Great Peacock to play The Basement 8.16

Posted on:

Great Peacock is a duo comprised of Blount Floyd and Andrew Nelson. The pair met when they were both new to Nashville, and solidified their best-friendship over a 12-pack of Busch (a frequent catalyst for greatness). From this emerged their self-titled debut EP. Its sweet, traditional folk songs are characterized by vocal harmonies the same caliber of mountain-dwelling epic as the Fleet Foxes. “Desert Lark” is the song that convinced the band that there was something special happening beyond their hobby songwriting and beer drinking. Listen for the slightest taste of ABBA’s "Fernando." Great Peacock plays The Basement August 15th. – Terra James-Jura

Video Dear Boy “Oh So Quiet”

Posted on:

Location may be a relative term, but it’s worth highlighting that Dear Boy wrote their debut EP in Vauxhall, London. They craft the kind of immaculate pop that shoots right to the heart, handled with the kind of building choruses that are pontedly precise yet playful enough to enjoy at any time of the day. Meaning: it’s subtly downcast, but also obviously cheery, and "Oh So Quiet" takes a page straight from New Order at their most streamlined, a tuneful guitar pop cut that’s performed in a warmly affective tone. Their self-titled EP will be released next month, accompanied by a residency at the Bootleg that will run until September 30th.

Brooklyn shoegazers Invisible Days release new single + video

Posted on:

With a cool, detached sound that keeps the hooks coming, Invisible Days play groovy tunes that navigate with ease through areas as diverse as shoegaze, indie pop, and even funk – this limited to the rhythm section. The band has recently resurfaced with a new 2 song single and a video for the song "Needles" – streaming below. Their smokey vocals are soothing and ecstatic, and their melodies – as British people say – are spot on. As the dog days of summer linger on, Invisible Days paradoxically provide the perfect soundtrack to that almost visible phenomenon that is the NYC heat. – Jack McGovern

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best psychedelic songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Album of the Month: Klauss “Totems”

Posted on:

From Charlottesville VA comes the alternative garage pop band Klauss who released their debut album Totems in July of 2013. Blending a variety of indie elements from acoustic to garage, each track stands on its own, and fits perfectly amongst a playlist full of Grandaddy and Neutral Milk Hotel.

One of my favorite tracks "I Shot a Deer" is a soothing guitar laden gem paired best with a beer while tubing down the Shenadoah River. Check out the entire album and maybe you’ll find the lazy summer day soundtrack that’s been missing in your life. –Dawn

This is Currin’s second musical effort, and the album is based off of the 1678 novel, The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. This new album is imaginative and potent with literary archetypes and beautiful musical concepts. Currin is already a critically acclaimed artist, and seems to have outdone himself with the interesting and well crafted collection of songs.

Tuesday Tune-Out w/Cool Points at PhilaMOCA Aug. 6

Posted on:

It’s the first Tuesday in August, which also means there will be a changing of the guard at PhilaMOCA’s Tuesday Tune-Out. This evening and for the rest of the month will be curated by Maggot House Records. Coming along for the ride tonight is a young group called Cool Points, who is led by the impressive, disenchanted vocals of Jill Mallon and only has released two tracks that remain heavy in my rotation. I’m really looking forward to hearing more in the future from these local noise-punks – hopefully sooner than later. They’ll be opening for aggressive emo outfit Bleeding Fractals. There will also be a screening of My Basement is a Shithole, a Temple University student documentary that surfaced a few months back. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $5 Donation, All Ages – Alexis V.

NYC post rockers BELLS≥ release “Solutions, Silence, or Affirmations” LP

Posted on:

BK’s post-alternative go-getters BELLS≥ have self-released a new album titled "Solutions, Silence, or Affirmations," distributed by Dischord. Each song on the record is “in constant motion,” with smooth transitions into each segment. The band’s "avant" approach in the arrangement and rhythmic department, and the ability to produce memorable and recurring guitar hooks is reminiscent of much missed post rock heroes Tortoise. Clever writing and instrumental turns make the LP sound fresh and unique – this is a well-executed follow-up to their 2010 "There Are Crashes" LP and 2011’s "Lamé" EP.Check them out at one of their upcoming shows, rumored to be both captivating and rocking. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)
