NYC bands to keep an ear on: Palm’s tense noise rock

Posted on:

You know those days you just want to totally flip out without having to explain yourself? Well goddammit… you now have Palm to thank for making it happen for you. Lead singer Gerasimos Livitsanos barely has time to extract her thoughts from the page in the EP’s titular track and opener ‘Ode to Scott’ before the band kicks into high gear. And that’s pretty much what you can expect from the noise-rock quartet. Lots of fuzz, lots of mayhem, tension you can cut with a knife, and plenty to shake the walls apart. Check out their new EP and get your destruction on. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Royal Shoals Opening for The Bats at JB’s June 4

Posted on:

Royal Shoals, featuring former members of The Ropers (Slumberland, Teen Beat), Saturday People (Slumberland) and Public Record (High Two), shared their sophomore release earlier this year – a 4-song EP entitled Surrounderer + 3, which is a noticeable step up from the band’s debut Dirty Water. The tracks are more polished all-around as the trio journeys further into the dance-rock landscape. The EP was once again recorded at Uniform Recording. You can hear how the songs play out live tonight at Johnny Brenda’s when Royal Shoals open for New Zealand indie pop vets The Bats. (BTW: There will also be a free afterparty at the RUBA Club with performances by Catnaps and Ratburn as well as DJ sets from members of A Sunny Day in Glasgow and Literature.) Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $13, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

The Rotaries play The Knit on 07.20

Posted on:

For anyone like me who’s been slightly disappointed with the Strokes’ weird new direction, The Rotaries are here for you. An angular band playing a sort of Strokes-meets-REM brand of campus rock, The Rotaries have plenty to get off their chest, and songs like ‘Red Letter Day’ and opener ‘Tomorrow’s Game’ (streaming below) from latest LP ‘Before Leaving,’ will be too much fun for you to realize they’re actually working through some intense therapy sessions too. See the band live when they play The Knitting Factory on July 20. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Summer Twins June Residency at The Bootleg

Posted on:

Riverside raised sisters, Chelsea and Justine Brown, are bringing their sun-drenched garage pop to the Bootleg Bar every Monday this month. The two girls, who are both self-taught on their respective instruments, blend 50’s style pop harmonies over gritty rock ‘n roll. Their sugar and spice approach to the retro genre has gained them a fan base in Japan, where they are signed to IRMA Records. Summer Twins is California Dreamin’ at it’s best – breezy, romantic, and catchy, with just the right amount of kitsch. Peep their new video for “Forget Me,” the song which will be on their 7 inch EP due out June 25 on Burger Records. The video is a mod-tinged surf pop dreamland, sprinkled with cats and crafting and all the delightful vintage touches you would expect. – Jacqueline Caruso

Interview with Bombenkinder: DC Deli’s Band of the Month (May)

Posted on:

Baltimore’s gritty alt rockers Bombenkinder having been making their mark in the scene since 2005 and released their debut album in 2011 (check it out below.) Gigging on the regular between DC and B-more, they’ve gained a growing audience who voted them our Band of the Month, so we wanted to find out more about them. We got a hold of vocalist Allen Nichols who filled us in on everything from perseverance, to working on a new ablum, and Gretsch guitars. Now onto the interview…

A mellow evening with Wilsen, St. Claire, sami.the.great, Lora Faye and more

Posted on:

The opening night of our NYC B.E.A.F. 2013 at Spike Hill in Williamsburg won’t be a very loud one, showcasing a selection of truly gifted emerging singer songwriters and rootsy acts featuring a gentle sound. A lot of women on this bill, headlined by St. Claire and Wilsen (pictured, Deli Record of the Month last September) and their beautiful dream folk. On similarly ethereal coordinates dwells the trio now known as Basinger (formerly Makeout Room), who will open the show at 7.15pm. Lora Faye will bring a darker vein to the night with her country ballads tinged with jazzy noir elements. Songwriters Lisa Jaeggi (and her new band So So Apropos), sami.the.great, and French import Kiddo, will bring their personal approach to the genre, featuring varying degrees of pop influences.
