We are big fans of Doe Paoro‘s dark and tastefully tortuous alt-soul. The intriguing Brooklyn artists just unveiled a new rather morbid video for her song ‘New Lows,’ recently released as a 7" on White Iris. See her live at The Standard in NYC on June 19.
Candy Hearts plays Shirts for a Cure Rocks Off cruise on 06.16
Female vocalist Mariel Loveland leads NY/NJ punk rockers Candy Hearts, who bring a unique and invigorating power pop sound that the scene was ready to embrace. After only a few years as a band, they’ve gained popularity within the local NY punk scene and have recently made The Deli’s Top 20 NYC Alt Rock Charts. The band is set to play the upcoming Shirts for a Cure 10th Anniversary Cruise with Title Fight on June 16th. The show will take place aboard Manhattan’s Circle Line as part of the Rocks Off Concert Cruise Series. All proceeds benefit the The Syrentha J. Savio Endowment, which lends a hand to underprivileged women diagnosed with breast cancer to help them get the care that they need. New Music Video: “KV Crimes” – Kurt Vile & Aug. 28 Officially Declared Kurt Vile Day in Philly!
Matador Records just shared the new music video from Kurt Vile for the track "KV Crimes," which was directed by The Best Show on WFMU‘s Tom Scharpling. Yes, this is the one that you gathered together for the parade in Fishtown. We love that Wawa’s hoagies were represented! Also, on August 28, Mayor Nutter has officially declared it to be Kurt Vile Day. Vile will be playing a free solo concert in City Hall Courtyard (5:30pm) for the season finale of the City Hall Presents summer concert series. Before his set, the City of Philadelphia will present him with the Liberty Bell Award, the highest honor the City can bestow upon one of its citizens. The award is given only to native Philadelphians for recognition of outstanding professional achievements and civic generosity. Yeah, it’s safe to say that Kurt Vile and the Philly indie music community has come a long way in the last few years. Much love!
Alex Vans and the Hide Away this Friday (6/7) at Tropicalia
Stop worrying about what you’re going to do this Friday. Whether you’re looking to rock out, entertain guests from out of town, or show your partner/first date a good time, I have it all figured out for you. You’re gonna chase the night with local favorite Alex Vans and the Hide Away at Tropicalia. If you’re a fan of bright, melodic American power-pop, full of sound and energetic emotion (think Wilco, the Replacements, the Posies) then you will be sad to miss this. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’ll be happy to find out. Alex Vans will be opening for up for emerging national favorite Low Cut Connie (Jack White thinks they’re dreamy) who have a rootsy rockabilly vibe (and piano!). This is a lineup that pretty much everyone will enjoy. It‘s an earlier show for a Friday night (doors at 7, show at 8), so you can grab dinner, watch the show, and have plenty of time after to continue dancing/rocking/eating/enjoying everything else U St. has to offer. You can thank me after your party/date compliments you on organizing such a perfect night out.

You can catch Walking Bicycles with Videotape and Pamphleteers on July 29th at Empty Bottle.
Meg Myers showcases new songs at Troubadour tonight (June 6)
Meg Myers is bringing her emotionally charged, grungy girl rock to the Troubadour on Thursday, June 6. She has announced that she, along with her band, made up of producer, Doctor Rosen Rosen, cellist Ken Oak, and drummer Sam Gallagher, will be showcasing four new songs at the show. Here’s a debut of one of those new songs, “Cold.” The video features Myers alone in an empty warehouse with just her guitar and an amp, belting out her heart-wrenching tune. Simple on the surface, “Cold,” like many of her songs, cuts straight to the core, with a melody that will linger in your mind for days. You can grab tickets for her show here. – Jacqueline Caruso
Hey Champ “Celebrate”
Hey Champ released a new digital single this week called "Celebrate". The trio also announced that they are working on a full-length release.
NYC Artists on the rise: denitia and sene. plays SOB on 06.09
For the latest generation of soulsters, artists like the Weeknd and Drake, darkness comes naturally. denitia and sene. (spelled all lower caps and with a period – which makes our inner editor angry) also see the shadows behind the lights of love and sex. For their Facebook featured track, the haunting ‘breathe.dream.scream,’ singer Sene takes us through his troubled thoughts in and out of evening and morning spent with his lady. Good times are here, but anxieties have taken over. It’s a soul jam with serious trouble lurking behind, and will pull you in with each thumping heartbeat. Take a listen and catch their set live at S.O.B.’s this Saturday, June 9th. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Golden Animals announce releases + European dates
If you wish to be written up by an Italian music blogger, all you need to do is play music with Ennio Morricone influences… it took us 5 seconds to detect them on Baltimore and NYC based band’s Golden Animals‘ single ‘You Don’t Hear Me Now’ – streaming on their Bandcamp page. That happened about 2 minutes ago by the way… such was the URGE!!!
The single, which should be featured in a (psychedelic) indie remake of "For a Fistful of Dollars," is a preview from a full length scheduled to release in September. The band will also have a split 7" with Baltimore’s Flying Eyes out soon under German label H42, to coincide with the two bands’ late summer mini European tour, consisting – at this stage – of 3 gigs in Germany. Let’s call it a Germany mini-tour. Can’t wait to have these guys back in NYC!
Catnaps Calling It Quits
It’s always sad to hear when a band that’s part of the local music community decides to call it quits. Catnaps (formerly know as When I Was 12) just announced via Facebook before their performance last night at the RUBA Club that the band will be going their separate ways after their final show on June 19 at PhilaMOCA with Pet Milk. We wish them the best, and you should definitely come out to the Eraserhood art space to send them off properly.
