Band on the Rise: Summer Hours

Posted on:

Summer Hours’ first record couldn’t have been better received. From Deli Mag’s own glowing review to Alter the Press’s ecstatic write-up, the band’s come a long way with their breezy sound in a short time, especially considering their drummer Griffin Richardson has roots in noise rock. Latest single ‘Close and Closer’ keeps the waves crashing against the shore, as singer Rachel Dannefer keeps the energy going while still managing to sound entirely laid-back. Brooklyn Electro-Soul: Fanesha Fabra

Posted on:

You know.. I don’t think I listen to soul enough, so I guess I forget sometimes how involved a lot of this music can get. For chanteuse Fanesha Fabra at least, these are some dense and swirling pads and beats, fronted by her breathy and powerful soprano, her worlds are every bit as dense and powerful as anything coming from NY these days. Along with producer Chikara Aoshima, electro-soul jams like ‘Take Your Time’ and ‘Transform,’ the Brooklyn artist cools things down while boiling over with soul. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

The Dolphin Tavern Returns!

Posted on:

Our buddy Jersey Dan shared with us a pic of maintainence being done on The Dolphin Tavern (1539 S. Broad St.) sign a couple of weeks back. Well, according to Philly.com, the once seedy, dive bar will be re-opening next week on Wednesday, March 20 at 5:30pm (happy hour anyone?) – thanks to Dave P (Making Time), Sean Agnew (R5 Productions), Psydde Delicious (Delicious Boutique), Avrim Hornik and Mark Fichera (Four Corners Management). No real word yet on what to expect (except "some things have changed but most are just how you left them"), but we’re pretty sure that the dominant Philly nightlife crew know how to party and draw a crowd. This time, it’s in South Philly yo!

Well, he’s currently working on a new album that features drum work from local wunderkind Eric Slick (Dr. Dog, Norwegian Arms, etc.), who also backs him in this latest session along with Travis Hobbie (guitar/vocals) and Alex Luquet (bass).

NYC Americana: Ten Ton Man

Posted on:

Ten Ton Man has been in and out of love, bars, trains, and after such an eclectic journey… the itinerant bluesman has finally released his debut record, ‘Fall Down.’ But for all the stylistic highways Paul Livornese’s scruffy baritone travels throughout Americana, his songs are most effective when used to bring down the hammer, like the judge/jury/executioner style of ‘Dearly,’ a track where he vows justice for those betrayed. Thankfully for the rest of us, he has plenty of songs about redemption here too. See him when he plays ZirZamin on Wed, Mar 27th. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Jesse Sparhawk and Eric Carbonara & Bad Braids at Studio 34 March 14

Posted on:

When strings play off each other and combine in an extremely natural complex fashion, they pull you into a peaceful/spiritual vortex. During those brief moments of stirring, spiraling musical exploration as you temporarily shed the weight of daily responsibilities and concerns, giving way to a beauty that eases the tension consuming your undivided attention. When the duo Jesse Sparhawk and Eric Carbonara masterfully combine forces the results are on that level, as their playing seems to gracefully weave around each other cultivating musical landscapes into works of art. Tonight Folkadelphia presents another fine evening at Studio 34, where this pair of accomplished musicians plans to unveil their latest piece. The evening also includes Bad Braids, the moniker Megan Biscieglia, whose talk on folk scratches beyond the traditional surface highlighting her captivating, soul-searching vocals amid an array of instrumentation. Bad Braids sophomore album the follow-up to 2010’s Arrow and Orb, is scheduled for release via Hot Magie this spring. Studio 34, 4522 Baltimore Ave., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Outernational release “Here Is The Rose” EP

Posted on:

Last week New York-based Outernational released their four track EP “’Here Is The Rose” in honor of International Women’s Day. Produced by Tom Morello it features a litany of special guests, including Lindi Ortega, Chad Smith, Bridget Barkan, Gil Sharone, Joe Tomino, Trevor Welch and Sonny Singh. Known for their politically charged message and fiery rock sound, Outernational takes a more celebratory approach for this special occasion. Upbeat dancy number “Here Is the Rose” kicks off the record and is followed by “We Own the Night” which swings with infectious guitar/trumpet riff interplay. “She Craves Spring” slinks along with seductive beats and romantic flair in the form of crisp guitar solos Closing out the record, “Ladies of the Number” showcases the band’s masterful multi-part harmonies and acoustic roots. The EP is available for FREE download here. The band is in the midst of a March residency at Arlene’s Grocery, and will be performing March 13, 20, and 27, then at Bowery Electric on May 10. – Meijin Bruttomesso

Bath Party Play Mt. Tabor Theater 3.15

Posted on:

Recently, I was among a crowd drinking Hawaiian beer in the Hollywood district. Pin-up vixens were running around in vintage swimwear, and a surfy soundtrack was provided by a band covering Link Wray. This was my introduction to Bath Party. The band started with two guys that followed a zephyr from the woods of North Carolina; Mike hits the guitar with fun little wows as well as dark, melodic strumming, and sings his heart out about unrequited attractions as Justin pounds out unconstrained drumming. As a trio with pretty bassist Megs Domino, they play music that is steamy and hazed in psychedelic amplitude, with a top of bubbly surf pop.  It is something beautifully warbled, like noise you would hear submerged underwater. Catch Bath Party along with a generous lineup of local bands for the 2nd installment of The Deli Portland Presents at Mt. Tabor Theatre, and if you are lucky enough to have a car with a tape deck, make sure to grab their latest cassette available at the show, The Recordroom or at calirecordspdx.com. – Brandy Crowe
