Nick Millevoi Opening for Japanese Guy at PhilaMOCA May 23

Posted on:

Nick Millevoi is one of the finest guitarist flying under the radar in Philly’s avant-garde music scene. You may have come across his work while performing on the electric 6-string with such acts as Many Arms, Electric Simcha, Archer Spade, Make A Rising, or one of the numerous jazz projects that he has lent his skilled fingers to over the years. However, when he fearlessly performs solo on his 12-string electric guitar creating some otherworldly sounds, that is the best evidence to support the truth behind my opening statement (and possibly that aliens, in fact, do live among us). Millevoi will be joined on the musically adventurous lineup at PhilaMOCA tonight by instrumental psych rock duo Air is Human, who will also be opening the evening for Japanese Guy, the experimental noise side project from Fleet Foxes’ Skye Skjelset with Andrew J.S. and Chris Icasiano. Yeah, things are about to get even weirder at the Moz. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8:30pm, $7 – $10 Donation, All Ages – Alexis V.

The Ghost Wolves, Getchya Hip Thrust, TMW 5/24/13 @ Scoot Inn

Posted on:

The Ghost Wolves are like tumbleweed blowing through the swamp. There might be a layer of grime on their sheen, but it doesn’t diminish any of their beauty. In fact, it enhances it. Carley Wolf’s fuzzy guitar entwines perfectly with Jonny Wolf’s frenetic drums. And the vocals! Oh those vocals! All the bluesy swagger of Mudhoney’s Mark Arm with the coquettish lilt that only Carley can provide.

Get your hands on Getchya Hip Thrust, a two-song gem that includes the title track and the song "Black Crow" (featuring BP Fallon). Both songs are vibrant delicacies plucked from a humid marsh, so damp that you might be unable to draw a deep breath. But for the real experience, catch them on stage where their intensity and magnetism are amplified to such levels that you might just put on a mask and let Carley call you “Grandma.” See them at the Scoot Inn tomorrow with Ghostbunny and Zest of Yore. Not to be missed. – Written by Josh Denslow

The Sea and The Mother EP Release Show at The Waypost 5.24

Posted on:

Crossing mediums, genres and historical mythology, The Sea and The Mother is an incarnation of her Dao Strom’s perpetual creative impulse. In her latest EP, We Were Meant to Be a Gentle People, emotive vocal melodies and ambient frequencies are balanced with a folk sensibility that carries a melancholic undertone in it’s subtleties. Accompanied by a compilation of poetry, artwork and writings on Vietnam, the release flows evenly through six songs that feel dynamic, meditative and honest in their presentation. Listening to the EP is a unique experience and, above all, is representative of an artistic drive that defies traditional categorization. Join The Sea and The Mother this Friday night at the Waypost to celebrate the release of We Were Meant to Be a Gentle People and pick up a copy for yourself. – Benjamin Toledo

Some hardcore math rock will be taking over the Echo on Thursday night with NorCal band, Tera Melos headlining, and Oxford based This Town Needs Guns lending support.
