Dream Safari Opening for Norwegian Arms & Jamaican Queens at PhilaMOCA July 19

Posted on:

Hot off last month’s release of Night Howl, Dream Safari (formerly known as Flamingos) will be kicking things off tonight at PhilaMOCA.  Songwriter and the creative mind behind the project, Chris Coulton, will no doubt bring the same electro dance beats that exist on his debut EP to the live setting. Hopefully those attending will have on their dancing shoes because not only does Coulton create an 80s-inspired, world sound, but he also weaves dance-pop expertly between the ambiance. Amidst the serious groove is a wistful lyricism, yearning for a time past while remaining at peace with its distance. Headlining the evening is Deli fave, Norwegian Arms. Wandering instrumentals that cascade from one emotion to the next is a mainstay for the local outfit. Also handpicked for the bill is Motor City’s Jamaican Queens, who really impressed Norwegian Arms frontman Brendan Mulvihill earlier this year at SXSW. Come out and hook up the traveling band from Detroit with some gas money. If the city just declared bankruptcy, then just imagine how much its musicians are struggling. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $8 – $10 Donation, All Ages – Shaylin O’Connell

Luke Rathborne becomes Rathborne + announces LP ‘SOFT’

Posted on:

In 2011 Luke Rathborne charmed the crap out of us with folky single "Dog Years," and it’s good to see the man has been keeping at it. The upcoming album "SOFT" (scheduled for a September release) is now presented as a group effort: "Luke" was dropped from the act’s name, and bio notes introduce them as ‘a band formed by Luke Rathborne & Darren Will’ – although Darren is still missing from the press shots.

From the preview single "Last Forgiven" (streaming) the project seems to have evolved in a poppier and more textural direction, without entirely losing the singer songwriter’s signature, in a metamorphoses that could be compared to the one undertaken by Luke Temple when he formed Here We Go Magic. What’s more important, the quality of the songwriting and the production are top notch here, so if the rest of the record is as good as this summery single, Rathborne’s music might keep company to a lot of people in the forseeable future.

Josephine and the Wildfront Tonight!

Posted on:

Josephine and the Wildfront has the sweetest song about bloody knuckles that I have ever heard. She also has the most frustratingly brief teaser video for her upcoming EP, “Swallowed by the Ocean.” I would not mention it if the 3 songs available online weren’t so lovely and intriguing. The EP is due out in August, and I cannot wait to hear more of her unusual voice braced by synthesizers and reverb. They are playing a few shows this month in and around Nashville, including one TONIGHT at the Dollhouse. Get all the vital details here. – Terra James-Jura

New Track: “Forget Me” – Pill Friends

Posted on:

Though the instrumentals are rather cheery in Pill Friends new track "Forget Me," their lyrics are still macabre as ever while drawing inspiration from an excerpt of Sören Kierkegaard’s The Sickness Unto Death as its intro. The song will appear on their upcoming LP that will be released via Brooklyn/Philly-based indie label Birdtapes.

From The Deli NYC’s online music submissions: The Lost Patrol

Posted on:

Any band that can maneuver this swiftly between stone cold hard rock, and dreamy shoegaze deserves to have a hot rod pasted to the cover of their recent album. In the music of The Lost Patrol, a NYC act that has already four full lengths under its belt, there’s a shared appreciation for both mystery and muscle that comes through the whole record.

From the straight-ahead attack of rocker ‘See You in Hell’ (streaming) to the charming seduction of ‘Play with FIre’ and the dream pop evanescence of ‘All Tomorrow’s Promises,’ this is an elastic rock group unafraid to mix an alchemy of rock history together in unlikely matrimony. Check out the new LP ‘Driven’ here, and if you are around Butler, NJ, you can catch these guys live at Architekt on July 20. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets).

From The Deli NYC’s online music submissions: Bagatelle

Posted on:

Paris/NYC based quartet Bagatelle has the sound of a thousand foreign beaches you have yet to visit, and languages you have yet to speak. It’s guitar-based twee pop shrouded in a soft twilight glow, and fronted by the pipes of singer Andrea Vaughn.

From the call and response of ‘Hey Darlin,’ to the bounce of ‘In place of Mister Cook,’ new EP ‘Rendez-vous Transatlantique’ contains lush, romantic settings perfectly placed next to all your Stan Getz playlists. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Video: Family of the Year “St. Croix”

Posted on:

Jubilant quintet Family of the Year have been picking up traction for quite some time and if you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, they’re certainly trying their hardest to win your attention. Now they’ve released a performance video of their exultant, tropical-tinged "St. Croix", which doesn’t sport any bells or whistles: just the band looking their finest as they remind us once again to dance all night in slow motion. It really doesn’t hurt to listen to it just one more time, now does it?

New Music Video: “At the Formerly British Council Supported Centre” – Norwegian Arms

Posted on:

Norwegian Arms just shared a new music for one of our favorite tracks off Wolf Like a Stray Dog, "At the Formerly British Council Supported Centre" (now say that three times – fast). We dig the dancin’ fool in tight jean shorts. It’s quite hilarious. The video was directed by Vika Lorionova. Norwegian Arms will be headlining tomorrow night at PhilaMOCA supported by Jamaican Queens, Sean N. Savage and Dream Safari. Enjoy!

Jacob Miller and the Bridge City Crooners Album Release at the Portland International Beerfest 7.19

Posted on:

In recent months Jacob Miller and the Bridge City Crooners have proven themselves to be one of the hardest working groups in the jug band scene. Playing weekly at venues all across town, being part of events such as Whiskeyfest Northwest and Jugapalooza, and a charming demeanor have brought them a fan base that grows with each performance. Their country-blues style, complete with washboard percussion, harmonica and upright bass goes back to the roots of american music and holds a nostalgic tone that people of most every musical preference can enjoy. This weekend the group is set to release their debut full length album which promises to bring them more of the recognition they deserve for the lively music they create. If you have yet to experience the fingerstyle guitar of one of the most talented young blues musicians in the city this is your chance to see them him at his best. Join the crooners for the release at the Portland International Beer Festival to celebrate while drinking some of the finest alcoholic beverages the world has to offer. – Benjamin Toledo

Grooms announce “Infinity Caller” LP + play The Knit on 07.22

Posted on:

One of the best slacker rock band to emerge from NYC in the second decade of the new millennium, Grooms – and the streaming single "I Think We Are Alone Now" – might echo many of your favorite artists from the early 90s (from Sonic Youth to Dinosaur Junior, Pixies and Pavement) without sounding quite like any of them. The band has just announced the release of their sophomore album "Infinity Caller" on Western Vinyl – a label that hosted noteworthy releases from Dirty Projectors and Here We Go Magic among others. Don’t miss their show at The Knitting Factory on July 22.
