Boston Fuzzfest Hit Central Square in Cambridge This August

Posted on:

New England noise rock paradise this summer is as close as Central Square in Cambridge with Boston Fuzzfest’s lineup sporting a lineup of Ghost Box Orchestra, The New Highway Hymnal, Nice Guys, CreaturoS, Guillermo Sexo, The Fagettes, DOZE, and Moniker. For only ten bucks at the Middle East Downstairs, Fuzzfest is a solid stand-in for Somerville’s Deep Heaven Now Festival (not taking place this year), and this year’s show will potentially dictate whether the fest will expand in 2014. From garage to indie to punk and all things fuzz, there’s something for everyone, and it’ll be interesting to see how Fuzzfest paces eight bands in one night. You’ll never know unless you’re there, right?

Manic Electronica from DJ A Village Raid

Posted on:

Since his move to Brooklyn, Danny Taylor (aka “A Village Raid”) has been establishing himself as a solid backbeat to the rhythm of the night. Known for his steady appearances at several BK indie venues, and the ensuing packed dancefloors, Danny offers more than effortless mixes and indulgent selects. A visit to his soundcloud page is a glimpse into the lush compositions of his restless mind. Ethereal soundscapes and ambient percussion give his hour-long mixes a vibrancy that keep your ears at attention. Each mix is an album unto itself. In addition, his production offers a dynamic vacillation of tone and energy; his cinematic scores are journeys into long-untapped emotions. Tune in and get raided. – BrokeMC

Slick plays Stone Fox on 07.25

Posted on:

Slick is a Nashville foursome that identifies as more of a “gang” rather than “band.” They share an affinity for glam rock and The Stooges, and have weathered members moving to New York and back again. They also put on an amazing live show. The opportunity to see them doing what they do best is on Thursday, July 25th at the Stone Fox, when they open for the Blackfoot Gypsies and The Ghost Wolves. Wet your whistle for that evening here, and make sure you reclaim your girlfriend’s panties from their glove compartment before you leave. – Terra James-Jura

The Bailey Hounds Record Release Show w/Tin Horses & Ruby The Hatchet at JB’s July 13

Posted on:

Johnny Brenda’s hosts the record release show of the haunting folk-blues outfit The Bailey Hounds for their latest EP All the Blood in the World. Ryan Petrillo’s troubled stirring vocals can send a chill up your spine even in the dead heat of summer. With the trademark alt-country twang and songs that have a confessional grit, The Bailey Hounds take a cue from age-old folk storytelling and infuse a drafty lurking-ghost-around-every-corner feel. Tin Horses will also be performing tonight at JB’s. Led by Kiel Everett, the bassist for Purling Hiss, the band brings a dingy grunge-inspired take on Americana adorned blues. There’s a worn and weathered aesthetic to Tin Horses with a purposely unfiltered, dirt-under-the-nails approach to songwriting. Everett’s straight semi-spoken vocals are met with guitars that take fiery aggressive runs; these runs aren’t of the smooth airy variety. Rather, they serve in an aching and screaming release, laying down a burden. The heavy 70’s rock-inspired, female-fronted Ruby The Hatchet open the evening prepared to bring a no-bones-about-it intensity to the stage.  As heavy bass lines clear the path for raunchy fuzzed-out guitar fires and vocals providing clairvoyant power that is equal to the task. This evening is a fine example that tried and true rock n roll is still alive and kicking. Don’t be late. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita
