Seasick Mama releases video for “Quit Your Job” + releases EP “Dead Like Money”

Posted on:

Marial Maher (aka Seasick Mama) wants you to abandon your tedious nine to five. You know you’ve been thinking about it for a long time, and the parading progression of gorgeous (possibly unemployed) women doing dangerous and fun things in various non-office settings should probably seal the deal.

Taken from the brand new debut EP "Dead Like Money," in the video for "Quit Your Job" the trio picks up from where Florence and the Machine’s powerful torrents left off, and beats the hell out of complacency in a churning vision that gets you to know these ladies a lot more intimately (oh, there are some boys too in the mix by the way, we just noticed). From smoke-filled backrooms to Bourbon Street, Seasick Mama crashes parties across America. I guess that’s what you get to do when you quit your job. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

The Deli Philly’s Best of 2012 Poll Top Performers: Cheers Elephant

Posted on:

This past year has proven to be a very busy one for psych-pop act Cheers Elephant. The band has been incessantly performing shows since the release of their latest full-length album Like Wind Blows Fire this past April. In addition to headlining a number of local spots, 2012 also saw the band sharing the stage with some national acts as well, which included Mayer Hawthorne, Brooklyn-based Rubblebucket, San Francisco Area’s the Mother Hips, and backing the legendary Chubby Checker, just to name a few. Next month, the band will embark on a headlining tour across the U.S., which will include a stop at SXSW. With the quartet’s live performances gaining more notoriety, Cheers Elephant is feeding off the buzz and carrying the momentum. (BTW: Check out the rest of our Best of 2012 Poll list HERE.) – Ed Newton

Glow Marrow to release EP in March

Posted on:

It is a known fact that LA is blessed with summer weather almost year round. So how can a band not be inspired by sunny days and the beaches at their fingertips? Glow Marrow is a band that exudes a crisp sea breeze and the sublime character of California. High school friends Derek Coburn and Darin Green make up the duo which is originally from Thousand Oaks. At its core, Glow Marrow is an indie pop band with exhilarated vocals and pleasant melodies. However, what makes their songs memorable is their knack for diving into synth beats and tropical influences. The band channels the likes of El Guincho and Vampire Weekend’s cape cod signature, but add their own Southern California touch. Glow Marrow will be releasing a debut EP called "Braver Days" on March 5th. – Karla Hernández

Caveman releases sophomore album in April + tours and plays SXSW

Posted on:

Blogosphere sweethearts Caveman have seen quite the buzz since the 2011 release of debut Coco Beware – the band was featured on the cover of our Summer 2011 NYC issue. After that, the indie psych popsters toured with The War on Drugs, won The Deli’s 2011 “Best of Emerging Artists” poll, and in 2012, Fat Possum re-released the celebrated album. 2013 means big things as well; Caveman is preparing to release self-titled album on 4/2. The quintet will kick off a headlining tour including dates at SXSW and Webster Hall later this month. Don’t miss the gorgeous, expansive harmonies and synth-induced heights of first single “In the City.” – Corinne Bagish

Ticket Giveaway: DC Funk Punk Throwback Jam @ 930 Club 2/24

Posted on:

Not long after the announcement came out that the documentary The Legend of Cool "Disco" Dan from hometown filmmakers Joseph Pattisall & Roger Gastman was premiering at the AFI, tickets sold out crazy fast. Thanks to this piece of history being brought to the big screen, an awakening of DC’s influential past has brought upon a weekend of some of DC’s best from the 80’s and beyond. Including an already sold out opening to the Corcoran Gallery’s exhibit "PUMP ME UP: The DC Subculture of the 1980s" (running til April 7.)

Also in this schmorgasborg is the DC Funk Punk Throwback Jam at the 9:30 Club on Sunday 2/24 at 3:00 PM.  Hosted by Henry Rollins, the day long show will feature Trouble Funk, Scream, Shady Groove, Black Market Baby, DJ Kool, Junkyard, Youth Brigade, Static Disruptors, Worlds Collide and more.

The 930 Club wants to make sure you make it to this show, so if you haven’t bought your tickets here yet, they’ve teamed up with us to give out a pair to one lucky local!  All you have to do is email us by noon on 2/22 and let us know either your favorite song from any of the bands at this gig, or tell us the first time you ever saw a Cool "Disco" Dan tag.  Please include your first and last name for guestlist requirements, and we’ll contact the winner.

NYC bands on the rise: Junior Prom plays Mercury tonight (02.19)

Posted on:

When I listen to Junior Prom’s ecstatic dance pop, I can’t help but think of some of DFA’s legion of floor-stomping, synth-backed artists last decade. Channeling sounds familiar to fans of !!! and Juan MacLean, fans will recognize the stomp behind tracks like ‘Sheila Put The Knife Down.’ This is violent imagery suitable for killing idols of all sorts. And you’ll have the perfect opportunity to do so when the Brooklyn duo plays Mercury Lounge tonight (02.19). – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
