New Music Video: “Eraser” – Young Statues

Posted on:

Have you ever had a relationship that you’d like to delete from your memory? Well, often times that is easier said than done. However, in Young Statues‘ new music video for the track "Eraser" (from their EP Age Ain’t Ours), which premiered yesterday on MTV’s Buzzworthy, the band had a fun idea to just throw a big party with music, friends, booze, a sledgehammer and a bonfire to burn all your exes’ stuff. However, you might want to avoid breaking into their places and robbing them. That’s some psycho ex-girlfriend/boyfriend shit! But let’s be honest. You’re already a bit off your rocker if you need to burn their possessions to move on – just sayin’.

Electronica from Queens: Neonfaith

Posted on:

New quartet Neonfaith describe themselves online as “just a few kids in Jamaica, Queens making music in the basement.” What goes on down in that basement is anyone’s best guess. By the looks of their recent video, “Escape,” (see it here, song streaming below) it’s a whole lot of thinking about what to do with the past. Answer: Google it and move on. Beneath a boilerplate Portishead beat and a twitchy dubstep production, the video shows NYC denizens passing around old school nightclub flyers and handing out walkie-talkies, moodily suggesting that technology could stand to cool its ass out for a while. A rich soul vocalist cries out, “Hear your static on my radio/Shiver through me, let it go,” a chorus reminding us that utopianism still works best via word of mouth, in the flesh. – Brian Chidester

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Caliph’s anticipated album Heart in Mind record release show announced

Posted on:

On Monday, April 29, the wait will finally be over. Boston-based rapper Caliph will be performing at Church of Boston to celebrate the release of his latest record, Heart in Mind. The disc, which he has been promoting relentlessly for months with the help of the Good Karma crew, is sure to impress even the most casual of hip-hop fans. In an age of increasing social media presence and frequently leaked records, I am impressed at how well Caliph has been able to control this album. He has managed to only release artwork for the album and two singles, "Go (The Baddest)" and "Dear Lord", without allowing any further information to reach the public.

"Go (The Baddest)" is a very well-produced single, and if this track is any indication of the quality of the rest of the album, I’m sure it will not disappoint.  The song has a little more of a "club" feel than some of his previous work, which matches well with his incredibly tight flow. His rhymes and cadences are executed perfectly–something you rarely hear from non-major-label hip hop artists.

"Dear Lord" has much more of a smooth hip-hop feel–a style over which Caliph seems to have great command. This track has faint hints of Lupe Fiasco–just a really relaxed vibe, with well-written, powerful lyrics and a great hook. – Dan McMahon

Serengeti “Kenny Dennis”

Posted on:

We’ve talked about Serengeti’s persona Kenny Dennis before when he released his EP last year. Well, Kenny Dennis, the over-the-top 50 year old beer drinking and brat eating Chicagoan, is back with a full LP. The album features contributions from Odd Nosdam, Jel, and a guest spot from Anders Holm (Workaholics), and comes out on June 25th via Anticon.

The-Drum “Sirens”

Posted on:

EDM duo The-Drum have released the first single from their highly anticipated debut album, Contact, set to be released on June 25th. The new track is called "Sirens". The new album has some what of a sci-fi theme.

“Basically, the album exists in a universe in which there is a multinational conglomerate. That company is called Sense Net and it is part pharma- ceutical company and part hardware/software developer… their services are something along the lines of isolation tanks with audio, visual, and chemical elements to give the user various sensations and experiences based on the “programs” they have selected.”

You can catch The-Drum at Empty Bottle tomorrow night, April 24th with Slava.

Desert Daze 2013: Mini Mansions Interview

Posted on:

Before the psych pop trio took the stage, we caught up with Michael and Tyler of Mini Mansions to talk about life on the road, experiencing a David Lynch night club and where they ate the best burger.

The Deli: How do you prepare for playing a festival?

Michael: We don’t come out with a special set. For us with these kind of festivals, we’re still a small band and we’re trying to gain new fans, so it’s not like we’re trying to play the hits to appease people. We’re just trying to play what we love and hope people love it.  It’s nothing really different. Maybe a little bit more jamming.

The Deli: Who are you excited to see today?

Michael: We would love to see Warpaint. We love those girls. But we have to leave. [to play a show in Palm Springs] It’s good we’ve seen them a couple times before. We opened up for them a couple times. And our friend was recording their new record, so our paths cross.

But this band sounds good (referring to Cosmonauts, who were playing the Block Stage)

The Deli: Today is Record Store Day, do you have anything special for it?

Michael: We have all these songs recorded, but we just couldn’t get something together. So many people do special things, which is so awesome for music fans.

The Deli: Do you remember the first record you bought?

Tyler: Love and The Doors. They were my parents and they were all messed up. Unless you were a collector, your parents just left them in the garage to get all mossy.

Michael: I know the first CD I bought was MC Hammer. I’m sure about that. But the first  record I ever bought, I remember I was eight or something and going to FedCo and I bought Green Day Dookie and Offspring Smash on cassette tape.

The Deli: You spent a lot of time on the road. What was a highlight of all your touring last year (with Foster the People)?

Michael: Paris. It was weird. We did three shows in London. We did Berlin. They were all ok. But then we go to Paris and did two nights and it was just unbelievable. The fans were just like the best crowd you could ask for. Especially opening for a pop band that’s massive. You could tell they love art and they care.

Tyler: We had great burgers there too. It was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. And one of the dopest clubbing nights I’ve ever done.

Michael: That was at the David Lynch club. He has this club in Paris called Silencio.

Tyler: It’s just a club at the end of the day, but the interior design was out of control. When you enter, you’re escorted into this hallway and you have to walk slowly with this security guy and once you get inside there’s just a lot of black glass.

The Deli: What’s next for Mini Mansions?

Michael: In a month, we’re doing a short run with Arctic Monkeys. We’re really excited about that. We haven’t toured in a year. So we’re really excited to get out there. We recorded a bunch of new music.

Tyler: We recorded a whole EP. We recorded two new songs of recent. We’ve written essentially 80% of the record already. We spent this year just writing and playing special shows. So when we’re ready we don’t have to go back in the studio and record everything.

The Deli: Do you like touring?

Michael: I love it. If you don’t, you got into the wrong profession. You could stay home too and make music, but if you want to be in a band, you better like the road. Or you figure it out real quickly and make a change.

The Deli: Will you be playing in LA?

Michael: Yeah, we’ll play a show right before we leave for tour. We’re just going to throw something together somewhere really small. A free show or something just for fun because we haven’t played LA in a long time.

Brotherhood Electric Releases Modern Mind EP, 4/13/2013

Posted on:

Brotherhood Electric kicks off "Modern Mind" with a sense of yearning. “You sounded so vivid / When you showed me where you used to live / But now it’s gone.” And this is only twenty seconds in. But rest assured, it’s not all dreary. Later, they are filling their heads with “Spilt Beer.”

“Cigregret”, the first and by far the catchiest song on the EP, begs to be replayed the moment it ends. Bright washes of guitars and keyboards are accompanied by Jackson McGovern’s jittery drums. It all builds to a repeated outro that had me singing along even if I couldn’t understand all of the words.

Throughout the course of "Modern Mind," Brotherhood Electric comb the sonic territories mined by Yeasayer and Toro y Moi. Seemingly nourished on a diet of adult contemporary and electronic slow jams, Brotherhood Electric has charted a new course. Songs of seduction created by the video game generation. When the saxophone slithered into the second half of “My Love For You” all I could think was: Perfect.

After a number of tonal shifts over the course of the EP, vocalists Paul Grant and Garson Ormiston finally declare in unison “I’m still right here.” The yearning that kicked off Modern Mind was back. A yearning for understanding, for acceptance, for adulthood. But above all, a yearning to be heard. — Written by Josh Denslow

NYC Prog-Rockers Tauk release ‘Homunculus’ at Sullivan Hall on 04.24

Posted on:

More praise should be given to musicians who can actually play, because the Brooklyn scene – among other things – is a testament to the fact that mastering an instrument ain’t easy. Tauk – a band as jazzy as The Deli can go as far as music coverage (we don’t cover jazz!) – is equal parts music nerds with prog/post rock tendencies and soulful songwriters. Often compared to established jam bands like Phish and Lotus – but with a feel all their own for deep groove – the quartet has a rare ability to channel emotional melodic leads, and all without a lead singer. With their next LP ‘Homunculus’ due to be released April 30th, they’re set to continue their fast rise. But instead of waiting for the next Peach Fest or Bonnarroo to see the group’s funk and freestyle freakouts, check out the quartet before the album’s release this Wednesday, April 24th at Sullivan Hall. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
