New Music, Emerging from your Local Scene
Here’s two ladies that know how to be emotional. Not only does duo Frances Rose rock a denim jacket for a post-grunge feel, but they also douse their mixes in an electro-dub haze of beats and loops, giving a psuedo-goth feel to their stories of heartbreak and trying romantic adventures. Track ‘Vampire’ is especially revealing, as only two women that have known each other all their lives are capable of. Frances Rose won our Reader’s Best of 2012 poll for emerging bands. – Mike Levine(@Goldnuggets)
Skaters excitedly pronounces their name repeatedly on landing on their nondescript website. But once you’ve seen the pizza-loving video for ‘Schemers,’ you’ll get a better idea for the sense of humor the trio is capable of. Shooting toy guns through confetti-soaked backgrounds, it’s obvious this is a band looking for a party. And with this much energy, there can’t be one far behind. The band was selected as The Deli writers’ best band of 2012, and recently signed a deal with a major label – they are definitely going to be one of the emerging acts not to miss at SXSW 2013. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
Haven’t hopped on The Secret History bandwagon yet? Then you better start listening before their upcoming album release. Comprised of cult songwriter Michael Grace Jr. as well as other members of My Favorite, as well as vocalists Jaime Allison Babic and Lisa Ronson (daughter of glam rocker Mick Ronson) The Secret History has made a graceful transition from My Favorite’s psych pop antics to their current sound, while maintaining a trademark whimsical playfulness. Their debut album “The World That Never Was” in 2010 gained them praise from Allmusic.com, Spectrum Culture, and was even listed as one of Kip Berman’s (of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) favorite records of the year. We’re pretty excited to see what they’ve got coming out this June. Mark your calendars, the release party will be on 06.05 at Glasslands. – Lucy Sherman
MTV Hive has endorsed the new single from Oakland’s Tremor Low, “Give Blood”. The track exhibits the familiar brand of neo-goth dance punk rock that fans will recognize from the group’s previous release, Kingmaker. The Kingmaker EP, recorded with Jamie Hill (Nada Surf, Cut Copy, Rogue Wave), landed them on Live 105‘s “5 Bay Area Bands You Need to Know” list in 2012.
“Give Blood” centers around frontman Don Bellenger’s tale of foreboding woods and their resident monsters, accented with a light touch of gore and is executed with a stylistic nod to Robert Smith. The MTV Hive premier precedes Tremor Low’s South By Southwest 2013 debut, offering the band a valuable piece of national exposure. Check them out on any of four consecutive nights at the Free Now! Showcase in Austin, Texas. -Andy Lambert

Ambitious and profound, the documentary Reincarnated takes viewers on a journey to Jamaica as we follow Snoop Lion’s transformation from gangsterific rapper to peace-loving Rastafarian. The film reveals a candid Snoop who matured amidst a turbulent past, and professes to having been drawn to Jamaican culture for years, but felt unable to explore that path due to his past time constraints and his then-limited spiritual understanding of the Rastafarian culture.
In the heart of Rastafarian culture, Trench Town, Snoop explores its history, and was personally set on learning from reggae icon and Bob Marley bandmate, Bunny Wailer to create his own re-defining album that underlines his newfound identity. While Snoop states himself, that his life has consisted of many stages, the emotion and sincerity of the film makes it hard to think of his journey as another fullt completed ‘stage’ for him—particularly in the light of him having lost so many close friends. He was open and honest about his continued growth as an artist and as a man. He contemplated the meaning of his losses throughout his years in the rap industry.
“We don’t love them while they’re here and I wanna be loved, and the only way to get love is to give love,” Snoop confesses. Hard to disagree with such a philosophy. -Natacha Pavlov
*Reincarnated will premiere in San Francisco at the Opera Plaza Cinema on March 15, 2013.
This evening, Philly Music Showcase continues their curating duties for Tuesday Tune-Out at PhilaMOCA. Set to make plenty of noise at the event will be muscular sounding South Philly punk outfit Point Breeze. They’ll be joined by all-female indie-pop trio Amanda X, featuring Cat Park from Bandname. There will also be a screening of 1994 indie cult road film Half-Cocked after the performances. Now, you’ve got a place to hideout from the rainy day blues. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $5, All Ages – Alexis V.
DRGN King premiered a new music video for the track "Wild Night" yesterday via Paper Magazine, which featured (obviously) a wild night roaming around beneath the Christmas lights in South Philly, devouring of turkey legs chased with Natty Bo and PBR, a milky green-ish concoction, and some of the local music community having a damn good time. It was directed by Dan King. If you happen to be down in Austin, you can catch DRGN King performing at our Deli showcase sponsored by Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie on Friday, March 15 at the West 6th Street Block Party.
Former Depreciation Guild and Pains of Being Pure at Heart guitarist Christoph Hochheim has created a new solo project called Ablebody, and will be premiering his new songs live at SXSW. Appearing to have put aside his primary instrument in favor of synths, samplers and a laptop, the most surprising aspect of All My Everybody is how the vocals are much stronger than anyone could have anticipated (since he never sang in either of those bands). The recently released 5 song EP’s cover image is a seated body with no head, placing clear emphasis on the band name’s meaning. That of an able body, ready for instructions.
Chimes on the dominant beat accentuate the multilayered atmospherics of first single “Sally Hot Jazz.” With vocals that evoke Tears For Fears at their peak, (“Sowing The Seeds Of Love”) the chord progression does in fact touch the edges of actual jazz. Wonderfully streamlined at under three minutes in length, impeccably crisp synth textures share sonic space with a marching, natural sounding percussion (capably supplied by former Depreciation Guild band member and twin brother Anton) while otherworldly sine waves build to a sunburst conclusion.
“No Room For I” expands on this sonic palette as its near five minutes in length would allow. Brief moments of sparser instrumentation encourages focus on the emotion being conveyed. Curiously, this wonderfully strange and mysterious song’s title does not seem to be mentioned even once. However, hook sequences with the repeated lyrics “one more night” and “I can see your eyes” create the sense of wonder as to why it wasn’t called either of those. Vocal placement is artfully crafted here as deeper harmony cascades under the higher register lead.
The cleverly titled “Phantasy” pops along a synth bass and danceable beat with those wonderful chiming bell sound samples at the forefront. Using perhaps The Pet Shop Boys as a reference point this time, the bridges are still more sophisticated structurally, with minor chord passages lifting the track above mindless dancefloor fare. “Quick & Painless” slows everything down significantly; with its near dirge-like pacing, the chirping synth textures evoke “The Man Who Fell To Earth” era David Bowie. The overall feeling is as reverential as seeing sunlight streaming through a cathedral’s stained glass window.
Closing track “Sister Marie” is a Harry Nilsson composition that surprises, not only as a cover choice, but also in its execution. Presenting this one as something you might hear on a post-Pink Floyd Syd Barrett solo album, it is perhaps a fitting conclusion to a most creative debut. – Dave Cromwell
There’s an irresistable alternative sound bite coming out of the Boston band Gentlemen Hall – it’s called "Sail Into the Sun", and it’s the first single off their upcoming full-length. They’ve been named "Best Act" by the Boston Phoenix in 2012, and they’ve shared the stage with a number of big names. Their synth-pop sound likens them to other popular electro artists coming out of the area right now – but these guys have a unique add-on to their stage presence and sound. Their 6-piece band includes a flute/piccolo player. So, lovers of wind instruments and catchy synth-pop – you’ve met your match. – Hillary Anderson
