Body Language releases free EP + plays SXSW

Posted on:

If – as Bill Clinton suggested during this latest election cycle – our political system is plagued by a lack of sobering math, it seems to me our prose is in even worse shape. During a recent lunch at Cafe Juliette in Williamsburg, I marked down every time that the trio at the table next to me said the word “like” during a five- minute span. Can’t say the results weren’t depressing, but perhaps serendipitously, Body Language’s new (and free) electro-soul EP, "Grammar," takes today’s rhetorical dilemma and makes it fodder for the cannon. What with mopey titles like “The Chasing,” “What’s the Point?” and “I’m a Mess,” Body Language prescribe the most obvious (yet ardent) of all pop music elixirs: Fun. In other words, if your romantic life sucks, bring your problems to the party and, like, leave ‘em on the dancefloor. But for chrissakes, get out of the house. Mathematically, nothing can happen until you do. Body Language is finishing their debut LP and will be doing a co-headline tour with Vacationer down to SXSW (both bands played The Deli’s UN/OFF party at last year’s Austin fest). – Brian Chidester

El Sportivo & the Blooz release “Nights and Weekends”

Posted on:

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a producer encounters a drunken oaf and his hooligans aboard an LA train, and then winds up commiserating with said band while making music together in a sleeper car until that fateful hangover morning, in which he finds himself robbed off his guitar but with a golden possession in his hands: the bands’ "reel to tape". That’s all in the past now, as Lewis Pesacov, better known for his contributions in Foreign Born and Fool’s Gold, has ever since molded the wisful country rock of El Sportivo (aka Daron Holloway) into an enticing proposition. Their debut LP with backing band the Blooz, Nights & Weekends, lingers with the passing of a gentle breeze through a wide-open desert, each lap steel riff and rambling bass motif marked with seamless precision. The music reflects its expansive scope as they drive off an open road with an anything goes predicament as if they were pursued with a looming sense of danger, accentuated with a prominent wall of guitars and slinky piano hooks that only enhance the sprawling nothingness in view. We never quite know the destination they lead, but we know that the journey is only a first out of the many that lie ahead. You can stream Nights and Weekends in its entirety by visiting their soundcloud page.

Parlour and Juke’s Live Cuts with Jacob Jones

Posted on:

Our newest writer/intern, Jonathan Parrish, stopped by Parlour and Juke’s shop show on Saturday and brought his rundown on the event to The Deli – Nashville. Read on to find out what happened, and give Jonathan a hi-five the next time you see him out! – The Deli Staff

—–

Every few months, the ultra-stylish hair salon Parlour and Juke throws a house party called "Live Cuts." Holding true to their namesake, the parties feature live music which elevates the Americana-chic Parlour into a juke joint. The most recent event on February 23rd boasted inclusive Yazoo brews and the tunes of Jacob Jones. While the beers ran out before everyone attending could redeem their allotted two, and the room felt like a sauna, the overall vibe was good. Jones played songs from his recently released Good Timin’ in Waynetown as well as some old standards. For those of you unfamiliar with Jones, he sticks closely to boogie-blues, opting to keep things classic instead of injecting any modern twists. The sounds were like being at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance while Marty McFly plays "Johnny B. Goode," and the room felt like a fun backyard BBQ sponsored by Levi’s.

You can catch Jacob Jones live at the Third Shift Amber Lager presents: Nashville – the Official SXSW Send-Off show on March 2nd. –Jonathan Parrish

Video: Hunter Hunted, “End of the World”

Posted on:

The electro-pop duo made up of Dan Chang and Michael Garner, known as Hunter Hunted, is sure to be a household name in no time. They made their official debut earlier this month to a sold out crowd at the Troubadour, and are already making their television debut tonight on Conan. After viewing the video for “End of the World” it’s obvious why they are soaring to the top of their class. The glistening guitars, booming drumbeats, and electronic flourishes are merely the backdrop to their folk-tinged melodies and honeyed harmonies. Add to that the anthemic chorus that drops in like a stampede of horses in the desert as they croon, harmonically of course, “the end is coming, but we already know,” and you’ve got yourself one catchy single that’s sure to spread like wildfire. Watch the two attempt to survive in an abandoned, rusted out wasteland as they are hunted by a pair of sexy face-painted women in this video that’s as sleek as their production. While they may only be playing inside your TV tonight, they’ve nabbed a coveted residency this March at the Bootleg. It’s free every Monday and the line-up is already shaping up nicely. – Jacqueline Caruso

Dream Rock from NYC: Heaven goes to SXSW

Posted on:

Fronted by guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Matt Sumrow (The Comas, Ambulance LTD), Brooklyn’s Heaven plays a precise and controlled kind of dream rock. Complementing Matt’s lead vocals is keyboardist and sometimes bassist Ryan Lee Dunlap (Fan-Tan). In addition to providing buzzy synth textures, Ryan backing vocals and harmonies contribute to this band’s signature sound. Their song "Mountains Move" is moody, dark and dreamy (all rolled into one). Matt’s outstanding guitar work alternates between clean-note arpeggios and wah-wah effected choruses. Other tracks like "Once The Heartache," "Falling Apple" and "Centuries" add majestic keyboard pads to clearly defined chord progressions and atmospheric dream-gaze vocals. Respected drumming powerhouse Mikey Jones (The Big Sleep, Snowden) completes the trio, giving the band a tightness often lacking in this genre and a forceful edge in the live environment. The band will be playing at SXSW 2013 and is currently  finalizing the debut album, which will be released on Goodnight Records. Dave Cromwell

STRFKR Play Hometown Show and Mingle at Someday Lounge 2.27

Posted on:

Despite gaining notoriety on a national level, Starfucker (or STRFKR), is still humble in their artistic approach and work ethic. Their new album, Miracle Mile, is highly dance-able with familiar twinkles and pop, but pushes deeper bass and funky tunes that could make for one dreamy, mirror ball and light saturated roller disco party (please guys do this someday). Most of the 15 track double LP was written and recorded in an Astorian Beach house here in Oregon, and has the added guitar talents of new member Patrick Morris. Tonight marks the hometown show of their tour at the Roseland Theater; there is also the opportunity to have drinks and dance with the guys from the band at the after-party/DJ set at Someday Lounge for just $3. – Brandy Crowe
