Live Show Review – Save Adobe Books Benefit 3/11

Posted on:

Monday night’s intimate benefit show for Adobe Books left everyone who attended much better for the wear. A combined sense of revelry and urgency permeated San Francisco’s Public Works and congealed into a series of inspired performances. Cozy acoustic contributions from both Van and Adam Stephens interposed the kinetic atmospherics supplied by The Tambo Rays and The Dodos. Each act was punctuated by an alluring panorama of wall projection eye candy, and between sets DJ Andy Cabic spun the greatest tracks you’ve never heard from a collection too easy to envy.

Adobe enthusiast Tiffany Sainz grew inspired to organize the event at seeing the names of past performers scrawled on the shop’s walls. Many San Francisco artists harbor formative memories attached to Adobe, including stalwart indie duo The Dodos. Guitarist/Vocalist Meric Long once lived across the street from the iconic bookseller, where he fondly recalls gigging early in his career. Drummer Logan Kroeber once heard the worst bassline of all time at Adobe, a memory he narrated with high regard and which speaks to the shop’s reputation as a source for the genuine. The Dodos returned from a European tour just days before the event, and despite the jet lag put on a staggering performance filled with new material. They’ve finished recording a new LP, which I’m told we can expect this August.

The Save Adobe Books Indiegogo campaign concludes Friday, March 15th. If you were unable to attend the benefit show, it’s not too late to contribute! -Andy Lambert

Gina Mobilio’s “Razor Behavior”

Posted on:

I first came across Gina Mobilio‘s music at her debut album release at The Side Walk cafe a couple of weeks ago during the Anti folk festival. The song "Razor Behavior," which is also the title of the album, is what first captivated me – a morose song about the consequences of self-destruction and personal liberation, enough to make Sylvia Plath smile from her grave. The New Jersey artist grew up listening to oldies stations, and was obsessed with doo wop – and it shows. The rest of the album isn’t as hard-hitting and melancholic as Razor Behavior, but it’s real, and at times funny, and honest; her showtune-esque feel is unique in an era of mass-indie rock and EDM-inspired mainstream music, and her sound is reminiscent of a Broadway performer gone completely rogue. Gina’s stage presence is equally as captivating, engaging the audience with quirky and somewhat off putting lyrics, accompanied by a piano, and at one point a saxophone (her album features the likes of Ben Pagano, Charles Mansfield, and Julian Samal). In an interview with the artist, we found out that the album is influenced from a tumultuous musician relationship gone wrong, a somewhat quasi response letter in Taylor Swift fashion. -Kristyn Potter

Young Summer Releases Debut Single

Posted on:

DC’s Bobbie Allen met Nashville’s Trent Dabbs at a gig in DC in 2011. Her beautiful voice and his songwriting skills came together in Young Summer, and the forthcoming synth-pop EP Ready or Not. The lead single "Fever Dream" (currently available on iTunes), full of seductive vocals and bubbling synths, promises an experience familiar to adventurous ‘80s pop fans, without being purely retro. Along with Baltimore’s Lovers and Reflections, Young Summer foretells a new movement in the Mid-Atlantic, yearning for impressive female vocals over prog-pop synths. –Natan Press

The Vandies Celebrate the Release of Their First EP at Tonic Loune 3.15

Posted on:

Fans of Portland based rock band, The Vandies, know you can depend on the band to provide melodically rocking guitar riffs and repeat punches of danceable vocals that lead singer Klara Ecklend loves to serve up to her faithful fans. The energy at shows is undeniable as the 5 person band seems to feed off one another’s enthusiasm for the music. That enthusiasm creates a live show that draws you in and just keeps making you feel good. This Friday night the Tonic Lounge, known for cozy lounge seating and a solid happy hour menu will host The Vandies as they celebrate the release of their first EP. The release will take this band to the next step in the creative process and hopefully show that they know how to make an album feel as good as a live show, and not just any live show, a Vandies live show. – Joy Pearson

Omar Still Alive at The Fire March 13

Posted on:

After supposedly calling it quits in April 2011, Omar began to look alive again via Twitter, which led us to assume that a return was on its way. The pop-punk duo performed at the Cracker Factory last month as a full band/four-piece for the only time ever. Well, tonight Candice and Nick should be up to their old ways at The Fire as part of the bill for Great Red Spots’ record release show with The Love Club and Space Drugs. Omar will also be armed with a new song and merchandise so swing by and join in the celebration. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $5, 21+ (Photo by Ashley Catharine Smith) – Alexis V.

Pharaohs heat up the dancefloor with “Miraculous Feet”

Posted on:

The glory days of house music were heavily marked with a physicality that could be both seductive and goofy. This has translated in revival house acts like Pharaohs, whose exuberant track "Miraculous Feet" takes you right to the dance floor with a wobbly synth line that insists on going and going until your feet can’t take it anymore. And then there’s that sinuous bass lines that’s juxtaposed with Maria Minerva’s cut-and-dried vocals, explicitly implying the rise of a sexual urge that’s triggered by a stranger’s irresistible moves. The group’s debut full length, Replicant Moods, comes out on April 20th via LA label 100% Silk.

Engine “Lands of Sleep” Video

Posted on:

Shreveport, LA five-piece Engine truly know their way around a shimmering pop hook. The fuzzy, amplified drone and moaning guitars that open "Lands of Sleep" vaguely recall the Flaming Lips in their mid-nineties period. It is fueled with a subtle swagger that is just begging for release. And then it does in a big, big way – the song’s finale breaks into an athemic refrain that emphasizes its spindly guitar lines and histrionic harmonies. The video comes off the album of the same name, which was self-released through bandcamp late last year.

From Our Open Blog: Odd Folk Released New Single “Spit Blood”

Posted on:

Chicago band Odd Folk recently released their newest single, Spit Blood, off their upcoming EP. This single introduces psychedelic ideas and shows the new direction of the group. Their new EP brings more of the "Odd" in Odd Folk. Mostly recorded straight onto cassette, the EP incorporates the older aesthetic while still keeping some of the new digital sound mixed in.

Odd Folk received great response from their last EP, Die Young, gaining some great opportunities to play throughout the Midwest with artists such as Frontier Ruckus, Laura Stevenson and the Cans and The Last Bison.
