Fax Holiday Coming to O’Briens in Allston July 11th

Posted on:

I initially discovered Fax Holiday last week when I saw them open during the Bunny’s A Swine show last week. After their set I approached singer Eric Schermerhorn and he handed me what I would call, for lack of a better phrase, a “Fax Holiday Greatest Hits” cd. Since the band does not have a new full-length (their last was recorded in 2011), the disk he gave me had a smattering of old stuff and a couple more-recent tracks (from 2012, all of which can be found on their bandcamp site.)

I’m really into what these guys are doing. As mentioned in the Bunny is a Swine review, the autoharp Schermerhorn plays is awesome. It adds this trippy, eerie sort of sounds to the already lo-fi recordings. One of the newer tracks “Lots of Glass”, makes excellent use of the electric autoharp. The whole track sounds like Doug Martsch of Built to Spill died, came back as a ghost, and held a concert in an abandoned mansion–yeah, I think it sounds pretty cool, too.

“Chameleon” (from their record, Rope and Wine) is another track full of ethereal, ghostly qualities. From the somber chord progression, to the spacey leads and mournful refrain of “Hey, no need to be so upset”, it’s difficult not to become immersed in this song.

Fax Holiday will be playing O’Brien’s in Allston on July 11. Check their Facebook for more details. –Dan McMahon

Super Thief, Show @ Mohawk, 7/9/13

Posted on:

Super Thief released their first EP last January entitled Two for No. Be prepared for a twisty journey through of a spectrum of soundwaves. It’s four tracks exploding with rock, punk and some long instrumental breaks that show off their skills; heavy one song, soft and lyrical the next.

They note some of their influences as LCD soundsystem, The Pixies, and The Jesus Lizard, which makes for their combo as a self-described "rock-indie-post/punk-something-or-other band". You are sure to hear something that will appeal to your musical palette. Check them out for yourself tonight at The Mohawk. A 6 dollar show, doors open at 9pm. –Written by Courtney Pierce

Bearstronaut to Perform for Major Boston Festivals

Posted on:

Lowell-born, Boston-bred band Bearstronaut has been active in the national indie community for over two years now, and it’s high time their pop-electro sound is finally being lauded as it should. The group is slotted to perform on main stages for both the ambitious nine-day Outside the Box Festival, making its inaugural effort this year, at the City Hall Plaza mainstage next Thursday, then in the same location in September for the Boston Calling festival’s second effort of the calendar year. This is a long time coming for the group, which started downtown with EP Satisfied Violence in 2010, owned every party they attended and eventually released Paradice, a full-length album in late 2012. They’ve toured the circuit heavily developing a dance sound you can fall in love with without feeling guilty, and it’s high time out feel in love– they’ll be plating the Allston-Cambridge circuit in addition to the free OtB show next week, so catch them before they catch the hearts of Boston Calling! You’ll certainly be glad you did.

Another great Brooklyn band coming out of nowhere: Oh My Goodness

Posted on:

We are not entirely sure where these Oh My Goodness guys popped out from – ok, Brooklyn, but… well, we weren’t aware of them, and this song/video combo streaming below is pretty impressive. The product of two multi-instrumentalists/producers originally from Maine, the band mixes funk, pop and soul with what we call "avant-indie" elements (i.e. creative, electronic production techniques) to forge a sound that’s as unique as it is edgy. The song is included in a self titled EP released in late May 2013. I think we’ll be there next time they play live – only problem, it doesn’t look like they have a show scheduled right now.

Andrew Cedermark streams new album on NPR + plays Shea Stadium on 07.11

Posted on:

Ex Titus Andronicus guitarist Andrew Cedermark has recently released his second solo album, which is currently available for streaming on NPR. Set in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, the record develops along a pensive pace and an electric, at times even dissonant, folk sound, and deals with coming of age – in particular realizing that growing up happens, even if you don’t really want it to. You can see Andrew Cedermark live at Shea Stadium on July 7.

The Young Things play Bowery Electric on July 18

Posted on:

In a city with buzz bands aplenty, The Young Things have found a way to stand out. Fresh off a tour with Har Mar Superstar and a run at Brooklyn’s Northside Festival, they play rockn’nroll with an old-school mindset but modern tendencies. Now they’ve got a full-length under their belts, called “Hello Love//Goodbye Sexual,” which was released aa few weeks ago via Battle Worldwide (Frenchkiss Label Group). It might be the answer the city’s been needing to the increasingly heady indie of yesteryear. Although still young (things), they’re mainstays around these parts, so check them out when they play Bowery Electric on July 18, and listen to this Beatlesesque rock’n’roller called ‘Hello Love’ from their latest album. – Zack Karimer

New Univox LP Available for Streaming & Purchase + Free Video Game App

Posted on:

If you were wondering why Univox has been so silent lately, then check out the new album that they just dropped earlier today entitled The Altec. The guys recorded the LP in the new studio that they built in the basement of guitarist/vocalist Josh Jones’ home with his wife Sarah. The record was mixed by Night Panther‘s Farzad Houshiarnejad. Univox also created a video game app called Tour of Fire, which is not all that surprising given Jones’ addiction to playing them. You can download the app for free HERE. Enjoy!

NYC bands on the rise: Modern Merchant, live at Bowery Electric on 07.17

Posted on:

For any fan of the dream pop of Local Natives and Caveman, Modern Merchant brings the best of those bands’ harmonic bliss to a carefully composed new EP, ‘For The Fields.’

From weighty topics of marriage (‘Marry Me Annie’), to the gentle crashing of the waves in the partially intimate/partially epic ‘Necessary Evil,’ the band’s sweeping harmonies and dreamy guitar lines cast a meditative spell that will linger for hours after a listen. The band takes a simple approach to tugging at the heartstrings, and is all the more effective at it for playing it that way. See them live when they play Bowery Electric on July 17. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

This band submitted their music for coverage here. We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Batty Keeping Anchored at The Mitten July 8

Posted on:

Batty is a fledgling punk outfit hailing form West Philly/New Jersey that appears to still be evolving into their own. From their “shitty home recordings for reference,” you can hear angsty guitar riffs accompanied by primal trashcan beats and blown-out vocals. However, with their most recent live offering, “livin’ a lie,” which was posted to the group’s Bandcamp and recorded on May 15, 2013 at WKDU, the band demonstrates a more patient sound that is anchored by dark, heavy sludge-metal guitar work that journeys through the realm of psych rock. Batty participated in this year’s resuscitated Ladyfest Philly, and you can catch them tonight at West Philly DIY space The Mitten where they’ll be sharing the bill with South Carolina’s Chemical Peel (Ride the Snake Records) and local Goth punks Teenage Priests. The Mitten, (For more info, contact grace.ambrose@gmail.com.), 7pm, All Ages – Alexis V.
