NYC Radio Musik’s cheeky Electro Pop

Posted on:

When you’re down in the dumps, nothing quite beats a good pop melody to lift the old spirit. (Well, okay, vodka too). But here, nascent alt-pop artist Radio Musik (a.k.a. Jordan Hall) delivers a new video so decadently over-the-top that it’s unclear whether he’s being genuine or tongue-in-cheek or a little of both. The song is a tight, sexy production that has the added flair of being smart to boot. Yet the lack of a truly memorable chorus seems to embody the way Hall thirsts in the video for a can of “Pop” soda that he never actually gets to drink. It’s good stuff that, with the right hook, could have been transcendent. – Brian Chidester

The Pynnacles Record Release Party at the Tonic Lounge 3.30

Posted on:

There isn’t a band in Portland as keen to the grooving psychedelia of the late ‘60s as The Pynnacles. The Pynnacles take influence from garage rock’s glory days and inject it with a modern energy as driving as any punk group, resulting in an explosive live show that can get any crowd on their feet. This explosive spirit is captured in dynamic clarity on their debut album, which is being released this Saturday night at the Tonic Lounge. From the first track the album pulls the listener in with it’s lively rhythms and contagious vocal hooks that set the stage for the electrifying sounds that follow. Guitars wail, organs pulse and drums fly as the album moves through it’s vintage styles and psychedelic tones, leaving the listener wanting more after the final note of “The Open Road” is struck. Be at the Tonic on Saturday night celebrate the release with The Pynnacles, The No Tomorrow Boys and The Verner Pantons and pick up a copy of the new album while you’re there. You don’t want to miss this one. – Benjamin Toledo

Sir Sly announce tour, play the Troubadour in May

Posted on:

Over here at the Deli’s imaginary offices, we’re big fans of eerie electro-pop trio Sir Sly. So much so that we named them as the next "Artist to Watch" back in late January. The band will be touring across North America this spring, which will end with two stops at the Troubadour and Constellation Room in late May. Better mark your calendars now, so you don’t miss it!

New Video: Trippin’ Balls – Brother JT

Posted on:

Mornin’ y’all! We wanted to kick off your day with a hilariously warped new episode of Trippin’ Balls with Brother JT (a.k.a. John Terlesky) and "pianist extraordinaire Flip McNair (a.k.a. Mr. Unloved). They are also joined by special guest Ed Schrader. By posting this video, does it mean that we condone wakin’ n’ bakin’? Maybe. And a hit of LSD might be a good idea too. That is if you have nothing else to do but watch this episode over and over again for the next eight hours. However, most of us don’t have the time or the acid (get in touch if you do :o), but luckily you’ll still catch some visuals without any psychedelics – thanks to the work of Woodshop Films. (BTW: Brother JT has a new album titled The Sveltness of Boogietude coming this spring via Thrill Jockey.) Enjoy!

Modern Folk with a Psychedelic Twist

Posted on:

Shook Twins brought their country style from Idaho to Portland and turned it into a bigger, more contemporary sound. They now have a full lineup to complete what once was an identical twin duo of a an acoustic guitar and banjo player to include a vast range of instrumentation including an upright bass, mandolin, face drums and a large golden egg that is used for percussions. The elements of bluegrass set the backdrop while they sing cleanly along to a wahhed out guitar. Shook Twins have an incredible ability to draw in an audience as each song tells a story and their laid back persona makes the show personable, danceable, and fun. After a hefty touring schedule, they have made their way back to Portland for an eclectic evening at the Wonder Ballroom this Friday night with supporting acts Bike Thief and Lost Lander. – Colin Hudson

Heavy Hawaii “Washing Machine”

Posted on:

Heavy Hawaii are a San Diego duo that are truly operating on a plane of their own – their latest single, "Washing Machine", is a disquieting, heavily reverbed pop ballad seen through the lens of a hallucinogenic nightmare. It’d be facile to put it in the same vein as Syd Barrett via The Madcap Laughs, except the instruments are deliberately buried into the mix as opposed to Barrett’s clear, repetitive guitar parts. It’s as if Matt Bahamas and Jojo Keylargo dreamt up a scene in which they buried Barrett in the sand and recorded him from underground while basking in the kaleisdoscopic tinted sky. The rhythmic pulse is one of stillness and calm, but that quavaring organ bewilders your senses and throws you into a tailspin. And once it finalizes, you feel like taking the ride again. Their new album, "Goosebumps", drops April 2nd on Art Fag Recordings.

On Message w/+HIRS+ at LAVA Space March 27

Posted on:

+HIRS+ are nothing if not a timely act to go see at LAVA Space tonight, given that the country is anxiously awaiting the outcome of the Supreme Court’s hearings on gay marriage. Their bilious cocktail of grind, thrash and occult symbols is never anything but on message, and that message is one of unrelenting, politically-charged rage. Subjecting yourself to their monster opus/compendium The First 100 Songs, aside from feeling oddly purifying in its sheer violence, reveals a clever way with samples, a drummer straight from hell, and a truly rotten (in the best way) sense of humor. If the grind onslaught exhausts you, The Joint Chiefs of Math and Forest Kingdom are there, with slightly less punishing repertoires for you to take a breather. LAVA Space, (Please contact one of the acts or the venue for more info.), 8pm, $3 – $5, All Ages. – Alyssa Greenberg

Fever at the Tonic Lounge 3.29

Posted on:

Fever is perhaps one of the brightest spots in the Bridgetown Goth and Rock Noir scene. Their website instructs listeners and fans to enjoy Fever’s music "with a black lace garter and shot of whisky," and nothing could suit this music better. The seductive fusion of dark themes and dreamy vocals end up sounding like the best kind of trouble. The Tonic Lounge will be trying to contain all this trouble March 29 when Fever will hit the stage once again, preceded by the multifarious Lydian Gray. Lydian Gray weaves the same rock noir threads into a texture entirely different from Fever, but with the same dark exploration of intelligent music. The end result is a deeply engaging and intriguingly thoughtful sound that has earned comparisons to Tom Waits and Muse. The Fur Coats will also be gracing the stage, bringing a pop sound that is soulful and crisp. This band knows how to enjoy themselves on stage and by the sounds of things, they had as much fun in the studio recording the self titled album that dropped this last January. Doors will open at 8:00pm and there is a $5 cover to see three of Portland’s bands that go together as well as good tunes, a black lace garter and a shot of whiskey. – Joy Pearson
