Interview with Lindsey Buckingham Palace: DC Deli’s Band of the Month (March)

Posted on:

Lindsey Buckingham Palace is a DC based hard rock band that started in 2010 and got their solid current line-up in late 2012. The quartet is now complete with Mike Hill, Mark Minicucci, Marc Rothschild, and Names Thompsn who produce a sound that caught the ears of plenty of fans who made them our Band of the Month in March. We got a hold of them to find out a little more. Here Mike tells us about the relation to Fleetwood Mac, the Velvet Lounge, and rehearsing in bedrooms. Now onto the interview…

Catch LBP live at IOTA Nightclub in Arlington VA on 4/26.

Where Is My Mind?: On the Water’s Fletcher VanVliet

Posted on:

On the Water surprised us in 2011 with one of the most impressive local releases of that year with their debut EP Anchor. Born from the mind of Da Comrade!’s Fletcher VanVliet, this solo folk project has expanded to as much as a nine-piece plus special guests for the recording of the band’s first LP False Starts. VanVliet has been on the road performing as a trio for all of March and the beginning of April in support his new release. He’s currently making a pit stop home for a little recovery time and to celebrate his latest accomplishment with friends, fans and the rest of his band members tomorrow night at The Beaumont Warehouse before taking on the second leg of his tour. We caught up with VanVliet yesterday to find out more about the recording of False Starts, how tour has been going so far, and much more HERE.

A Deli Premiere: Gondola releases debut EP + plays Muchmore tonight (04.11)

Posted on:

Gondola is an ambiguous name for an indie band – if on one hand it conjures up images of mainstream tourism in Venice (yours truly knows something about that, since he lived there for 8 years), on the other it’s also true that those darn little boats rock like no other. Brooklyn band Gondola doesn’t rock particularly hard though, if not occasionally. Their tunes are propelled by strummed acoustic guitars, but they are not really folky. They are indie pop tunes featuring an element of blue thoughtfulness that falls somewhere in the middle between The Shins’ early lo-fi gems, Belle and Sebastian’s suggestive storytelling and the Beta Band’s quirky pop experiments. Charming. We are premiering the single "We Are the Map" – streaming below – from their debut EP. The band will celebrate its release tonight (04.11) with a show at Brooklyn’s Muchmore with Vensaire, Tica Douglas, and Bill Bartholomew.

The 2nd Annual XPN Music Film Festival April 11 – 14

Posted on:

This evening is the kick off to the 2nd Annual XPN Music Film Festival (from April 11 – 14), who is once again collaborating with the Philadelphia Film Society. There will be 17 film screenings that will include documentaries, biopics about musicians, and movies that have distinctive music soundtracks. A few of our suggestions would be Freak Night (“video document of The Flaming Lips’ famed 2012 Halloween show”), The Punk Singer (a documentary about Bikini Kill/Le Tigre/The Julie Ruin’s Kathleen Hanna), Good Ol’ Freda (“the story of Freda Kelly, a shy Liverpudlian teenager asked to work for a young local band hoping to make it big: the Beatles”), and Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me. You can check out the rest of the of festival’s schedule HERE.

Arms That Work releases debut EP “Totalitarian Gov.”

Posted on:

Many important decisions are made after a late night binge of tacos and beer. I can attest to this, as there’s something in those delicious carne asada burritos that opens a flood of information to your senses besides long showers and sleep. Recent artist of the month poll winners Arms that Work claim to have written most of their debut release, “Totalitarian Gov.” in the midst of these sessions. And it certainly shows, as the EP flourishes with bustling creativity – the trio’s brainy, serpentine arrangements are constantly in flux, anchored with frenetic guitar passages that mingle with warbling synth tones and contrasting dynamics. It actually reads more complicated than it sounds; after all, their arty, instrumental interplay flexes the time-signature kinetics of math rock. But Arms that Work like to shift gears fluidly, offering a more streamlined form of guitar rock that mirrors Superchunk at their most impassioned.
