In our insanely convoluted (but SUPERBLY accurate) system governing our Year End Poll for Emerging NYC Artist, our writers have a rather influential vote. Here are the results of this specific poll (top 3 positions only).
Quite unexpectedly, indie guitar-pop trio Skaters (pictured) took home the gold (the band is currently recording their debut LP, needless to say we are looking forward to it!), with the silver going to electro-pop masters St. Lucia and 10 bands getting a sliver of bronze.
BEST OF 2012 FOR EMERGING NYC ARTISTS – DELI WRITERS’ POLL RESULTS –
Matador Records just announced that Kurt Vile’s forthcoming album Wakin On A Pretty Daze, which was produced by John Agnello in multiple studios throughout the Northeast, will be coming out on April 9, and is a 69-minute double album. The label shared the single called “Wakin On A Pretty Day” (yes, that is the correct title and not a typo). You can listen to it below accompanied by outtakes from the Steve Powers (ESPO) documentary about the making of the cover album mural (however, it is not the official music video for the song). The track is available for free download which you can do so HERE, where you can also find more info about Vile’s upcoming tour with The Fresh & Onlys and Angel Olsen as well as vinyl, track listing, and pre-order details. If you happen to be in NYC tomorrow, you can win an invitation to attend the record listening party (with complimentary beverages like the custom-made featured cocktail “Pretty Daze”) at Electric Lady Studios by submitting HERE. Kurt Vile & the Violators will be performing next in Philly on Saturday, May 18 at Union Transfer.
We are proud to announce that The Deli Philly’s Best of 2012 Emerging Artist is Norwegian Arms! It was a tight race from the get-go between the self-described “weirdo-folk” duo turned trio and power-pop outfit Hop Along with Lushlife solidly representing the local hip-hop community in third place.
Please take a look at our chart of 60+ Philly area artists below. The highest value of votes came from our jurors, who included individuals involved in local music. This includes promoters, venue owners, press, DJs and other music experts (who are listed below – thanks y’all). The remainder of the votes was compiled by The Deli Philly contributors, readers, and open submissions voted on by national Deli editors.

I told you… deep down, tough guys are just big romantics like the rest of us. In fact, the fiercer the leather jacket, the bigger the heart. Friends of band Skaters, Drowners pick up similar riffs from that group’s messy rock stature and turn them into a glorious montage to rock n’ roll the way we New Yorkers want it. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
On Thursday, February 7, LA – turned Brooklyn – based American Royalty rolled out the red carpet at Mercury Lounge for their newest “Prismatic EP.” Melding grungy rock riffs with heavy electronica vibes, melodic synthesizers, and shining two-part vocal interplay over heart-pounding dance beats, the three piece packed out the venue and fed off the crowd’s non-stop energy. Drawing from their previous two EPs, the trio included notable “oldies but goodies,” “Blood Keys" and “Lately.” Celebrating their new release, the band showcased distorted vocal lines and pulsations of a mini-megaphone on “Honey & Queen” (streaming) sultry electro-breakdowns tinged with bluesy nuances on the highlight song, “Hungry”, whistling beat-box overtones on “EVO,” and smooth shuffling, hip-hop vibes, and bluesy close on “Change the Colors of the Sky.” American Royalty’s quality rock songs and the energy of their live shows will certainly help this band grow their fan base in the city. – Meijin Bruttomesso

The term “bandleader,” with its sheen of the olden days, is used way too seldom, even with the jazz age wildly back in vogue (thanks a lot, Baz Luhrmann). But then again, you can’t name many who actually deserve that label. Ape School might be our city’s most deserving of that title. Michael Johnson, the man behind this colorfully-named outfit, has worked with everyone from Kurt Vile to the Lilys, and his career as a solo artist has been supported by a host of local luminaries. He’s joined at Johnny Brenda’s tonight by The Interest Group, an art-minded ensemble who give major credence to Philly’s utter disdain for convention. If you’re all dressed up with no place to go this weekend, we’ve got some suggestions for you…
Friday…
Tonight, the Exit/In is hosting a sweaty roots rock show, highlighting two local acts and one out-of-towner. The Blackfoot Gypsies kick things off with a solid dose of rock swagger and are followed up by fellow Nashvillian, Joshua Black Wilkins and his gritty brand of whiskey folk. Headliner American Aquarium is set to take the stage around 11 pm. You can find the details for this one here.
If you’d like your Friday night activities to be a little more laid-back and bank account-friendly, the free show at the Basement is your jam. Further exemplifying that Nashville is a goldmine of musical talent, TORRES will be hosting her record release show. Sharing the stage with her is the erotically-named, immensely-talented BF/GF Sex and former Floridian, surf rock band Catfish. Get all the info on this show over this way.
Saturday…
Keeping the album release theme going, Sol Cat are heading to the Stone Fox to unveil their self-titled debut. After what felt like an eternity of teases and video premieres, the band are finally unveiling their LP. Joining them for the event are The Weeks and Junior Astronomers. Getcher tickets here.
If you plan to head to the Mercy Lounge on Saturday night, act fast. The venue is sure to fill up with Kopecky Family Band, RayLand Baxter, and indie rock Texans, The Eastern Sea, taking the stage together. All three acts spent 2012 catching a decent amount of heat and hype, so get your tickets early and expect an explosive and fun show.
Sunday…
Typically a quiet day for venues, Butterfly Boucher keeps the party going for one more night over at 3rd & Lindsley. Joe Pug joins her on the bill and, according to the Facebook event, the show will air live on Lightning 100.
A not to be missed Valentine’s Day show is slated to go down at Webster Hall’s Studio in Manhattan on 2/14. Presented by Kristina Tequila, the star studded night will be headlined by scene veterans Total Slacker (pictured and streaming below). Their classic track “Crystal Necklace” set a standard for that low down, creep-along groove with appropriately reverberated boy-girl tandem vocals. Expect more of that and surely some bowl-cut fueled guitar jam-outs too. Hunters have been making waves all over the place this year, and one would expect their performance on this night to be just as punk-rock manic as recent shows of theirs have demonstrated. XRay Eyeballs spent a good portion of last year touring all through Europe. That kind of road-honed experience will surely be on display as they continue to showcase songs from their latest album “Splendor Squalor.” Opening the night will be none other than the tireless Cassie Ramone, who appears to be effortlessly juggling gigs between her bands The Babies, Vivian Girls and now these solo acoustic shows. –Dave Cromwell
Yeah, the weather is pretty darn crappy out. While it could be worse, last year’s taste of global warming has spoiled me when it comes to Philly winters. I don’t know about you, but I could sure use a vacation to some place warm right about now. Unfortunately, I’m just a struggling writer that could probably only afford taking the mass transit line to the airport, and maybe a few drinks at the terminal bar. So I guess I’ll have to leave it all behind at Nude Beach Presents’ first installment of their monthly parties at Underground Arts this Saturday night with Vacationer, Robert Delong and Cruiser. I know. That is far from the feeling of dipping your toes in the sand on a tropical beach. However, with the copious amount of herb that I’ll be smoking mixed with all the free Sailor Jerry spiced rum that the bartenders will allow me to consume before politely cutting me off, I won’t know the difference until I wake up the next morning on my couch (either fully clothed or naked). Come forget what it’s like outside with me! Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 10pm, $8, 21+ – Alexis V.
