From The Deli NYC’s online submissions: Over Nights

Posted on:

Listening to lo-fi folk duo Over Nights, I’m reminded of something: I have yet to go camping this summer. This group’s lush soundscape of banjos and front porch vocal harmonies is all it takes to remind me that I should be spending the waning days of the season outdoors. Like the first track ‘Broken Cabins’ (streaming) off latest EP ‘The Broken EP,’ where singer Russel Efros discusses ghosts in the walls, and memories of the wilderness.
The group has just played their first show but promises more dates later this August. See them before the weather turrns gets cold again. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Outside Lands Festival Suggestions for Day Three – 8/9-8/11

Posted on:

Even with huge festivals like Outside Lands, there’s still a large amount of local acts that get lost in the shuffle of this fest’s rock star studded line-up’s and the immense number of bands in general. While great underground local bands may be hard to pick out, it isn’t impossible. That’s why we here at The Deli Magazine San Francisco have put together a list of the 12 bands that are currently representing and residing in the Bay Area, and are making amazing music.

Here’s our local underground choice for Day Three at the Outside Lands Festival:

Whitenoize | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 3 @ The Dome by Heineken Stage – 12 to 1:30 – Whitenoize is a house club style DJ that creates some killer remixes. Their recent remix of Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie” keeps the familiar lyrics and feel of Timberlake’s song while mixing in a hefty amount of bass and disco melodies.

Sleight of Hands | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 3 @ The Dome by Heineken Stage – 1:30 to 3 – Sleight of Hands is a classic house DJ who blends together old samples and heavy bass and drums to bring danceable club music. The track, “All Night”, features an echoed sample with repetitive synths and a heavy rhythm section – perfect to get down to.

The Easy Leaves | SONOMA COUNTY | Day 3 @ Sutro Stage – 12:00 to 12:45 – The Easy Leaves play some good old Americana music – with country-esque guitar melodies and a heavy emphasis on vocals. Their song “Get Down” breaks down in the middle with a short harmonica solo and even back-up vocals and banjo. – Victor Casillas Valle

Prowler Opening for Wild Cub at MilkBoy Philly Aug. 11

Posted on:

Tonight at Milkboy the oddball grooves of Prowler take the stage. With a combination of fragmented lyrics, gritty backend, and an electronic pulse weaved into their songs, Prowler creates an energetic and sweaty dance party. They combine tasty layers of guitars, quirky vocals, and percussion to create their unique blend of boogie-rock. “Satan don’t take no junk mail, ya heard?” Headlining the show, hailing from Nashville, is the electronic dance outfit, Wild Cub.  Also on the bill is homegrown Nashville indie-folk singer/songwriter Natalie Press. Milkboy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Outside Lands Festival Suggestions for Day Two – 8/9-8/11

Even with huge festivals like Outside Lands, there’s still a large amount of local acts that get lost in the shuffle of this fest’s rock star studded line-up’s and the immense number of bands in general. While great underground local bands may be hard to pick out, it isn’t impossible. That’s why we here at The Deli Magazine San Francisco have put together a list of the 12 bands that are currently representing and residing in the Bay Area, and are making amazing music.

Here’s our local underground choice for Day Two at the Outside Lands Festival:

Social Studies | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 2 @ Twin Peaks Stage – 12:45 to 1:25 – Social Studies is a band with a blend of 60s flower pop type sound with strong vocals. Their most recent Daytrotter session of their song “Live For Today” features a catchy sound with enough vocal power from Natalia Rogovin to mesmerize you throughout their performance.

The Mother Hips | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 2 @ Panhandle Stage – 6:05 to 6:50 – The Mother Hips have a psychedelic garage type sound (although a little more rock n’ roll than anything) with just enough melody to differentiate from the large amounts of lo-fi acts that have been showing up within the last couple of years. They just released their album, “Behind Beyond”, which features the track “Jefferson Army”, which has a slow beginning with a perfectly executed build into their signature psychedelic rock n’ roll sound. Electric guitar riffs and all.

Dub Gabriel | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 2 @ The Dome by Heineken Stage – 12 to 1:30 – Dub Gabriel creates a balanced ground between reggae vocals and sounds with heavy dubstep beats and rhythm. His most recent release titled “Raggabass Resistance” blends heavy reggae vocals with a large amount of synth, drums, and bass.

The Soft White Sixties | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 2 @ Land’s End Stage – 1:00 to 1:50 – The Soft White Sixties have a rock n’ roll feel that features distorted bass, heavy guitar licks, and even vocals with heavy effects. Their song, “Queen of the Press Club”, has a classic rock feel – with shredding guitars and heavy distortion everywhere. And I mean everywhere.

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 2 @ Sutro Stage – 4:40 to 5:30 – Thao and the Get Down Stay Down has a familiar indie rock sound with distinct vocals provided by lead singer Thao Nguyen. Their song, “We The Common (For Valerie Bolden)” features a banjo riff, a bumping rhythm section, and even refined back-up vocals. – Victor Casillas Valle

Johnny Showcase – the Cure for Your Funk at JB’s Aug. 10

Posted on:

One week in Philly, one week of sun then right back to unpredictable rainfall – it’s enough to put anyone into a vitamin-D deprived funk, and the only way to counteract one of such magnitude is to double the dosage. Specifically, with the brand of mirror-ball funk and blues that Johnny Showcase has honed during his tenure in the local music scene. Coupling the seduction of 70s-era soul with witty lyricism, Johnny and his band of disco gypsies prove that seriously good music doesn’t have to take itself too seriously. David Sweeny, the man behind the leisure-suited alter ego, and his commitment to the character transform the stage into a cabaret. Also on the bill is New York’s, Mother Feather, which is self-described as “cock-rock” fronted by 100% woman, Ann Courtney. Both bands have powerful characters at their helm – powerful enough to banish any rainy-day funk (unfortunately, their talents don’t extend to the weather itself). Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., $12-$14, 9pm, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell
