule can be found here. Suzi Quatro’s dinner, which will also be honoring Margaret Moser of the Austin Chronicle, is $125 per person. Suzi will be performing 5 songs at the event with a full band, including her sister Patti, and a horn section. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of this historic moment!

San Fermin releases self-titled debut + plays LPR on 9.20

Posted on:

Straight out of Brooklyn, the orchestral pop phenomenon San Fermin will be releasing their debut self-titled LP on September 17th via Downtown Records. Fronted by classically trained composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone, the band (named after the Spanish festival of San Fermín, which features the often gruesome bull run) was assembled after the album was already written and arranged by the young songwriter, who has worked with classical composer Nico Muhly. The album comes together for a hearty, full-bodied emotional and enticing joyride. You can listen to the preview single “Sonsick” below via Soundcloud and check out the video here. Make sure to check them out at Le Poisson Rouge on 9/20/13. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Video: Boardwalk “I’m to Blame”

Posted on:

If you carefully observe the images in Boardwalk’s video for "I’m To Blame", you see the enchanting quality of Los Angeles – the sun-drenched hills, the balmy weather, and the flora and fauna that surrounds the outer sights of the city. But these images are transposed with a translucent purple hue, obscuring the duo as they lazily frolic and ride on swings. It seems to portray the perfect Sunday afternoon, as the swirling, low-key organ effects and gossamer guitar lines dull your senses in a narcotic state.

Lillie Ruth Bussey Opening for Mirah & Tender Forever at Golden Tea House Sept. 10

Posted on:

I miss the days when I’d come across the talented Lillie Ruth Bussey, a.k.a. Bianka Brunson, around town performing on the street, in a random art gallery or possibly even in the local Laundromat. With her artificial turf, knick knacks and musical toys surrounding her, she’d take the crowd to another world, whether it was one of complete vulnerability and isolation or a freaky deaky dance party. It’s been quite a long time since I’ve seen her moniker on a bill. Probably because according to her Facebook, she is currently making her homebase Claymont, DE, but to me, she’ll always embody that outside-the-box creative spirit that Philly’s music community possesses. Lillie Ruth Bussey will be opening for another locally bred, gifted performer, indie music darling Mirah, a.k.a. Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn, who now resides in New York City after spending many years on the Left Coast. Welcome them home again alongside Olympia, WA by way of South West France Tender Forever tonight at Golden Tea House! “An intimate and SURPRISE night of music that will hug your heart.” Golden Tea House, (Please contact jeffrey@littlebabysicecream.com for more info.), 7pm, $10, All Ages – Q.D. Free Download: “Her Majesty’s Socialist Request” (Candy Panther Remix Feat. J-Live) – rjd2

Posted on:

rjd2 is dropping his new album More Is Than Isn’t on October 8 via his own imprint Electrical Connections. We already shared with you its first single, the heavy guitar-laden "Her Majesty’s Socialist Request," earlier this summer. Now, here’s a smooth, funked-out remix from Candy Panther featuring J-Live, who manages to bring the intensity level back up to match the original. You can download it for free below, well, for the price of your email, but we all should have that outdated junk AOL or Hotmail account that only exists for these types of things. Enjoy!

Seequill releases “Social Life” EP, unveils video for “The Walls + tours

Posted on:

It’s quite rare these days to stumble upon some quality psych rock that’s truly "out there" – but in a good way. Brooklyn duo (turned quartet) Seequill has been refining the psychedelic art of being sonically unpredictable for quite some time, and kaleidoscopic single/video "The Wall" might well be the culmination of such effort.
A Morriconian musical environment brought on by Mike Gamble’s polychromatic guitars perfectly blends with the acid tone of Devin Febbroriello’s vocals, while the rythm section flows underneath like some kind of unruly stream of consiousness. The song builds to a pause that only serves as a reset button to build to a clusterfucked finale, perfectly represented in the video’s apocalyptic end.

Sequill is releasing their EP "Social Life" today, and are currently on a short Mid West tour. See them at Nublu when they return to NYC on September 15.
