Live Review: Port St. Willow at The Knit (04.03.2013)

Posted on:

Like a laser-light show, watching Port St. Willow live last Saturday at The Knit was an audio/visual spectacle. The band created true post-rock performance art — a sleek production equally suited to a large theater.
Port St. Willow is often compared to The Antlers, similarities born of the long collaboration between Principe and Antlers’ frontman Peter Silberman (who was at the show). But the sound felt more like Mogwai’s instrumentals, Bon Iver and slowcore Smoky Robinson. With rock drums and prominent audio/visual effects, Principe added energy to the introspective, ambient jam sessions on "Holiday," Port St. Willow’s first full-length, reissued this month.
His expressions and Siren-like falsetto translated the melancholic mood of the hard-to-hear lyrics. Live trombone doubled as sax and experimental noise manipulated via pedals. The trombonist also played small percussion with shells, clackers and castanets. Every stop-start break was perfectly timed, the band watching each other in anticipation.

Colored light and star projections often camouflaged the band. Principe asked the audience if they liked the visuals he called, “a Northern Lights thing.”
Port St. Willow played about an hour, without monster 25-minute bonus track, “Soft Light Rush.” The loud final crescendo was the definitive peak that said, “No encore necessary.” – Bianca Seidman

A NYC band for the endless summer: Basinger

Posted on:

For anyone missing the endless summer, Basinger (previously known as Makeout Room) is here to bring the beach. Just try and not get lost in the skyscraper crooning of tracks ‘Rehobeth’ or ‘Going to California.’ The Brooklyn quartet describes their music as ethereal sounds, and are set to release their debut EP later this year. Hoping the good weather keeps up until then. – Mike Levine

New Video: Listening Party (Promo Trailer) – Pattern Is Movement

Posted on:

After catching Pattern Is Movement’s set at Johnny Brenda’s for Norwegian Arms’ Album Release/Mayan Apocalypse Party at the end of last year, we are way pumped to hear their new album, which everyone can do on Tuesday, April 30 for the duo’s hometown listening party that will be part of the final Cinedelphia-curated Tuesday Tune-Out. It will be a free all-ages event. Below are a few words that the band had to say about the evening as well as its promo trailer.

On Tuesday, April 30th, Pattern Is Movement are unlocking the door to their studio — and to the past four years of writing, recording, and mixing their new album, the anticipated followup to 2008’s All Together. In their hometown of Philadelphia, on one night only, Andrew Thiboldeaux and Chris Ward will reveal the new Pattern Is Movement record — and the road to it: the experiments, the failures, the epiphanies, and the convergence of art forms that nourished the gestation of ten tracks and a wild new frontier for the duo.

Join Pattern Is Movement for a hometown sneak-preview listening party event during the Cinedelphia Film Festival, where new songs will be played along with the film scenes that inspired the record’s completion. Accompanying this exclusive view into the band’s process will be a Q&A with Thiboldeaux, Ward, and the album’s lead engineer David Downham. The discussion will be moderated by Peter English.

Scorpion Child Release A 45 RPM Of Their Single Polygon Of Eyes, 3/8/2013

Posted on:

We’ve all heard the question asked time and again, "Who is going to bring rock and roll back?" Scorpion Child just may be the answer. If all the favorite classic rock bands joined hands to invoke the spirit of a modern rock god, their first creation would come out sounding something like the debut album this 5 piece psych rock band from Austin, TX. It’s that perfect blend of familiarity and excitement for something new.

Keeping the quality of music as high as their stage antics, this band is quickly on the rise. Recently signed to Nuclear Blast Records, they had an official SXSW showcase this year and are currently touring in preparation for the album drop date, June 25, 2013. The full length album is going to be a gatefold, double LP released at Waterloo Records where they’ll be playing a show the same day. Their single, Polygon Of Eyes, was made available for purchase on March 8, 2013. Click here to check out the lyric video for the track. — Written by Charise Sowells

Small Houses Opening for Sean Hoots at JB’s April 15

Posted on:

Originally hailing from Michael Moore’s hometown Flint, Michigan and now based in Philadelphia, Jeremy Quentin, a.k.a. Small Houses, is an indie folk artist and multi-instrumentalist who charmingly captures his surroundings in verse. Spinning tales full of honesty and gentle, pretty melodies, I’m sure that our gritty but beautiful city is providing plenty of material for his next release. Small Houses will be opening for Sean Hoots of famed Hoots & Hellmouth tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. Hoots has been taking a go of it on his own lately (which makes absolutely perfect sense since “Hellmouth,” a.k.a. Andrew Gray, left the group in 2011 to work on his solo project). The soulful Americana troubadour can still dazzle and delight crowds simply with an acoustic guitar and his much-beloved voice. (However, he will be joined on stage by Hoots & Hellmouth bandmates Todd Erkel and Rob Berliner.) The two acts have been on tour together since the end of March and things are going to get really intimate this evening when they make a stop home. They’ll also be joined by Mississippi duo Water Liars. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ (Small Houses Photo by Marencelest) – Q.D. Tran

The Bottlecap Boys Rework Classic Sounds in “East to West” 4.19

Posted on:

The Bottlecap Boys will be releasing their new album, East to West, April 19th at the Wonder Ballroom. East to West takes an old classic house of music with chipped white paint, broken windows, porch falling apart and remodel it into something beautiful. The foundation of this musical house is a solid base of the greats of country and bluegrass. A certain Hank Williams Sr. waltz sound and good old fashioned Bill Monroe form the foundation, with some tinges of what might be called Irish-punk adorning the walls. What’s important is that the Bottlecap Boys take well worn grooves then rework, polish and innovate the sounds to make something new and fresh. Among the notable aspects of their new album are the lyrics and vocals. Most bluegrass(y) groups have the standard elements – thumping bass, the devil’s fiddle wailing away and mandolin plucking around like a chicken. The Bottlecap Boys lack nothing in the standard elements but instead bring inventive songwriting and lyrics to the table as well. A great example of this is the slower-paced track, “Bridges,” which is a wonderful synergy of country waltz, bluegrass particulars and a hint of sea shanty. The release of East to West promises to be one hell of an event, so be there or be square. Friday, April 19th at the Wonder Ballroom. – Cory Huennekens

Punk/Emo from NYC: I Am the Avalanche working on new album

Posted on:

Vinnie Caruana, the Long Island native frontman of now defunct The Movielife, has been involved in another band called I Am The Avalanche for some time now. Although not as well-known, they have the potential to do even better than Caruana’s former project. Now based in NYC, their latest album ‘Avalanche United’ stormed the local punk/emo scene with energetic and catchy tunes. Known for having an electrifying live show, the quintet recently announced that they are demoing songs for their next album, which – according to the band’s Twitter feed – is “going to be insane." A due date has yet to be announced, we are looking forward to checking it out. Hear the single "Brooklyn Dodgers" from ‘Avalanche United’ streaming below. – Michael Haskoor

Band Spotlight: Black on Black

Posted on:
Lawrence’s own self-described American garage punk band Black on Black flies in the face of what is currently perceived, in some circles, as cool. They do not have a gimmick, they haven’t incorporated glockenspiel and banjo into the music to appease the indie kids, they do not rehash Misfits or Black Flag riffs to grab the punk vote, no. Black on Black just makes aggressive yet melodic music that gets your attention, throttles it, and refuses to let go.

The band will be releasing its second EP Let’s Get Cynical on Friday, April 26 at the Replay Lounge with Muscle Worship and Many Moods of Dad. Read our interview with them at the link here!
