FYF 2013: Glasser Live Review

Posted on:

Considering the show-stopping arrangements Cameron Mesirow, aka Glasser, has pulled off at previous festivals in recent years, it came as bit of a surprise that for her Sunday evening set she stripped her electronic pop down to the bare essentials. Comprised of little more than some samplers and a drummer/percussionist, her minimalist set up demanded she make up the difference. Luckily, with her powerful voice and charismatic presence, not mention infectious grooves, she kept the tent dancing almost the entire time. Check out the new single, "Shape," released this week off Glasser’s upcoming album.  – Chris Karman

Work Drugs just posted a new track, "Modern Living," and their signature found footage music video. It also came with a quote from Tom Wolfe (below). They’ll be performing their first all-ages show on Friday, September 27 at the First Unitarian Church.

"I think every living moment of a human being’s life, unless the person is starving or in immediate danger of death in some other way, is controlled by a concern for status."

Modern Pantheist The Spiral Electric Mamri Play Neck of the Woods TONIGHT

Posted on:

In a sudden thrust of great psych rock shows taking over the San Francisco Bay Area recently, Neck of the Woods will be showcasing three bands that will surely impress. Headlining the show while currently on tour, Modern Pantheist who possess a classic psychedelic and the oh-so-notable synths and lo-fi sound. Their track, "Lust For Hearts" even brings a nice guitar addition with tons of wah effects.

Adding on to the psych bill, Spiral Electric who’ll be bringing a much more classic rock sound to the line-up, featuring Led Zeppelin-reminiscent guitar riffs, and an overall harder sound. Their song, "Slow Burn" is a long instrumental that will get you feeling epic and pumped. Mamri, a new band that was recently formed from the two separate bands Psychic Jiu Jitsu and The Electric Magpie, have yet to release anything online and are slowly starting their debut playing live shows. They do, however, come from a background of fun choruses, a focus on musical aesthetics, and a knack for love of tea.

Make sure you make it out to the show! You won’t regret it! Victor Casillas Valle

R5’s Free Concert Series w/Pissed Jeans at Morgan’s Pier Aug. 28

Posted on:

Matt Korvette’s stage presence is probably the best thing about a Pissed Jeans show. He’ll scream in your face, kick you in the head, and wear your shoes that fell off during a stage dive. His antics may be a bit over the top to some, but to Pissed Jeans fans it’s a haven. The band’s recent LP Honeys came out in February of this year – full of loud instrumental explosions and noisy tidal waves of aggression. Tonight at Morgan’s Pier as part of R5’s free concert series, Pissed Jeans will be demonstrating why they are the most badass act to call Philly and Sub Pop home. New Track: “Vagabond Dreamer” – The Interest Group

It’s been pretty quiet in the camp of The Interest Group, except for a handful of shows lately. The song appears on the B-side of their new The Passenger 7" that is available via Stratosfear Recordings, which is based in Berlin and operated by the editors of the music blog No Fear Of Pop and the head of Oslo-based imprint Splendour Records.

Them Vibes at the Basement TONIGHT, in your living room TOMORROW

Posted on:

Them Vibes is a duo based in East Nashville that take after the tradition of the Allman Brothers and Black Crowes in creating fun, dirty, back-road rock and roll. Listen to foot-stomper “Lorelei” and a whiff of moonshine breath blown through a harmonica is almost on the air. This Thursday offers the opportunity to view an online ‘living room’ concert from the band (details here).  Impatient types can head to The Basement this Wednesday (tonight) to catch Them Vibes opening for Goodbye June. Be extra nice and they might give you a pull off the jar. -Terra James-Jura

In Memoriam: Abigail Henderson, 1977-2013

Music is an art. It’s something that needs to be tended, and the people who make it need to be cared for… The currency to building a city is investing in its artists.” —Abigail Henderson

The Kansas City music community has suffered an irreplaceable loss today with the passing of Abigail Henderson, who fought a long, courageous battle with cancer. With her husband Chris Meck, Abby co-founded Midwest Music Foundation when she was diagnosed in 2008, with the goal of providing health care assistance to musicians. Since then, MMF has given a number of grants to musicians with health emergencies. Apocalypse Meow, which began as a benefit for Abby, now benefits the musicians’ emergency health care fund and will reach its sixth year in November.

With the conviction that musical talent from the Midwest rivaled that of anywhere else in the nation, she also helped create MidCoast Takeover, a regional music showcase at SXSW that reached its fourth and most successful year this past spring. The Deli named MidCoast one of the best unofficial showcases of 2012, and approached MMF to head up a Kansas City chapter. Thus, The Deli Magazine—Kansas City was born and thrives with Abby’s goals in mind: to promote local music, foster talent, and provide a sense of community and inclusion among those who have a hand in KC music.

Abby was also frontwoman and songwriter of Tiny Horse, which began as a duo with Chris Meck and was eventually realized as five-piece band (link to video below). She was also in notable bands including Atlantic FadeoutThe Gaslights, and Trouble Junction.

I had the distinct honor and pleasure of interviewing Abby for The Deli KC last fall in preparation for Apocalypse Meow 5. If you want to know more about this amazing woman and read her words (because mine simply cannot do them justice), please click this link. And as a fellow musician/MMF staffer/friend, I want to personally thank Abby for her steadfast spirit, support, inspiration, beautiful stories and songs, friendship, and the wonderful people she’s helped bring together as a result of all those things. And I’m certain that I’m one of a multitude of individuals that share this sentiment.

To commemorate Abby, please take a moment to find out more about MMF and its mission by clicking on the image below. Donations are always appreciated and will continue to benefit the musicians’ emergency health care fund.

Thank you, Abby, for the effect you’ve had and will continue to have on the music community here. Kansas City has undeniably become a brighter, more vibrant place with you in it.

The Deli LA’s artist to watch Pink Mexico, the punk/rock garage band fronted by Robert Preston, has just released the official music video of the song Seabird, found on his recent self-titled relese. It was directed, edited, and animated by Mike Perlman, who met Preston in Boston in 2005 and have been best friends since. – Kayla Hay
