Toy Soldiers are releasing a documentary titled The Maybe Trails, which was filmed and edited by Seth Klinger. They’ll be premiering it on Friday, April 19 at Johnny Brenda’s. It features footage from their month-long tour last March from the tip of nothern Vermont to Austin, TX for SXSW and back (kind of – some of you may remember that their van brokedown along the way). It will also contain snippets of their forthcoming sophmore full-length album The Maybe Boys, which was produced by Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man, etc.). You can view the trailer for the doc below.
Chappo and Jupiter One’s extra-marital affair: Fancy Colors
A big chunk of the world became familiar with Chappo in 2010 when the Brooklyn band licensed their song "Come" (featured in their debut EP) to Apple for an iPod Touch commercial. In the following years the group released another EP and a full length in 2012, while Chappo’s drummer/producer Zac, together with NYC based Jupiter One drummer Dave Heilman, also started working on material for psychedelic side project Fancy Colors. Jupiter’s singer K in the meantime had also started a new solo project called Kishi Bashi, who – together with Chappo – toured with Of Montreal among others.
After 2 years the Fancy Colors "Near Equator" album is finally done and available for streaming. Sounding like a mellow, psychedelic journey for fans of (a less baroque version of) Pink Floyd, it is said to evoke an experience Zac had one night, when he believes his "psyche had melted with the critters" who were sleeping under his room’s floor, which led to hin sharing some of their dreams, which – listening to the record – must have been rather beautiful.
Chappo is now back together working on a new release and recently put out an EP of cover songs called "Nothin’ to Sell You". See Chappo at The Knit on March 30.

New Video: “Cannonball” (Sofar Philly) – Hezekiah Jones
Below is a live performance video featuring one of our favorite folk artists Hezekiah Jones performing "Cannonball" off his 2011 LP Have You Seen Our New Fort? (Yer Bird). The footage was captured by the kind folks at Sofar Sounds Philly on Novemeber 17, 2012. If you’d like to attend or host one of Sofar’s intimate, secret showcases, feel free to get in touch with their local branch at phillysofar@gmail.com. (Photo by Lisa Schaffer)
Adia & The 7 Eyes
Recent winners of Reggie’s Battle of the Bands, Adia & The 7 Eyes have only been playing live for three months. The band spent most 2012 composing and practicing a new set of songs, and the results have been very well received. Adia has a Master of Music degree is violin performance from DePaul, and has transformed that into the somewhat rare rock violinist title. The band’s overall sound is a combination of rock, soul, and funk.
You can catch Adia & The 7 Eyes at Martyrs’ on March 20th.
Wally Dogger @ Beat Kitchen
The local trio Wally Dogger is the pinnacle of garage rock and they have a new ep called Chose Your Own Adventure. Wally Dodger formed way back in 2005, and have cornered the market on playful power pop with an occasionally vulgar edge.
You can catch Wally Dogger at Beat Kitchen on March 21st with Quiet Company and The Webstirs.
NYC folk-pop group Freak Owls releases “Orca City”
For Freak Owls, the city is a magical place filled with color and light… and nagging doubts hiding in the shadows at the end of long nights out with friends. As far as the band’s concerned, this is exactly where you should be, and what you should be doing right now. At least, that’s what singer/songwriter Josh Riccio thinks in the uneasy optimism expressed in his intimate songs. A new generation’s Iron & Wine, Riccio has curated his record’s look, feel and release himself (‘Orca City is out on his own label, Sing Engine Records), and I have no doubt this is just a start for even bigger and more optimistic things to come. Listen to EP opener ‘Push You’ below, check out the very pretty video of an old song here. – Mike Levine

Psychic Ills tours everywhere in support of “I Get By”
One of NYC’s original psych-rock groups, Psychic Ills have been keeping Brooklyn weird since 2003. From their debut LP ‘Dins’ back in 2006, the band was always a cut above their peers. While other bands tend to throw everything they’ve got into a cosmic cauldron, Elizabeth Hart and Brian Tamborello seem to weave hypnotic grooves out of thin air. Using a soft touch on ‘FBI’ and getting down-and-dirty on ‘I Get By’ for latest record ‘Hazed Dream’ (Sacred Bones), their new sound has an ultra-economy of space that leaves plenty of room for hazy questions… and that’s what I love about them. The band won’t be back in NY until later this year, so keep them on your telekinetic radar until then. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Warm Soda Releases New Album on March 26th + US Tour Dates
Oakland’s Warm Soda flaunts a gift for punchy power pop hooks reminiscent of classic punk bands like The Buzzocks and The Soft Boys. Their first full-length album, Someone For You, drops next week on Castle Face Records (Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall). The album was recorded at the band’s own studio, Fuzz City Studio, and offers twelve raucous tracks that are bursting with retro gusto. Singer Matthew Melton’s vocals maintain a peculiar and attractive delicacy against the backdrop of vintage rock ‘n’ roll overdrive. Warm Soda is currently busy touring the U.S., and will return to the Bay Area in late April. Stream Someone For You in its entirety here. -Andy Lambert

Mwahaha Re-releases Self Titled Album With Two New Added Tracks On March 26th
Oakland based electronic, psychedelic pop band, Mwahaha is making waves with their distinct brand of ethereal electro psychedelia. A burst of recent exposure, including love from NPR and a spot on the Warp Records SXSW showcase, has made these sonic savants difficult to ignore. LA-based indie label Plug Research has singed the band, and will re-release their self-titled debut album later this month.
The record is a swirling vortex of fluid textures and glitch honey. Think Elephant Six Collective meets TV On the Radio. Track highlights include Swimmer, Deep Sleep and Love–the latter featuring tUnE-yArDs‘ Merril Garbus.
The band recorded “Mwahaha” with Oakland-based engineer Eli Crews (Deerhoof, Rogue Wave) last year and put the album out themselves in limited quantity. The new Plug Research edition features two additional tracks and new artwork, and will be available on vinyl. -Andy Lambert
