Obits unveils “Taste the Diff” from upcoming album “Beds & Bugs”

Posted on:

May God preserve veteran garage rockers Obits, one of the living proofs that NYC still rules when it comes to rock’n’roll. The band is set to release their third LP titled “Beds & Bugs” this September. In anticipation of this, the band has unveiled the forthcoming album’s first track titled “Taste the Diff”. Rick Froberg (of former Hot Snakes) nails the vocals with a raspy/punk/in-your-face attitude and sound that will make true rockers want to put the track in perennial loop mode – since it only lasts around 2:20… or does it? The song was featured on Stereogum and you can listen to it below! – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Alt Rock songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

New Video: “Sister Cities” (Shaking Through) – Hop Along

Posted on:

Sorry if we are slow on the draw with this, but last night, we found this video for Hop Along‘s new track "Sister Cities" from their Shaking Through episode via YouTube. (BTW: We know that Vimeo is Shaking Through‘s preferred video site to use, but we really can’t stand how long it takes for their videos to load up. Anyone else feelin’ us?) What caught our attention is that the Shaking Through crew tracked the song with footage from the session to make a music video, which was the first time we’d ever seen them do that with one of their featured artists. We’re more used to their videos containing part of the song from during recording and mostly interview segments. Twas a nice surprise – enjoy!

Artist to Watch: Flaamingos

Posted on:

The term post-punk gets thrown around when bands decide to emphasize a bleak, austere expression amidst grooves that are hard to shake. It’s a blanket term to describe a sound that’s brimming with possibilities. Echo Park’s Flaamingos are almost a reincarnated form of many of that era’s perennial influences, exploring its jagged rhythms and obscure vocal abrasions with a naturality that’s never forced or overly academic. Their latest reveal off their upcoming debut certainly attests to that fact – enveloped in a wash of vaporous synths and arresting bass lines, "Walk a Wire" is driven by a danceable beat that never wavers or dims, made the more urgent with Jerry Narrow’s breathy vocal stylings and Daniel Koontz’s clean, wistful guitars. The tinny drum machine and undeviating tempo is certainly evocative of Factory Records staples the Wake, which is certainly not a comparison to scoff at. Flaamingos currently don’t have a set gig, but something is sure to turn up once they release their self-titled on August 27th.

Ladymob Will Play TT the Bear’s Next Wednesday

Posted on:

Ladymob is anything but—consisting of singular lead lady singer Shannon Reynolds, the remaining members are all packed with testosterone (guitarist Joe Diaz, drummer Brian Becker, and bassist Matthew Paul McCarron) and are far more likely to draw a mob of ladies than be one. Though they’re less than a year into the scene after forming last October, the group has already built buzz with a series of released tracks including official single “The Ladder” as well as bonuses “Blackout” and “Regret”. The aesthetic is a little deceptive and it’s easy to jump to a goth rock conclusion, but give them a listen for a sound reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac from the vocals to the extended guitar riffs. This is a new sound for the underground Boston scene that’ll be on display at TT’s in Cambridge a week from Wednesday, and it shows nothing but promise. –Jamie Loftus

The Interest Group Opening for Burnt Ones at KFN July 2

Posted on:

While their musical output may not be on par to what you may like, you can still hear the dreamy tunes of The Interest Group tonight when they perform live at Kung Fu Necktie opening for Burger Records’ Burnt Ones. The local five-piece travel through music history with paisley-shaded sunglasses pulling inspiration from 60’s psych-pop featuring languid boy-and-girl vocals. When we caught them the last time at PhilaMOCA opening for Parenthetical Girls and The So So Glos, founding member Marissa Lesnick had already left the group, and was replaced by May Cote. However, on the band’s Facebook and Soundcloud pages, Lesnick is still credited as being part of the ensemble though that information differs from their Bandcamp. This past spring, The Interest Group did mention that they were working on about twelve tracks for their debut LP. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it won’t be another case of a local act releasing an album and then breaking up. Well, if your head is already on vacation this week, it shouldn’t hurt to start your Fourth of July festivities early this evening. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Ambient lo fi folk from Nashville: Elk

Posted on:

Elk’s premiere EP “Cocoon” is intimate to say the least. Sounding more like bedroom demos rather than fully produced songs, their tracks manage to capture something nostalgic and inviting that many bands tend to loose in the recording studio. With a track like “Trails”, Elk shows us how lo fi and desserty that they can get, creating what can only be described as a wild west show down put to music. Oher tunes like “Mother Earth” display a dreamier side to them, revealing at times a noisier side reminiscent of The Flaming Lips. These ambient lo fi folk rockers are really on to something and we are really looking forward to hearing a full length in the future. – Sam Kogon (@samkogon)

Infinity Shred announces album ‘Sanctuary’ + play Glasslands on 08.03

Posted on:

Can music change our body’s perception of temperature? Probably not, but NYC’s Infinity Shred (once known as Starscream) gets very close to accomplishing that with their space-synth jams, which wrap the listener in several cold (and cool) layers of glacial synths. We don’t need bloody "warm" recordings in July, give us AC in the headphones!

Infinity Shed will be releaseing their sophonore full length ‘Sanctuary’ in September via OK Go’s label Parachute – check out the video of preview single ‘Void Ripper’ below, and see them at Glasslands on August 3 with The Depreciation Guild.

Electro-Pop from NYC: Wolf Colony

Posted on:

A dreamer from Miami, Wolf Colony creates intimate, hopelessly romantic confessionals set to heated dance floor journeys. From the boy-meets-world wonder of ‘Youth,’ to the yearning expressed in ‘Calling,’ singer-songwriter Seventhleopard and music producer Neal Sarin throw all their anxieties and confusions into picture perfect dreams that touch the dance floor and lift their situations up to the heavens. Especially fave track ‘Beauty,’ that’s sure to break a heart or two. Check it out below and see the duo when they head back to NY later this year. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Sheron celebrates EP release at Rockwood on July 07

Posted on:

Sheron is the solo project of Modern Rivals’ bassist Andrew Sheron, and – at least from the preview track ‘Keyser Söze,’ streaming below – it sounds nothing like that band. The instrumentiation alone – featuring an oud, an octave violin, the coke box guitar, tuvan throat singing, a grand piano, and at least half a dozen voices in harmony – speaks volumes of what you can expect from this project. The single blends a rather cerebral Western songwriting style with exotic sounds and arcane sounding arrangements, developing from a verse as intimate as a whisper to a tense finale with tribal percussions and throat singing. The result is a track that sounds at once existentialist and mystical. Check Sheron out at their EP release party at Rockwood on July 7 – a full length is in the works for later this year.
