Below is a new music video from Nightlands, a.k.a. Dave Hartley, for the track "Born to Love" off his latest release Oak Island. It was directed by She Policeman (who was inspired by Andy Warhol and the song, itself), using footage from another video filmed with an old VHS camcorder. Nightlands also just announced a string of headlining dates that will make a local stop on Friday, May 31 at Johnny Brenda’s. BTW: Send out some good vibes to Hartley this weekend because he’ll be competing at the Professional & Amateur Pinball Association’s 2013 Match-Play Championship in Pittburgh, alongside four-time world champion Bowen Kirens and pinball champion/former ’76 Todd MacCulloch, who both personally invited him.

Night Beds Cover Robyn for AV Club
A.V. Club’s "A.V. Undercover" series invites bands to choose a song from a list of hits and obscurities of A.V.’s choosing and dares the band to do their best while recording the results. Nashville’s own Night Beds recently took the challenge, opting to cover Robyn’s "Dancing On My Own." Stripping the song of its Swedish dance-pop elements, Night Beds slow things down a bit, making the sadness of the song’s lyrics sound just a little more heart-wrenching.
Night Beds’ Country Sleep is available now via Dead Oceans, and you can see the band play Nashville again at the Mercy Lounge on May 24th.
Our Griffins Opening for Port St. Willow at KFN April 9
Our Griffins, a.k.a. DJ Brown, is a young artist with a wealth of talent. The multi-instrumentalist has the ability to craft thoughtful lyrics, which are put on display by a vocal styling that finds itself somewhere between greats like Nick Drake and David Bowie. He’s currently finishing up work on his new full-length album that also features the drumming talents of Eric Slick (Dr. Dog, Norwegian Arms, etc.). Our Griffins will be coming in from the Lehigh Valley tonight to open for the ethereal sounds of Deli NYC fave Port St. Willow. NYC Artists on the rise: Cool Serbia
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m as infatuated with shoegaze as any skinny-black-jeans-wearing-hipster out there, but it’s refreshing when a band incorporates other elements into the genre instead of just serving straight up 90’s nostalgia. Brooklyn’s Cool Serbia has the sound of a psych rock band, but digs a little deeper into music history, pulling out qualities of the bubbly pop of the 60’s. The first track off of their self-titled EP “Dream Lover” sounds like a (dirty) surfer doo-wop number, until in the chorus heavy doses of noise and feedback bring out the blokes’ shoegazer soul in full display. Their track “Kill Yourself” is much more straight shoegaze, keeping their pop influence to catchy guitars and tambourines. They only just released their debut EP this past March, and they’re already gaining some heat, opening for Andrew WK a couple of weeks ago at Kent Ave. We expect to be seeing more from these guys. – Lucille Sherman

The Harmonica Lewinskies almost win Deli poll + play Bowery Electric on 04.13
The Harmonica Lewinskies aren’t the kind of band you usually expect to find over here in NY. The funk and blues group channels Clinton-era sexual intrigue in their name, and hard-driving horn sections in tunes like ‘The Ghost Pal Song’ and ‘Harlem River Valley.’ Ok… so perhaps they’re not the most serious guys in the world, but if second EP ‘Salad Days’ leaves you with anything… it’s that these guys know how to f***ing play. And that’s not something I can say about enough local bands. The band just ended a residency at Pianos – and almost won the latest Deli Artist of the Month poll gathering more than one thousand votes! See them live at Bowery Electric on April 13 with fellow Newyorkers Man in a Crowd. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
New Track: “Sympathy for the Hook Man” – CaveWomen
We’ve documented how three-fourths of the members from Drink Up Buttercup (James Harvey, Farzad Houshiarnadja and Michael Cammarata) moved on to form White Birds, and now Houshiarnadja and Cammarata have gone on to start Night Panther. Have you ever wondered what former Drink Up Buttercup bassist Ben Mazzochetti, a.k.a. Ben Money, has been up to lately? Well, he just surfaced with his new project CaveWomen, and has also taken hold of the mic. Along with Chris Schwertz, Mazzochetti has been producing synth-driven, grage-noise rock, and below is their first single "Sympathy for the Hook Man." You can catch the duo performing live when they make their Philly debut at this year’s Sundrop Music & Arts Fest.
The Lonely Wild release new LP
The soft sensual beat of The Lonely Wild’s new album, The Sun as It Comes Up, attaches graceful lyrics and a perfect melody to their already upscale sound. The smooth harmonies of this Los Angeles quintet band are haunting, persuasive and provoking. With so many different genres of music to be influenced by and so many different bands to shine through, band member Andrew Carroll talked to KCET about the band’s influential prospects. Carroll talked about them embedding ideas from different genres into their own, which include singer/songwriter Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash, Woody Guthrie, and even some piano trios from Ravel. The integrated aesthetics of The Lonely Wild can be heard and felt throughout the entire album, but with songs like "Buried in the Murder", "The Sun as it Comes Out", and" Flames to Fight", the noticeable touch of strength and closure attached to their lyrics really hits home. The Sun as it Comes Up satisfies every listeners’ needs, with hypnotic beats, tranquil voices and their down-to-earth imagery catching everyone off their feet. The distinct, passionate lyrics this band drives for starts at the very first song and ends with the last. – Kayla Hay
