Brooklyn shoegazers Suā play Glasslands on 08.25

Posted on:

With the recent release of their latest EP "Twins," New York City’s Sua adds fresh ideas to the dreamgaze sound while never straying too far from that genre’s ultimate appeal. The title track (streaming) comes initially powered by bended guitars over fluid drumming, while female lead vocals occupy a tonal quality and presentation that lands somewhere between The Cocteau Twins and Asobi Seksu. At nearly 6 minutes in length, there’s more than enough room for multiple soft vocal passages, forceful guitar explosions, a uniquely placed minor chord as well as a stereo field panning psyched-out coda. “All You Have” shuffles along a brightly percussive pattern as multiple layers of guitars create alternately pitched sonic walls around Suki Kwan’s seductively sweet vocals. “Beach 90” celebrates those “summer days in the rockaways” with light near-jazzy vocals, while guitars played by overt disciples of Kevin Shields deliver alternately measured skewer and punch. “Welcome” juxtaposes casual, airy vocals against a busy rhythm section and angular time changes for an auspicious result. Check them out live on August 25 at Glasslands. – Dave Cromwell

Night Market and ART/GAGE w/Strand of Oaks, Norwegian Arms, Night Panther & Circadian Rhythms at 9th & South Sts. Aug 15

Posted on:

South Street comes alive tonight with food, art, music, culture, and more as it pays host to both Night Market and ART/GAGE. The Food Trust will have its usual barrage of nearly 80 food trucks descending upon the iconic strip for what is guaranteed to be the largest edition of this culinary event yet. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens and a number of other art collectives and galleries will provide a plentiful showcase of local artists during ART/GAGE. But of course, both events converging upon the same area wouldn’t be complete without a carnival of circus performers and local musicians to provide some enlightening entertainment. The 9th Street stage starts off strong with the vibrant, throwback indie pop tunes of Circadian Rhythms, and is followed up by the soulful, sex pop vibrations of Drink Up Buttercup/White Birds alums Night Panther. Add in the impassioned weirdo-folk of Norwegian Arms and a headlining set from buzz-worthy folk maestro Strand of Oaks, and you have an evening of music that is not to be missed – seriously! The Lower 48 Record Release Party at Doug Fir 8.16

Posted on:

Portland’s energetic folk rockers, The Lower 48, have developed their sound into vintage rock and roll with soul and have a new album to prove it. Drawing away from laid-back acoustic songs, the band has taken on a ’60s pop twist (somewhere along the lines of Buddy Holly and the Rolling Stones) and kept the harmonious vocal lining that places The Lower 48 on top of the curve in this city’s scene. Aside from a premier sound, they know stage performance well. All three members of the band move around, trade instruments, and the drummer has even been known to stand up and blow on the trumpet. The new album was released in stores this past Tuesday and the party for the album is at the Doug Fir on Friday. The Doug Fir is full of 60s aroma and tomorrow night will be no exception as bluesy rockers Tango Alpha Tango are on the bill as well. – Colin Hudson

The Christmas Bride

Posted on:

The local cassette label Teen River has released their first cassingle and they could not have picked a better song. The Christmas Bride’s tongue-in-cheek lo-fi classic "(He’s Not a) Mongreloid" is perfect cassingle fodder. The b-side, "D.I.Y. Hi-Skool" is equally great.

You can catch The Christmas Bride on August 23rd at Wally World with Baby Sitter, Big Waves of Pretty, WAD, and Foul Tip.

NYC songwriter Wharfer announces debut LP “The Rattling”

Posted on:

Alt-folk singer Wharfer, a man used to existing in life’s out-of-the-way locations, is about to release his debut solo recording ‘The Rattling’ on August 27, and the album echoes his calling towards life’s long list of forgotten spaces. Hailing from Scranton, and more recently serving time in Brooklyn’s infamous Death By Audio scene, singer-songwriter Kyle Wall has the scratchy, lived-through-this pipes of the late, great Jason Molina, displayed in late-night acoustic sessions like his tracks ‘railroads (i wrote of),’ and the haunting ‘Architect.’ Wistful and reflective, this is the album you’ve been hearing in your dreams. See him live as he promises new shows soon. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Mt. Bearington Continues to Build Impressive Fanbase

Do the bands Deerhoof, Man Man, Peter Bjorn and John, or Of Montreal ring any bells? Connecticut natives Mt. Bearington has opened for all of them in their two-year reigh over the local scene, impressing with most recent release Love Buttons. They’ve toured the country including a small SXSW show but have recently been sticking to their area with gigs in Bridgeport, Hartford, New London, and Meriden, with a Hamden date coming up at the Outer Space on September 7th. A dreamy, shoegaze-y sound that jumps out especially in tracks like "Here’s Your Mood Ring, Honey" and "Pictures", Mt. Bearington channel some hippie vibes and garage fuzz to create the sound that’s going to make them big.
