Tuesday Tune-Out w/Mohican at PhilaMOCA March 5
It’s a new month so that means Tuesday Tune-Out at PhilaMOCA will have a new guest curator. March will be hosted by Philly Music Showcase, and headlining this evening will be instrumental rock four-piece Mohican. The band weaves emotive, tension-and-release jams that post rock fans will surely eat up (or simply rock slowly to with rhythmic head nods). Their soundscapes conjure up a cinematic feel that should sync nicely with the group’s original footage that will be projected during their set. Mohican will also be supported by atmospheric space rockers Edison so get blazed and contemplative tonight. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $5, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Album Review: Underground Alt Rocker, Known to Collapse – Collectives
Oakland, California based alt folk rockers, Known to Collapse‘ The Collectives LP was released last week on Secret Library Recordings. In addition to Lehner’s vocals, guitars, and piano, it features bassist/vocalist David Somerall, drummer Matt Bryant and, as hinted by its title, several other talented contributing artists. As such, the eight tracks combine a range of genres that underline a penchant for experimentation. The dreamy “Stop Back” kicks off on a gentle, hopeful note as the acoustic, narrative-like “The Grey Area” diffuses a slight country-western vibe. The mood picks up with the multi-layered “Felicity City”—arguably the most experimental track—with its intense bridge that opposes its epiphanic chorus. The upbeat and catchy “Kelly’s Eyes (Kelly’s Island)” engenders optimism that contrasts the blunt, edgy rebuke that is “Hate Hater.” Yet, ironically, a lack of lyrics just might have the strongest impact through the beautifully moody, piano-backed instrumental tune, “Cander.” The concluding piece “No One Can Teach You To See” features Kevin Lehner and Alora King in a duet, where gritty guitar riffs parallel the bittersweet undertone of relationships and life lessons.
With tracks alternating between laid-back and intense, dreamy and harshly sobering, Collectives feels relatable through its honesty. If there’s the occasional cryptic lyrical content, it’s a nod to another level of experimentation and uniqueness that opens the door to personal interpretation. – Natacha Pavlov
Video: Maximum Hedrum, “Keep in Touch”
Future funk duo and most recent Artist of the Month poll winners, Maximum Hedrum, are set to release their debut album on March 19. In anticipation, they have released a video for their first single, “Keep in Touch,” a track that just happens to feature George Clinton. The video, co-directed by band member, Sam Spiegel, chronicles a true-life inspired story featuring Javier Silcook, a young man with cerebral palsy. It explores themes of intimacy and connectivity in an increasingly sterile and technology-driven world. – Jacqueline Caruso
Starred releases video + announces Record Store Day release
Sometimes it takes the weight of a good song to appreciate the gravity of a particular injustice. For Starred‘s latest release, ‘Mayday,’ you’re left screaming at your youtube window wondering why these kinds of things happen. Convicted as part of the Memphis Three, Damien Echols was charged with killing three children in a Satanic ritual nearly thirty years ago, before being pardoned in 2011 after DNA evidence proved otherwise. Directed by Aaron Brown (Focus Creeps), the video for ‘Mayday’ highlights Damien’s story with interview footage placed over a haunting tune that’ll leave you with many questions. Such as… what’s next for Starred? Check out the band’s inclusion on Pendu Sound’s record store day release this April 20th. Also listen to the single from last year "Cemetery," streaming below. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Not Blood Paint releases “Calm Down” on 03.08 at Collapsible Hole
This might be hard to believe, but if anything… Not Blood Paint’s latest 5 song mini-LP (some looong tracks in there, and some short ones too!) shows the band in an even fouler spirit than their last. This isn’t to say you need to worry about angry fist throwing in mosh pits at their upcoming album release show at the Collapsible Hole. If anything, the new record displays the group as more melodically centered, harmonically grounded rock songsters than I’ve heard from them yet. But the sentiment has turned from cynicism to heated anger in tracks like album closer ‘Taking Root,’ the admonishing ‘Don’t Wanna Talk About It,’ and even the creepy Frankie Valli harmonies of ‘Family First.’ This is a group increasingly concerned about humanity’s issues. But no matter the wretched shape of our society, it’s a comfort to hear how closely knit this band is. See them live at the Collapsible Hole on Friday, March 8, and check out their Bandcamp to stream ‘Calm Down’. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Spaceship Aloha Opening for Mouse On Mars at JB’s March 4
After wrapping up a month-long tour with Man Man this past Saturday at Union Transfer, Christopher Sean Powell, a.k.a. Pow Pow, will be taking you on an intergalactic tropical vacation tonight at Johnny Brenda’s with his solo electronic project Spaceship Aloha. Whether it’s providing the backbone to one of Philly’s most exciting and respected bands, to organizing some of the finest local musicians to perform in his groovy improvisational outfit Adventuredrum, to helping produce the album of rising acts like Grandchildren, to being part of an orchestra and providing music for experimental dance companies, Powell has been an impressive driving force in Philly’s art community. Come out, and shake whatcha mama gave ya when he opens for German IDM duo Mouse On Mars this evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $19, 21+ (Photo by Data Garden) – H.M. Kauffman
