BASECAMP single “Emmanuel”

Posted on:

BASECAMP is collaboration between 3 Nashville producers bent on pushing the genre envelope. “Emmanuel” is a perfect representation of their combined capabilities. It’s experimental R&B; the smooth, soulful vocals are there, but so are meticulously-crafted beats that sound clean at first, but gradually reveal lush stratums deeper in the track. It’s a raw, tense song, and makes me curious to hear how the other three tracks of their upcoming EP emerge from their laboratory.

Artist to Watch: Skeltons

Posted on:

There isn’t much known about the newly formed duo, Skeltons. From the looks of their facebook page, co-founders, Alex Rogers (drums, vocals), and Lindsey Schiffman (guitar, vocals), have been recording and playing shows around LA for less than a year. “Lights Off,” is the first song they released off their debut EP. The deliciously carefree guitar riff and the youthful shout-singing during the chorus make this a stand-out track. The song’s overall quirky pop moments – hand claps, male/female harmonies – are just another strand in the fabric of their sound, woven together with bits of laxadaisical garage rock, millennial indie rock a la Eels, and that bourgeoning indie arena rock energy. While the rough edges are still visible, there are moments in each song on their debut EP that jump out and surprise your ears. – Jacqueline Caruso

The Shape Hungry Skinny Surgeon Generals Scissors For Lefty at the Monarch TONIGHT – 8/14

Posted on:

Tonight, the Monarch in San Francisco will be hosting a night showcasing four must see indie rock bands from the ay area . The Shape, who has just released out with their “Into Trenches” in April, has a heavy melodic sound that features a head-bobbing rhythm section, dreamy guitar riffs for the majority of their songs and minimal dazed out vocals. Hungry Skinny brings great rock and roll riffs, Iggy Pop punk style vocals and groovy choruses to the overall poppy line-up, creating a little more flavor for the night’s line up. The Surgeon Generals, who have also just released their second single “Deadwave” from of their forthcoming album, feature tons of distortion, echoed vocals and catchy choruses. And Scissors For Lefty, with a sound reminiscent of The Strokes with more synths and a poppy feel, takes on a more classic early 2000’s indie sound.

Be sure to head out tonight for some good dancing and sing-a-long tunes! – Victor Casillas Valle

Lithuania Reunite & Still Feeling Oh So Good at KFN Aug. 14

Posted on:

Multi-instrumentalist Eric Slick continues to remain one of the most prolific musicians in our music community. The body of work that he has amassed over the past few years with Dr. Dog as well as his collaborative and solo efforts is rather mind-boggling. Well, this evening, he’ll be teaming up with old pal/bandmate Dominic Angelella (of DRGN KING), another tireless Philly musician, and dusting off some old garage-pop tunes that they created together as the band Lithuania. After revisiting their 2010 EP Heavy Hands, the songs have definitely withstood the test of time. Have they written any new ones together? I guess that you’ll have to swing by Kung Fu Necktie tonight and find out what the band of "local weirdos" have been up to lately. Don’t worry – it will still feel oh so good. NYC Punk is alive: Big Ups announce album + play Ripper’s on 08.17

Posted on:

The NYC quartet Big Ups (a band we saw almost set Spike Hill on fire during our B.E.A.F. 2012) just dropped the first single titled ‘Goes Black,’ a spoken and screaming ode to… self-reflection, off their upcoming debut LP, "Eighteen Hours of Static," which confirms this is a heck of a punk band. The album title is derived from Carl Sagan’s novel "Contact," and the lyrics seem to focus on truth, faith and science. The song, which premiered on Pitchfork, has the hardcore vibe of Black Flag and Kill Your Idols, fused with melodic post-punk and indie rock verses, and a chorus reminiscent of INDK. The full LP is due out on October 8th via Dead Labour. Check them out this Saturday, 8/17 in Queens at Ripper’s with Sleepies, Eula, Low Fat Getting High and Shark? – awesome bill! – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Pop Soul band The Dirty Gems plays The Knit on August 26

Posted on:

Long Island based at one time, now Brooklyn based The Dirty Gems just released a clean cut new EP “Vujà Dé,” which showcases a wide range, featuring tracks flirting with arena rock grandiosity (the sinister anti-love anthem ‘Nasty’) and more chilled and soulful ballads (‘I Don’t Wanna Die’ and ‘Automatic Heart’). The Soul Pop outfit puts on one hell of a live show too, with an on stage chemistry that only comes from musicians with years of experience playing together. See them Brooklyn band when they play Knitting Factory on Aug 26th. – Paul Jordan Talbot
