Ray Prim Hosts The Real Weird Soul Writers Club on 04/15/2013, 7:00PM @ One-2-One Bar

Posted on:

Writing new songs on a weekly basis, Ray Prim consistently cranks out heartfelt pop material that is both soulful and folky in roots. On February 2, 2013 he released an album at Strange Brew on the South end of Austin featuring Karen Goh and a long list of talented musicians. The release was a huge success as he had to turn people away at the door and for good reason: going to a Ray Prim show is like going to a party with one hell of a soundtrack and a room full of quirky new friends. It’s an interactive experience between jokes, appropriately placed anecdotes and the crowd swaying to the vocal blends of Ray and his backup singer whom he affectionately calls Mexican Chocolate.

In addition to being a wonderful writer and performer, Ray also hosts The Real Weird Soul Writers Club from 7-8:30p.m. at the One-2-One Bar, every Monday but the first of the month. In this event audience members get to contribute to the songwriting process by writing down ideas which are then drawn from a hat. If their idea is selected the song will be performed the following week. Leave it to Ray to keep things interesting! — Written by Charise Sowells

Weekly Feature: Sleepies

Posted on:

Brooklyn based trio Sleepies is some kind of hidden treasure of the NYC punk-rock scene – although we agree "treasure" is not a word that should be used for anything related to punk… Filthy-case-full-of-gold-buried-under-a-mountain-of s**t – maybe? Tracy Mamoun had the chance to interact with the band, check out the resulting interview here. (photo credit gimmetinnitus.com)

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best NYC songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. Wants to Save Mankind at the E Factory April 14

Posted on:

Sociopathic Time Altering Robot Warrior Of Organic Design, a.k.a. S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D., the prototype has been sent back from the future to alter the time continuum and save its doomed Planet Vitrus from their eventual destroyers, the Pathonians, with the band’s own brand of “Cyber Rock.” The local quintet harken back to the gloriously theatrical days of 70’s glam rock where showmanship ruled, which is often lost in modern day performers who simply act too cool for school to show any emotion and have fun on stage. A lot of thought and creativity has been put into this project, and you have the opportunity to experience it on the big stage of the E Factory tonight when they open for Mindless Self Indulgence. “If mankind is to have any hope of survival, you must attend. Mankind’s fate is in your hands.” Electric Factory, 421 N. 7th St., $28 (+fees), All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Tango Alpha Tango Play White Eagle Saloon 4.13

Posted on:

Sometimes a band can carry a sound so heavy it punches you right in the guts. Tango Alpha Tango do just that. Party because they write and play from the guts and partly because they’re not afraid to play new age Satanic blues that stay-at-home mothers of the 1970s would panic about. To adventurous souls, however the distorted slide guitar that draws the likes of Jimmy Page and Jack White sound nothing short of beautiful. But enough of the preaching, Tango Alpha Tango simply knows how to get down and do so with excellent stage presence led by frontman and guitarist Nathan Trueb. The band’s powerful bass lines are traced by an affected and harmonious keyboard that are both held down by a thorough drummer. Nathan’s bluesy guitar and punkish vocals make this band one of the most powerful acts that Portland has to offer. – Colin Hudson

Swearin’ Opening for Tenement & Diarrhea Planet at Glitoria April 13

Posted on:

Nostalgia tempered with fun awaits tonight at Glitoria, where Swearin’, originally from Brooklyn, hold forth with a brand of blissful punk overlaid with 90s indie that feels right at home coming from West Philly. Bear in mind, too, that they come from the vaunted P.S. Eliot, where vocalist Allison Crutchfield partnered with her twin sister to create a beloved feminist pop-punk outfit; now, it’s Allison and the very Doug Martsch-sounding Kyle Gilbride manning the helm of Swearin’, for many of the same joys they’ve offered in previous projects. They’ll be the fulcrum of tonight’s bill with badass local hardcore outfit Attitude Era (watch out for these guys), Tenement, Diarrhea Planet, and Ovlov. Glitoria, (Please contact perryage@gmail.com for more info.) 6:30pm, $7, All Ages. – Alyssa Greenberg

The Blank Tapes Announce Sophomore Album and US Tour

Posted on:

Matt Adams, the brainchild behind The Blank Tapes, is set to release his sophomore full length, Vacation, May 14 on Antenna Farm Records. The first single, “Coast to Coast,” is perfect for scratching your summertime itch: a laid-back, sparkling tune for breezing down the PCH with all your friends in tow. Culling from the classic sun-drenched Southern California songbook, Adams is carving out his own piece of this resurgent landscape. With Beach Boys-inspired harmonies and a splash of groovy psych/surf moments, this is a delightful pop tune that will leave a smile on your face and an unexplainable desire to drop everything just to dip your toes in the ocean. The Blank Tapes are currently on a nationwide tour that ends right here in LA with their record release show at The Satellite on May 31. – Jacqueline Caruso

The Naked Sun EP Release Party at Fleisher Art Memorial April 12

Posted on:

The Naked Sun, while still a relatively new band (formed just two years ago in 2011), have managed to create a sound wise beyond their years. Keeping the melodies simple, but the multi-layered instrumentals result in rootsy music with calming complexity. Self-described as “honest rock,” the band gets its relatability from their folk-inspired notes, guitarist Tim Campbell can give a song a nice twang without steering too far into the backcountry. Campbell will also take up the keys on a song or two, lending toward the outfit’s soul. Lead vocalist, and additional guitarist, Drew Harris’ soothing croon and thoughtful lyrics add depth to the music, while bass by Eric Budesa and drums by Dave Gladney represent the backbone of each track – providing the song’s structure and helping to toe the line between folk and rock. Joining The Naked Sun for their Space, Place, and Time EP release party will be the soulful rock outfit, The Way Home, who’ll add a touch of blues to the evening. The Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St., $10 (includes EP & drinks), 8pm, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell

Double record release at Glasslands on 04.18 Cassandra Jenkins + Cardboard

Posted on:

Record releases are really what The Deli’s staff spends most of its time researching, so it’s always a bonus when we find a double release like the one scheduled at Glasslands for April 18:

Cassandra Jenkins – who is currently being crushed in our Artist of the Month poll by her little brother’s band Morningsiders (little we knew…) – put a spell on us with the beatiful and lush mellowness of the preview track from the upcoming EP "Up in Flames" (streaming below). She will get her revenge over the daring sibiling when she’ll play the huge Music Hall of Williasburg stage on June 28, opening for Teen and Eleanor Friedberger. So it sounds like Bowery noticed her already, which can’t be a bad thing.

We included this song to The Deli’s playlist of mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Cardboard is a slightly more upbeat (and also more lo-fi) trio that seems infatuated with Syd Barret’s deranged but genius musical mind (and we say: incompetent music fans are those who are not!). We’ve been actively looking for the new Syd Barret since we started The Deli (that’s why we had Grizzly Bear on the cover of our 1st issue back in 2004). May this be it?

Rarechild’s productive 2012 ended with new single + video

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s Electro-Rock trio Rarechild put out one single per month in 2012, and just released this video of the December track, entitled "Hybrid." Channeling the darker side of the 80’s and the sparse angular electro sound of teutonic origins, the single is based on sober melodies and simple buzzy synth lines reminiscent early Depech Mode.

We included this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best NYC songs by emerging electronic NYC artists – check it out!
