Chill-tronica from Brooklyn: Pajama People

Posted on:

Though they might not have to get out of their pajamas to write their groovy, level-headed music, Pajama People sound very awake. The group synthesizes (literally and figuratively) chillwave and more pyschedelic influences into a smooth sound that will leave with you no choice but to bust a move. Think Wild Nothing meets Washed Out meets Air meets a bunch of old disco records. – Jack McGovern

This band submitted their music for coverage here.

The Cultured to Open for Shwayze at THE MET in Pawtucket This August

Posted on:

Hailing from Brockton, MA, The Cultured met in high school and began creating some of the best sometimes indie, sometimes reggae inspired rock in New England, and after three years touring the Boston circuit have landed an opening gig for Shwayze in Rhode Island next month. This comes after the release of one full-length album on S.H.O.P. Records in 2012 and in the midst of their new single "Revelation"’s buzz, leaving the four-piece band poised for huge success before a sophomore release. There’s no doubt thatthe Shwayze show is only the beginning for The Cultured, so scramble to check them out while they’re still playing smaller venues before they become the new big thing. –Jamie Loftus

Be Svelte w/Brother JT at JB’s July 6

Posted on:

Johnny Brenda’s welcomes the whimsically warped psychedelic exploits of Brother JT (a.k.a. John Telesky) this evening supporting his latest release The Svelteness of Boogietude. A indie music vet and Renaissance man as the humorous host of web show “Trippin’ Balls,” Brother JT offers delightful tunes with a twisted edge that takes slightly odd routes and often lapsing elongated guitar runs, but never really fall off course. Adding to the revelry, former Philly native Art DiFuria has made a sojourn from the south as Photon Band, who will be celebrating the release of their 7th album, Pure Photonic Matter (Volume 1). Take advantage of a rare opportunity to rock out with these classic acts while also embracing their new material. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Weekly Feature: Streets of Laredo

Posted on:

Kiwi transplants Streets of Laredo was one of the highlight of our B.E.A.F. 2013 Alt Folk Stage in early June – they packed Spike Hill and put up a truly entertaining show. The trio flew back to their home country earlier this year to finalize a full length album we are looking forward to listening to. While waiting, enjoy once again their single from last year ‘Girlfriend’ (streaming below) and this recent Mike Levine’s interview with the band here.

Salt Cathedral releases preview single “Move Along” + announces EP release

Posted on:

NYC avant-pop band Salt Cathedral (previously known as Il Albanico) just divulged the single "Move Along" (streaming below) from the upcoming self titled EP, scheduled for a July 30 release. Incorporating influences as disparate as dub and jungle in a song that sounds like pop but (unlike all pop tunes) doesn’t resolve, the track features sparser and more peculiar arrangements compared to the musicians’ previous incarnation, leaving a lot of space for Juliana Ronderos’ vocals to shine.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

From The Deli NYC’s online music submissions: Tim Garrigan

Posted on:

Wandering around New York City and feeling lost is a recurring theme that permeates all sorts of depictions of the city. Despite the fact that you’re surrounded by millions of people, you feel lonely, and so on. But notwithstanding the slightly conventional subject – and a sound that often betrays a passion for Bob Dylan – Tim Garrigan displays those desperate, lost feelings with courage and a remarkable ability to convey a wide range of emotions, showing that the archetype of the lonely city dweller, when rendered with depth and complexity, can still be a well of lyrical inspiration. – Jack McGovern

Weekend Warrior, July 5 – 7

Posted on:

Tonight proto-punk trio Lantern will be celebrating the release of their first full-length album Rock ‘N’ Roll Rorschach, whose title was inspired by the vigilante character from Alan Moore’s graphic novel, Watchmen. The LP officially comes out this Tuesday, July 9 via Louisville indie label Sophomore Lounge, but you’ll be able to grab your vinyl copy this evening at Johnny Brenda’s. Led by the raunchy, searing guitar work of Zachary Fairbrother with its backbone held together by bassist Emily Robb and new(ish) drummer Christian Simmons, Lantern will live up to their name as a beacon of light for rock ‘n’ roll lovers by setting the stage ablaze. You should expect saxophonist David Fishkin (Extreme Fishkin) adding plenty of sonic blasts to their set. They’ll also be joined on the bill by Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band, who are freshly off their residency at Ortlieb’s so I have no doubt that their jams will be tight, and Ivory Tuskk, the project from The War on Drugs’ Robbie Bennett. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.
