1939 Ensemble at Doug Fir 6.20

Posted on:

1939 Ensemble play a soundtrack that beguiles mystery and a feeling of underlying excitement. Jose Mendeles (former drummer for The Breeders, among others), and David Coniglio (School of Rock, Mongoloid Village) take their respective percussive talents to collide and connect the vibraphone and live drums, creating shifting beats and celestial electronic buzz. The music may take the listener into a cinematic space, perhaps being aloof in a swanky parlor of the past, or orchestrating strategic getaways (think Orbital’s "The Saint"). They have been gaining attention with their full length, Howl & Bite, which Pitchfork calls "industrial art deco", and of course, they were awarded The Deli Portland’s Best Emerging Artist of 2012. They are the cerebral apertif for the fellow instrumentation of Emily Wells on Thursday, June 20th at Doug Fir Lounge. – Brandy Crowe

Mellow Emo? Long Island’s Haverford plays The Wood Shop on 06.24

Posted on:

Long Island up-and-comers Haverford are a Long Island band to keep an eye on. Formed only last year, the quartet has already created some buzz in the LI scene, recently contributing to a split EP with State Lines via Meadowbrook Records (although the band is currently unsigned). For the most part, their sound is mellow and nostalgic, with some electric energy. The Emo-esque quintet are set to play at The Wood Shop out in Copiague with Dikembe, State Lines, Those Hated Hearts, and Scout on Monday the 24th. Listen to their two songs from the split with State Lines here. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

W-H-I-T-E breaks through with III

Posted on:

When listening to Cory Thomas Hanson’s new electronic pop album, III, I found myself constantly forgetting exactly what it was that I was originally doing. His music is so precise on its beats and transitions, and the euphoric feeling it gives you places you in a whole new kind of world and state of mind. Some might say that this comes from his culturally influenced background; after attending the innovative and renowned visual and performing arts schools CalArts University in California, Hanson learned how to synthesize a song properly and with great detail. But don’t get comfortable just yet, because this album is full of surprises and if you were expecting a full on electronic pop experience from III, you have another thing coming. With tracks like "Friends", "Can’t Fight The Feeling" and "Pretty Creatures", Hanson adds his own spin on a genre of music I am not used to. His fluorescent, Bon Iver style voice indulges you in a classic wasteland of psychedelic anthems and dream sequences, like in the track "Deep Water", where there are sounds of a babbling brook throughout the song. At the end of the day, buy this album, turn the lights off, lay in bed and close your eyes as the CalArts graduate takes you to new places within your mind you never even dreamed of going. – Kayla Hay

Futurebrite (ex Demander) releases debut EP at Glasslands on 06.21

Posted on:

We blogged about Oakland/Brooklyn based Futurebrite a few weeks ago – it’s the new project of singer Karen Corrêa (already involved in the NYC scene with now dissolved rock trio Demander) and producer Josh Grant. Industrial music has had a rather negligible role in pop music’s history so far, and it’s interesting to see a decidedly pop project introducing mechanical elements reminiscent of NIN and Ministry, while filtering out those bands’ rougher edges. Futurebrite will celebrate the release of their debut EP “Futurebrite Part 1” with a show at Glasslands on Friday 06.21 – also on the bill The Canon Logic.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of the best Electro songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Courtship Ritual – not of the frisky variety

Posted on:

An unsettling sense of foreboding runs throughout “Wild Like Us,” the A-side single from Brooklyn’s Courtship Ritual, who recently played their label GODMODE’s show at the Northside Fest. Evoking the spirit of 90’s era 4AD artists like His Name Is Alive and their disquieting “Can’t Go Wrong Without You,” ominous overtones emerge from within the spaces surrounding the song’s sparse arrangement. B-side “Biesenbach on the Beach (Klaus)” maintains a similar level of spaciousness, driven along a singular bassline and minimal slap percussion as vocals repeat the lines “grey fox grey – beach day.” Recorded by Colin Alexander and mastered by Joe Lambert, the tracks are available digitally worldwide and as a limited edition cassette on the GODMODE imprint. Light Heat Opening for Tame Impala at the E Factory June 19

Posted on:

The Electric Factory is in for an evening of psychedelics as local icon Quentin Stoltzfus (known for his work in Mazarin) opens with his new musical incarnation Light Heat. The group, which also includes The Walkmen’s Walter Martin, is set to release their self-titled LP on June 25th via Domino/Ribbon Music. Their sound is balanced retro pop-rock providing clean vocals and steady percussion while the guitars/keys drift onto a distanced and murky frontier. It will pair quite nicely with the free-flowing psychedelic energy of Australian natives Tame Impala. If your lucky enough to have tickets to this sold-out show, let your mind drift into the possibilities that this night offers. Electric Factory, 421 N. 7th St., 8pm, Sold Out, All Ages – Michael Colavita
