Snowmine debuts new song/video + heads to SXSW

Posted on:

After taking their "buzz band" status to new heights in 2012 (partly also because of the cover of The Deli’s summer issue), Snowmine goes to SXSW as a "band not to miss." To remind music fans about their gorgeously ascetic dream pop, Snowmine released today a new song and video for the single "Silver Sieve" (streaming), taken from their upcoming second album. Don’t miss these guys’ live show, it’s top notch stuff – we booked them several times, and can’t get enough of them!

Album Review: Teenage Sweater – Concentration

Posted on:

Santa Rosa, CA based duo Teenage Sweater have released a fresh LP entitled Concentration, available now on Tricycle Records. Concentration is a captivating collection of new-new-wave dungeon pop that combines the aural breadth of New Order, with the brooding intensity of Zola Jesus to create an album that’s as fitting on the dance floor as it is in the privacy of your bedroom while blaring through headphones.

Singer Mario Ruiz’s gently pleading chants express wary excitement–a skeptical enthusiasm for what lies ahead. In the track “Giant Summer”, where that highly anticipated season is treated as the greatest opportunity… for wasting time. Connor Alfaro’s steady, cavernous drumming shines on “Fangs”, complimenting the haunting bass line and creating an ambiance that’s entrancing in its repetition.

Ruiz and Alfaro seem most on point in “Cold Spots” and “Young Glitter”, the album’s most urgent, energetic tracks. Concentration is flush with iconic 80s synth timbres, but made to sound contemporary, more as a homage than a replication. Three instrumental interludes (all titled in parenthesis), are interspersed throughout the record, highlighting Teenage Sweater’s synth-school credentials and emphasizing the overall transient undercurrent or the album. In short, Concentration is indie dance music for hungry hearts, and a fitting title as they’ve clearly put some thought into its crafting. Stream the album in its entirety here, and don’t miss them at New Parish in Oakland on March 27th. -Andy Lambert

Catnaps Hop Off at Glitoria March 8

Posted on:

Twee quintet Catnaps make an appearance at the Glitoria this evening. The group known for their cutesy, catchy self-revealing indie-pop concoctions appears to be evolving, meshing youthful naïveté with an edgy aggression that channels adolescent angst. It’s as if that sweet sound hopped off the clean curb and fell into the dirty street. While the music still retains the witty, charming vocals, the instrumental accompaniment is rougher and jaded around the edges employing a fuzzy grunge/garage aesthetic on their latest EP Shuteye. The Best Dancers Play Dantes 3.9

Posted on:

The veteran brotherly DJ combination known as The Best Dancers will be opening for Juno What!? at Dante’s this Saturday. Franny and Bobby Govea make up the electronic duo and have made a name for themselves providing breakbeats and down-tempo grooves. Their productions have a traditional electro feel but tie in more with contemporary giants such as Pretty Lights. The siblings bring over 20 years of experience to the table that is showcased through smooth transitions, perfect overlaying, and innovation. Many of the tracks mix in classic rock n roll (i.e. “Double Vision” by Foreigner) that gets chopped up and spun with big beats and funky effects. All these factors put together create the perfect formula to get a dance party started on the right two feet. – Colin Hudson
