Heliotropes announces release + plays two NYC shows in two days

Posted on:

Brookyln’s fuzzed-out psychedelic rock group, Heliotropes have a sound that would please the fans of Black Sabbath and Sleater-Kinney. Their latest single, Moonlight, is characterized by dark, heavy guitar riffs and melancholy strings that swirl around singer, Jessica Numsuwankijkul’s brooding vocal style. Los Angeles label, Manimal Vinyl will release the band’s first full-length album this Spring. Heliotropes are currently on tour with UK band Esbend and will be playing Mercury Lounge on 03.22 and The Knit on 03.23. – Andy Lambert

Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler Entrance w/Experimental Sounds at Highwire Gallery March 22

Posted on:

Enticing, one-of-a-kind varietals of performance and visuals are Highwire Gallery’s stock in trade. This evening’s show, featuring the combo of Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler and Fursaxa, is unique for several reasons. Not the least of them being that it’s an opportunity to see two of Philly’s most ubiquitous – and disparate – performers take on their own sets. Mary Lattimore, the city’s best known indie harpist, is releasing her first solo album The Withdrawing Room next month, after years of building a reputation providing filigreed, ethereal backing for such notable artists like Thurston Moore, Daughn Gibson, Kurt Vile, Meg Baird, Nightlands, and many others. She’ll be joined on stage by Jeff Zeigler, who (in addition to his recognizable stature in Arc in Round) produced her record at his studio Uniform Recording. He also has his own solo sound plus a gift for collaborating with Lattimore on some mind-bending synth-harp work. These two will be sharing the bill tonight with Fursaxa, a project born of Tara Burke’s avant-garde roots and a fondness for the Philly experimental scene – her collaborators include Helena Espvall and Bardo Pond. Highwire Gallery, 2040 Frankford Ave. 8:00pm, $6 – $8 sliding scale, All Ages (Photo from The Key) – Alyssa Greenberg

NYC band on the rise: Belle Mare announce release + play Silent Barn on 03.28

Posted on:

Brooklynites Amelia Bushell and Thomas Servidone offer a seductive siren call with their band Belle Mare. Imploring you to travel back in time with them, their debut EP “The Boat Of The Fragile Mind” is set for release on April 9th. The title track shares a sonic kinship with the hushed and otherworldly soundscapes of other artists like Lia Ices and Cowboy Junkies, a band they manage to beat in the sparseness department. While Amelia’s deep, crooning vocals range between Widowspeak’s sleepy dreampop melodies and Beth Gibbon’s intense retro stylings, her lyrics toy with mysterious themes, like in the refrain of  “we hope we might make it out alive,” delivered over deep, distant percussive booms and ominous, icy synth textures – hope ultimately wins out as the refrain evolves to “we could make it out alive”.

This is a truly talented band belonging to an expanding genre here at The Deli we call "Mellow Core" (i.e. soft and slow dream pop), see them live at Silent Barn on March 28. – Dave Cromwell

Ted Nguyent Opening for Ghost Light & Slutever at Clown Can Country Club March 22

Sleep disorders often lead to interesting, yet curious behavior; excessive and pointless Internet research, surmising impractical scenarios, and obsessing over the best possible ways in which to deal with them (see: zombies) are all things that I can attribute to having too much time before my brain and body escape to that idle state. Sometimes, you lay awake and think about super groups of musicians unrealistically joining forces in a most rock and roll pursuit. This one time, I thought about how cool it would be for Stephen Malkmus of Pavement to front a math rock band that could be, but not necessarily Tera Melos. These thoughts seemed impossible, and I disregarded them as both naïve and idealistic. That was until I heard the music of Ted Nguyent. If you have seen a show flyer in recent months, then you probably have become familiar with the name. These basement dwellers have been hitting the underground circuit hard, lending their sound to any space that could be considered a venue. Their full-length is set to drop, and is promised to be every bit the Adderall-induced punk that your brain can handle. They’ll be performing tonight at Clown Can Country Club along with bratty favorites Slutever, fresh from their recent sophomore trip to SXSW. Also making an appearance will be much-beloved emotive indie act Ghost Light. Clown Can Country Club, (Please contact one of the acts or the venue for more info.), 7:30pm, $5, All Ages – Ed Newton

Bridges and Powerlines announce new EP + play Public Assembly on 03.29

Posted on:

There’s this amazing mac and cheese place in Greenpoint that serves a variety of dishes, each named for a different Brooklyn borough. Some are spicy and burn going down, others are meaty and full of flavor. Well, stretching this analogy as far as humanly possible… electro pop group Bridges and Powerlines is a little bit like that mac and cheese. With every track of new LP "Better" named for a different BK hood, singer Andrew Wood moves through synths and dials to cover a range of dissonant, highly personal stories particular to his favorite borough.

The band has a new EP coming out later in the Spring, while below you’ll find a recent demo. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

From the NYC record submissions: The Vontons

Posted on:

Whatever kind of violence these guys are up to, faceless Brooklyn band The Vontons like to keep things simple. With only three members, they’ve managed to create a huge and crashing sound in bulldozing tracks like the QOTSA – channeling ‘Excursion into a Subway Tunnel,’ or the rumbling acoustic blues of ‘I’m Gone.’

It’s an intense little ride… the record is able to go several rounds with more than a few surprises throughout. I guess when the punches are dealt this loudly by such a small ensemble, each one has to land hard. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
