Lunch Release New Cassette, “Quinn Touched the Sun”
Lunch play with a complete loss of inhibition that’s captured perfectly by latest cassette, Quinn Touched the Sun. Unbridled energy sweeps through their lo-fi recordings; dominated by fuzzy guitar riffs, chugging bass, pulsing drums and anarchic vocal shouts. It’s honest garage rock with a punk edge, complimented by noise-pop undertones that can keep a room moving with short, explosive songs. The group is about to depart on a west coast tour but keep an eye on their facebook page to hear about their homecoming and any future Portland shows. This kind of music is best experienced in person. – Benjamin Toledo
Celebrate Creepoid Not Dying on Tour at JB’s July 12
Philly psych titans, memorable for fuzzed-out cuts like “See Through” and “Grave Blanket,” mark their return from tour with an appropriately anticipated set at Johnny Brenda’s. Purveyors of moody soundscapes, local natives Creepoid continue to expand on their distinctively earnest brand of lo-fi. Articulate riffs and emotive lyricism embodied by deliberate diction makes for monumental anthems that play out hypnotic like shoegaze fever dreams. Humming with melancholy and shades of lethargic optimism, Creepoid’s strength lies in their ability to conjure bittersweet narratives by way of haunting chants (think “Spirit Birds”) that bloom then unapologetically burst into instrumentation that seamlessly nears cinematic. Exemplified by Yellow Life Giver and Horse Heaven, Creepoid’s capacity for crafting impressive tracks is boundless. With fans ravenous for new material, the band’s follow-up release is surely highly anticipated. Equally haunting in their own right, fellow Philly four-piece Dreambook are set to finally party down in honor of releasing their debut album, Only Shadows, by prefacing Creepoid along with indie-pop mavens Amanda X. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave, 9pm, $10, 21+ – Dianca Potts
SandCastle Opening for Laser Background at KFN July 12
As the eerily grey clouds cast an ominous outlook on today’s tone. They also serve as an excellent predictor of this evening’s events at KFN, where a pair of devious, dark yet melodic musical creations is set to hit the stage. SandCastle takes their low-fi creepy vocal exterior and uses it to provide a fresh cover over a folky melodic core. This layered concept reaches out into a new frontier when energetic, spacey electronics are utilized allowing songs to branch out into unfound territory. They will be opening for Andy Moholt’s deliciously twisted psych-pop concoction created with his band Laser Background. Their tunes hover over the threshold between carnivalistic deviousness and crystalized melodic pop. It’s an early show so hit happy hour and then head on over. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 7pm, $8, 21+ – Michael Colavita
Cold Country “Missing The Muse”
Sean McConnell (aka Cold Country) has been prolific as of late, releasing 3 albums in that last three months. The June release, Missing The Muse, was the first with a full band. The flushed out lo-fi folk sound of the ep is compelling, and McConnell is currently working on the follow-up as an artist-in-residence at Hill House in East Jordan, Michigan.
Cold Country will be hitting the road next month and are planning a Daytrotter debut in September. Big things to come from McConnell and Cold Country.
Tiny Hearts Tape Release at Langano Lounge 7.12
"Dreams, Big Feelings and Classic Sounds" summarize Tiny Hearts, the latest incarnation from former Paschal Couer leader Dani Fish. Creatively versatile, she set no limits on the Nuthin’ Fits EP which she recorded in her own studio, Sister Secrets. Fish’s songwriting details feelings of apprehension and languid, surf days with mean guitar riffs on "Christine’s Van", while "Going St. House" is a sensitive composition with harmonies cooing over doo-wop rhythms. Additionally there is a pouty, french-tinged dance track called "Set Higher", a collaboration with a Lady Vagenius. The release of their cassette at Langano Lounge goes down with Alex Boyce (who remixed the B-side), Sisterbrittaney, Havania Whaal, and The Mishaps. It is also rumored to be Dani Fish’s birthday bash, so make sure to participate in the sing-along portion of the show. – Brandy Crowe

Zulus debuts (evil) video + plays Death By Audio on 07.13
Many people are annoyed by frowns, or they just can’t tolerate negativity altogether in any form, art included. But art has never been only about positive feelings and harmonious balance – as a matter of fact, some of the most compelling works of art are incredibly negative and irrational: a comedy might make you laugh, a love story might move you, but a tragedy can tear you to frigging pieces.
Tearing listeners to pieces is high on the priority list of NYC’s Zulus, a band keeping NYC’s glorious Noise Rock and No Wave torches burning. Their new video for the single "Kisses" (streaming below) is a merciless exercise in sonic and visual insanity. But art can make even the most terrible feelings sublime so… if you don’t get it, it may be your loss in the end.
See Zulus live at Death By Audio with as noisy and as Brooklyn based pals YVETTE on July 13.
Strict Agnostics Feature Members of Nice Guys and Miami Doritos
It’a happened, y’all– the Boston music scene has begun swapping partners like sorority girls, but it’s in a good way. Nice Guys members Jake Gilbertson (guitar/vocals) and Cam Smith (drums) and Miami Doritos’ Kurt Egghart (Bass/Vocals) have released a new album under the name Strict Agnostics, recorded just this month. Though both source bands have steady touring schedules in Boston and are gradually breaking into underground markets across the country, Strict Agnostics are very much in the process of getting their EP (choose your price!) out to their existing fans before starting to play shows. With track titles like "Bob Dylan’s Used Condom" and "I Want to Be A Sociopath", the Strict Agnostics is equal parts garage and weird, so snag it before your friends figure out the hype.

M.H. & His Orchestra Video “Washington DC”
Have you seen the latest visual installment from DC’s own avant-orchestral artist M.H. & His Orchestra yet? The video for "Washington DC" premiered July 2, and needs to be seen & heard. Here M.H takes to the streets all the while singing "there will be no more dancing in the street," though it totally inspires me to just jaywalk my ass off around McPherson Square. Awesome stuff, check it out below. –Dawn
