New Music Video: “Fly Your Bullshit To The Moon” – Ape School

Posted on:

Michael Johnson continues to impress with the wave of psych-pop tunes from his project Ape School while providing some seriously oddball song titles. Here’s a new music video for his track "Fly Your Bullshit To The Moon" from his latest release Quitting Time. It was produced by the rad production crew Woodshop Films, the people behind Deli fave Trippin’ Balls with Brother JT. Ape School will be opening tonight at MilkBoy Philly for buzzing Canuck rocker Mac DeMarco.

NYC Artists on the rise: Sophie Auster plays Rockwood on 09.18

Posted on:

Sophie Auster is not the kind of singer likely to come up too often. Like a cross between Fiona Apple’s righteous rage and Gillian Welch’s homespun folk yarns, her bittersweet alto’s deft sense of delivery is a shot to the skull, wrapped up in some of the most alluring, seductive torch songs you’re liable to find in the city. ‘Square Moon,’ heard on latest EP ‘Red Weather,’ packs a punch as she learns all about the trials of spending time in Paris. But she’s just as likely to deliver searing reflections on past loves (title track ‘Red Weather’), or to expose secret desires in the excellent video for ‘Run, Run, Run’ (also streaming below). See her live on September 18 at Rockwood. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

FYF 2013: Mikal Cronin Live Review

Posted on:

Pulling mostly from his power pop heavy 2013 album MCII, Mikal Cronin and his band were a high energy crowd pleaser. Although some of the prettier elements of his music were shirked in favor of providing more grit, his fantastic melodies were still front and center. Occasionally Cronin even busted out a few of his old garage rock anthems, like the exceptional “Apathy”, which were a welcomed contrast to his statelier new material. – Chris Karman

The Fantastical World of Buried Beds at JB’s Aug. 29

Posted on:

Within the next few weeks, the weather will change, schools will open, and summer will bow to fall. Knowing this may create the need to run far, far away. But there is another way to escape without resorting to exercise: Delve into the fantastical world of Buried Beds. Taking inspiration from childhood fairy tales, the group weaves these stories into song, peppering them throughout each track. Lead vocalist Eliza Jones tells such tales with striking balance and clarity. Her voice, accompanied by the rise and fall of varied instruments, drives the narrative forward. The music of each song takes on a new chapter, drawing on different instruments for the most accurate illustration. The band’s upcoming album will continue to embrace fantasy, digging even deeper into folk tales of old. Titled In Spirit, the LP doesn’t come out until September 24 via Devinyl Records, but this evening’s live appearance at Johnny Brenda’s should help to ease your craving. Headlining the bill is LA artist Chris Cohen and his contemplative take on soft rock. At times, his vocals take second stage to the music; however, his lyrics still resonate. Also set to open the night will be Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s Alec Ounsworth. While summer comes to its inescapable end, take solace in some fine tunes ready to carry you into the fall. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., $10, 9pm, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell

From the NYC’s submissions: Brooklyn Sugar Co. – live at Rockwood 2 on 09.13

Posted on:

For a band calling themselves Brooklyn Sugar Company, this group sounds like they belong in another place, in another time. Bearing the kind of blues-influenced ditties better associated with Chicago or New Orleans, and a sound that could have come from arena stadiums filled up in the ramblin’ 1970’s, the band is bringing back much needed attention to heartland roots rock, in a town not known for roots rock bands. Their latest self-titled LP takes a tour around sounds similar to Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Rick Springfield… bands of yesteryear that were just waiting to come back to life, and bringing it all to our backyard. See them when they play at Rockwood Music Hall on September 13. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Shut Up at the Family Wash 9.6 & 9.7

Posted on:

Shut Up is composed of Zach Grace (Mock Orange, Heypenny), Nathan Spear (Stackmagic) and is fronted by Megan Light. Together they crank out nineties flavored pop with Breeders-level bass with enough guitar wizardry to keep it interesting. “Valentine” is a good showcase of their hearty appreciation of the grunge age. Shut Up is playing the Family Wash Sept 6th and 7th. –Terra James-Jura

NYC bands on the rise: Hey Anna plays Bowery Electric on 09.07

Posted on:

As the summer winds down, there’s nothing like a good, clean, catchy indie pop tune to drag you back into enjoying the last sun and fun of the season. That’s what Hey Anna does. Hailing from NJ and Brooklyn, the band released in May a very solid EP titled "Pompette". Their catchy hooks are delivered by soothing female vocals, while an upbeat, edgy electric sound keeps thing moving in unexpected ways. Check out the song titled “Dance Until Three” below – you can get it here through a name-your-price system, together with the other songs on the EP, all are equally solid – and see them live when they play Bowery Electric on September 7th.  – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Sticklips’ Johanna Warren announces solo debut LP “Fates”

Posted on:

Johanna Warren is having a busy year: she’s been on the road as a singer with Iron & Wine, recorded with Natalie Merchant and Elvis Perkins, and is about to self-release her debut solo record, "Fates," a collection of nine songs recorded over the course of three days in a haunted attic in upstate New York. For the last six years Warren has fronted the band Sticklips, an experimental project drawing on the eclectic influences of its shifting personnel. The 24-year-old songwriter’s debut solo album is stripped to the bone yet full and spacious, entirely acoustic yet lush with eery ambience. Influenced heavily by the early recordings of Elliott Smith, Warren strove to create an intimate sonic universe with very sparse arrangements, relying solely on the strength of her songwriting. – (photo credit: Gretchen Heinel) – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
